Abstract

This is an annotated translation research. The problems of the research are: (1) What are the difficulties encountered by the researcher when translating a motivation book entitled 7 Keajaiban Rezeki into English? (2) How are those difficulties solved in the translation? The purposes of this research are: (1) To attain factual information concerning the problems faced by the translator/researcher in translating the source text. (2) To give plausible solutions to the difficulties encountered by the translator/researcher in translating the source text. The method used in this study is introspective and retrospective methods. Relevant translation strategies and theories are used in solving the problems that are encountered during the translation. Results obtained from this research show that there are 14 words, 6 phrases, 2 clauses, 1 pronoun, 1 idiom, and 1 sentence from 25 data analyzed that pose difficulty to be translated by the researcher/translator. Based on the 25 data which have been analyzed, it is found that there are 11 translation strategies employed by the researcher to solve the problems/difficulties in translating the source text into the target text, namely: 1 literal translation, 2 loans, 1 phrase structure change, 5 paraphrases, 1 clause structure change, 1 cohesion change, 1 abstraction change, 2 transpositions, 1 unit shift, 1 naturalization and 9 cultural filtering. Keywords: annotated translations, problems, solutions

Abstract

This journal article focuses to analyze signs contained in Kartun Benny regarding to issues of coronavirus happened these days in Indonesia and many countries in the world. Kartun Benny is cartoon which is published in online portal media, Kontan.co.id. Kartun Benny is published regarding to the current issues happened in Indonesia. The aim is to find the meaning contained Kartun Benny regarding to the coronavirus issues. To analyze the cartoon, Pierce’s theory of semantic is used. From the three levels of trichotomy, only one level which is the second level is used to find the meanings. Qualitative method is used in conducting the research. After analyzing the meaning of the Kartun Benny on the 2 editions, which are 21st and 29th of March 2020, the result shows: Kartun Benny is categorized as humorous cartoon. The function of the release of this cartoon is to give sense of humor to the citizen, not to give critic or satire to the government, to picture the condition of how the people live in the situation of the spreading of coronavirus, and after knowing every policies and instruction given by the Government. In addition, Kartun Beny shows the condition and the respond of the society regarding the issues, the news, and the policies given by the government about the spreading of coronavirus.

Abstract

The aim of this article is to construct a critique of Western neo-orientalism through the film medium.  Film is a product of popular culture.  After 9/11, the concept of neo-orientalism emerged in the West, especially in America, which considers everything that is not "Western" to be terrorists, and radicals.  To criticize the concept of neo-orientalism in “Ms.  Marvel” the researchers used the theory of identity from Stuart Hall and Homi Bhabha to get the concept of identity in this series. The concept of identity found is a construction of a critique symbol of Western neo-orientalism. The source of data in this research was a television miniseries entitled “Ms. Marvel” which live on Disney+.  The results of the analysis showed that there are Islamic symbols that appear in this series which are a construction of criticism of the concept of Western neo-orientalism. It can be implied from the result that "Ms.Marvel" is one of the examples of a construction of Neo-Orientalism criticism through the medium of Popular Culture.
