Abstract

This study explores the intersections of divine femininity and Islamic mysticism in Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s Faust and West-östlicher Divan [West–Eastern Divan], positioning these canonical works as fertile ground for intercultural literary inquiry and postcolonial English Language Teaching (ELT). Employing hermeneutic, intertextual, and comparative literary methods, this research uncovers Goethe’s engagement with Sufi metaphysics, the Qur’an, and Persian poetic traditions—particularly his intertextual dialogue with Hafiz and the implicit spiritual kinship with Islamic thinkers such as Rabiah al-Adawiyah and Muhammad Iqbal. Central to this inquiry is Goethe’s concept of the Ewig-Weibliche [Eternal Feminine], which, when read through Islamic mystical lenses, reveals a syncretic spiritual vision that transcends Orientalist binaries and patriarchal norms. The paper argues that integrating these texts into ELT pedagogy encourages both aesthetic appreciation and critical intercultural understanding—especially within postcolonial, Muslim-majority contexts like Indonesia. By reinterpreting canonical Western literature through Islamic and gender-inclusive frameworks, this study contributes to both Goethean scholarship and transformative, decolonial approaches to literary pedagogy.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine how Sophie's identity is conveyed through signs (icon, index, and symbol) in the film The School for Good and Evil. The type of this study is qualitative research and uses descriptive research design. The data consists of visual and verbal signs. The data were collected by repeatedly watching the film, selecting key scenes, documenting relevant visuals, coding them according to Peirce's semiotic consisting of triadic model and types of signs, and validating interpretations through secondary references. The data analysis employed Peirce's semiotic framework and Erikson's psychological development concept, which integrated with stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The analysis shows that icons depict Sophie's unstable self-perception, while indexes reveal the connection between her inner conflicts and external effects that indicate her identity confusion, and symbols depict the social and cultural expectations around her. These signs collectively illustrate Sophie's struggle between her authentic self and the identity imposed by external pressures. By uncovering how the film's semiotic elements guide the interpretation of identity conflict, this study highlights the role of cinema in constructing and influencing perceptions of self-worth, beauty, and morality in media narratives.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to examines how Taylor Swift's Folklore represents the psychological and emotional dimensions of emerging adulthood. Focusing on six selected songs "The 1," "Exile," "Cardigan," "Mirrorball," "This Is Me Trying," and "August". The study analyses how metaphors, narrative imagery, and lyrical symbols construct meanings related to identity exploration, instability, emotional vulnerability, nostalgia, feeling in-between, and sense of possibilities. The research employs qualitative descriptive using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach, examining denotative and connotative meanings within six selected songs from Folklore. The interpretation is guided by Arnett's (2000) Emerging Adulthood Theory. The analysis is also supported by Miles and Huberman's interactive data analysis model, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings demonstrated that Folklore constructs emerging adulthood as a period of emotional turbulence, fragile self-concept, nostalgia, coping behaviour, and identity negotiation. Symbols such as Mirrorball, cardigan, and seasonal imagery reflect vulnerability, memory, and transition. These findings demonstrate that contemporary song lyrics function not only as artistic expression but also as cultural texts that reflect psychological development during emerging adulthood. This study contributes to literary and cultural studies by showing how popular music articulates emotional meanings connected to life transitions and identify formations.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to analyze how religion functions as a political tool to maintain and expand power in Hilary Mantel's novel Wolf Hall, focusing on narrative strategies and textual indicators that show the use of religion as a political instrument.Methodology: This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with primary data in the form of dialogue, narrative descriptions, and character interactions in Wolf Hall (2009). Data were collected through intensive reading, text marking, thematic grouping, and supporting theoretical sources. The analysis combines Foucault's theory of the power of knowledge to interpret ideological control mechanisms and Abrams' theory of narrative elements to explore how character, plot, setting, and point of view are used to depict religion as a tool of political domination. Data validation follows the Miles and Huberman model through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion verification to ensure analytical accuracy. Results: The results show that religion in Wolf Hall functions as a strategic mechanism to restructure political authority, legitimize state power, build national identity, and shape collective obedience. The novel shows how religious discourse influences the psychological and social spheres, thereby enabling the consolidation of political control.Applications/Originality/Value: This research involves literary, political, and religious discourse studies, demonstrating how historical fiction reveals religion within power structures. This research explains the importance of Foucault and Abrams' theoretical frameworks for analyzing political narratives in literary works. This research can provide a reference for further studies on religion, ideology, and representations of power in narrative texts.

Abstract

This study aims to deeply analyze the form, portrayal, and psychological motives of Peter Parker's loneliness in the films The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014). This research uses an interpretive qualitative approach with a narrative and visual content analysis design. Primary data is taken from scenes, dialog, and cinematic elements. The analysis phase was conducted systematically: (1) Classification of loneliness aspects based on Weiss/Cacioppo Theory, (2) Identification of supporting cinematic elements (e.g., mise-en-scène), and (3) Triangulation with Alfred Adler's Individual Psychology concepts (Inferiority Complex, Striving for Superiority, and Lifestyle) to determine the root causes of loneliness. It was found that Peter Parker's loneliness is multidimensional, encompassing Emotional Loneliness (Feelings of Loss and Intimate Relationship Difficulties) and Social Loneliness (Social Isolation). Visually, the isolation is reinforced thru low-key lighting and rain symbols, emphasizing its emotional weight. Causally, loneliness is a consequence of a Solitary Lifestyle formed as compensation for feelings of inferiority resulting from childhood trauma and conflict between Social Interest (hero's responsibility) and personal needs. The novelty of this study lies in the explicit integration of Adler's Individual Psychology Theory and Loneliness Theory to analyze fictional superhero characters. This research provides a deep psychological analysis model not previously available in previous studies, explaining that Peter's loneliness is a structural price of heroic responsibility, not merely interpersonal failure.

Abstract

This study analyzes the representation of racial discrimination and its social implications in Green Book (2018). The film portrays the racial experiences of African Americans in the United States during the 1960s through the journey of Dr. Don Shirley, an African American pianist, and Tony Vallelonga, his driver. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method with a film analysis approach. The data consist of dialogues, scenes, character interactions, and narrative and cinematic elements depicting racial discrimination. The analysis integrates Feagin’s theory of racial discrimination, Hall’s theory of representation, Bordwell and Thompson’s film theory, Du Bois’s (1903) concept of double consciousness, and Bonilla-Silva’s theory of systemic racism to examine the forms, representation, and social implications of racial discrimination. The findings reveal four forms of racial discrimination represented in the film: individual discrimination, institutional discrimination, cultural racism, and spatial segregation, with institutional discrimination appearing most frequently. The study also finds several social implications, including identity struggle, power imbalance, social exclusion, and limited social mobility. These findings demonstrate that Green Book represents racism as a systemic social issue embedded in institutions, cultural values, and everyday interactions.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of repetition compulsion in Sonny Hayes, the protagonist of “F1: The Movie” (2025), whose persistent return to dangerous racing despite past trauma exemplifies an unresolved psychological pattern rarely examined in film scholarship. While prior studies have addressed trauma recovery or applied alternative frameworks such as logotherapy to fictional characters, none has combined Freud's repetition compulsion with Todorov's narrative theory to analyze how this specific psychological condition is structurally embedded within a film's plot. This study addresses that gap by synthesizing Freud's psychoanalytic theory of repetition compulsion with Todorov’s narrative stages, creating a dual-framework approach to analyze how psychological pathology is structurally encoded in cinema. By mapping four clinical forms of compulsion such as unconscious drive, reenactment, connection to trauma, and attempt at mastery, onto the film's five-stage plot progression, the research demonstrates that character behavior is not merely a plot device but a systematic representation of unresolved psychic wounds. The findings identify four forms of repetition compulsion unconscious drive, reenactment of painful experiences, connection to trauma, and attempt at mastery structurally organized across Todorov's five narrative stages. This study contributes a specific analytical model for tracing psychoanalytic conditions through narrative structure, offering a concrete reference point for future studies examining repetition compulsion in other film characters.
