Abstract

Waste management by society not only reflects individual responsibility but also plays a crucial role in environmental sustainability and community welfare. This research aimed to understand society’s perception and behavior regarding domestic waste and its surrounding waters. Understanding societal behavior is the key to sustainable environmental management. Direct inquiry was conducted to the sample population of 25 respondents who represented various age, education, and cultural groups in the densely populated residential area surrounding the Brantas River in Dinoyo Ward. Field observations were done to take water quality parameters and monitor the residents’ behavior regarding waste management. The results indicated that 76% of respondents know the impact of river pollution, although most did not contribute actively to reducing their domestic waste volume. About 44% of respondents never saw anyone littering the river, which may be due to the regular waste pick-up system. This was supported by water quality parameters that did not demonstrate any sign of pollution, although high turbidity was indicated. Comprehension of the results of this study is hoped to inspire the ideas of solid intervention plans to increase awareness and decrease the negative impact of domestic waste on the Brantas River in Dinoyo Ward. Abstract

Abstract

This research aims to explore the experience of women by Batang Masumai river to slow violence. Limited access to water services and infrastructure in rural area affect women who bear the responsibility to meet household water need because they depend on the river as water source and sanitation facilities. Climate change as a form of slow violence that occurred gradual and attritional becomes a major threat to household water security. The method of this qualitative research is interpretative phenomenological analysis. The data is collected through an in-depth interview with four women from low-income households by Batang Masumai river and observation. The result of this reseacrh shows that floods and droughts that become more severe contribute to water availability, accessabiliy, and quality so that women by Batang Masumai river have to walk longer distances to meet clean household water, carry heavy burden load while also exposed to water conflicts in water points. As slow violence becomes more destructive in a long period of time, there is a need for government to fully implement Law 17/2019 regarding Water Resources to help women with limted sources to adapt and build their resiliency. Abstract

Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem due to a lack of long-term nutritional intake, resulting in impaired growth in children. The government's commitment to reducing stunting rates can be carried out through empowerment programs. The highest level of empowerment is reflected in being able to make decisions. This study aims to analyze the factors influencing decision-making related to the community empowerment development model to prevent stunting in children in Malang Regency. The research method uses Smart/PLS analysis. Respondents are stakeholders related to stunting. The study results show that welfare directly influences decision-making regarding stunting prevention. The community at the research location needs to improve welfare to increase their empowerment in reducing stunting. Awareness of stunting problems is a potent mediator for increasing empowerment through welfare and participation. This study suggests that it is necessary to develop welfare programs and community involvement to increase community empowerment and overcome stunting. Abstract

This research investigates how regional languages, specifically the Karo language, influence the formation and preservation of Karo Batak ethnic identity in Kutalimbaru Village, Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra. Data were collected through participatory observation and in-depth interviews with informants from various generations within the Karo community. This data collection method uses a descriptive qualitative approach. The research results show that the Karo language is still used in daily life, especially within families and in traditional activities. However, due to the dominance of the Indonesian language, especially among teenagers, the Karo language is starting to change. Changes in the ethnic identity of the younger generation are indicated by the phenomenon of code-switching between Karo and Indonesian. However, the Karo language is still regarded as a marker of identity and respect for ancestors, and it remains an important symbol in traditional ceremonies and social interactions. External factors such as globalization, formal education, and migration pose significant challenges, while internal factors like the role of parents, religious institutions, and traditional leaders play a crucial role in language preservation. This research emphasizes that the preservation of the Karo language is crucial for maintaining the cultural identity of the Karo Batak amidst the ongoing social and cultural shifts.

Abstract

This research explores the impact approaching socioscientific issues on student learning succes in secondary school chemistry. The study utilizied a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) examining eight articles published beetwen 2020 and 2024 that met specific isssues in chemistry education. Steps of a Systematic Literature Review (SLR), 1) Google scholar (n=1000), 2) Searching results (n=35), 3) Reamining (n=32), 4) Screening of remaining (n=25), 5) Eligible articles (n-8). The findings show that this approach improves students understanding of key chemistry topic, especially acid-base chemistry, petroleum, and hidrocarbons. The laerning models applied in this study include Problem Based Learning (PBL) and discovery learning, both of wich effectively increase student engagement. The data showed the student in the experimental class applying the socio scientific approach achieved and average score of 65.16, compared to an average score of 50.87 in the control class. Relevan issues to discuss in the educational context include the environmental impact of chemical use, dependence on fossil fuels, and chemical waste management. Overall, this study has important implication for curriculum development and teaching metods in chemistry education, highlighting the importance of intergrating contemporary issues into the teaching and learning process.
