This study aimed to explore how to engage students to read narrative text and promote the teaching of reading by using Senggi folktales. This descriptive-qualitative study took place in Keerom, Papua, Indonesia between July and September 2015. There were students of Junior High School, 1 Junior High School teacher, 1 ex-elementary school teacher, 1 tribal chief, and 2 elders as the informants. The data were collected by using observation, interview, and FGD (Focus Group Discussion). The study discovered that students could effectively and enthusiastically learn the social function, generic structure, and linguistic features of the contextual reading material, Senggi folktale. They also indirectly do cultural heritage preservation and get the good socio-cultural values revealed in Senggi folktale.

Abstract

Ehabla is one of the Sentani people’s oral poems. As a socio-cultural product,  this song is  the cultural asset that should be maintained because it expresses social and moral values that can be used as a medium of learning as well as a reflection of the socio-cultural dynamics of the Sentani community. One of the lessons contained in the ehabla is the value of character education. In fact, this ehabla  is no longer recognized by some Sentani people, especially the younger generation. This is related to the loosening of social and traditional values that take place in villages near cities which are very likely to spread to other communities living on remote islands. Therefore, this paper wants to bring back this ehabla to life. This paper aims at  exploring the educational values depicted in ehabla. The data of ehabla were collected in East Sentani, namely Asei Island, Waena, and Yokiwa through interviews and Focus Group Discussions with informants, i.e.  tribal chiefs and Sentani elders in January-March 2022. From the data analysis, the educational values revealed from ehabla are (1) hard work, (2) cooperation, (3) harmony, (4) respect for others,  (5) natural conservation, and (6) pride in their place of originKeywords: ehabla, oral poem, Sentani people, education values

Abstract

Sentani people are rich in cultural heritages, one of which is traditional sports/games (TSG) which Sentani children no longer recognize. Preservation and socialization need to be done to avoid its extinction. This activity is one of the initiatives to reintroduce TSG to Sentani children. The purpose of this service activity is to (a) introduce TSG to children in Yokiwa Village; (b) teach TSG to children in Yokiwa Village; (c) engage children to socialize, recognize, and learn the character of their peers through exercising/playing. This activity involved around 25 children from Yokiwa Village aged 8-12 years. Besides, the instructors and parents of Yokiwa village (20 people) were involved. Activities were carried out at the obae (meeting place) and its yard between May-June 2023. This service used participation method and collaboration among lecturers and students. The members of the community service worked together with the students to carry out the TSG and did an evaluation of the material to be used in learning. In practice, the service members were directly involved in the introduction and practice of TSG and related them to the development of children's character. The results of this activity showed (1) the children recognized their ancestor's TSG, (2) the children liked to play TSG, and (3) the children learned that in exercising/playing TSG they needed patience, mutual cooperation, hard work, sportivity, discipline, thoroughness as well as cooperation. Abstract

Sentani tribe in Papua had diverse cultural heritages that have now been neglected. One of them is wood carving. Despite its aesthetic and socio-cultural values, wood carving (ohomo) has not been acknowledged by most of the young Sentani generation. Thus, preservation is needed so that wood carving can be acknowledged, appreciated, and disseminated. One way of preserving this unique wisdom is by using it as a medium for teaching the English language. This will also help the learning process to be more contextual and challenging. By focusing on learning to speak, the objective of this study is to explore the strategies for teaching speaking using wood carving. This descriptive-qualitative study was conducted in Jayapura Regency Papua between May and July 2022. Data on wood carvings were collected between May and July 2022 from several informants, namely tribal chiefs, wood carvers, Sentani elders, and parents in East Sentani (Waena and Asei Island) and Central Sentani (Hobong and Yoboi). Teaching materials of wood carvings were tried out to 20 students of Senior High School Grade X from 4 different schools in Jayapura Regency via formal class and field trip. By infusing wood carving in learning to speak, the study found two important things, namely (1) the students were enthusiastic and motivated in speaking, and their confidence, as well as self-esteem, were improved; (2) the students appreciated wood carving as their cultural heritage and proud of their identity. Teachers’ creativity in infusing culture and their commitment to teaching played a significant role in reinforcing students’ appreciation of their culture and improvement in their speaking ability.

Abstract

Papuan children generally like hearing and reading stories with Papuan backgrounds. Unfortunately, there are not many children stories of this kind. Therefore, we feel it is necessary to train elementary school principals and teachers in Jayapura Municipality to write children stories. The aim of this activity is to train principals and teachers (a) to write children stories with Papuan background, (b) understand the stages of writing children stories, (c) to be able to infuse nature and culture and (d) to rewrite folkltales in children language. This activity was carried out in Horison Hotel Padang Bulan in February 2024 and involved teams from Cenderawasih University and the Papua Province Language Center. There were twenty teachers and principals from various elementary schools in Jayapura Municipality attended this training. The team worked together to prepare material about the importance of children stories, the structure of children stories, story grading and story boards. The team also involved Tobati and Skouw language translators because several children stories were translated into those languages. The end of this activity shows that the teachers (1) are able to create children stories with a Papuan background using the rules they have learned; (2) are able to produce children stories based on the reading grades. Besides, translation of the stories into Tobati and Skouw languages can be executed as well.Through this training the principals and teachers are able to produce contextual children story books.  Keywords: contextual Papuan children stories; children book leveling; language preservation; Tobati language; Skouw language

Abstract

Papua is rich with cultural heritages: hundreds of vernacular languages, tribes, folklores and other unique traditions. Unfortunately, these heritages are not recognized by the young generation anymore. Modernization, technology, and new comers are assumed as the background. As the capital of the province, Jayapura is the most influenced place for the changes. As an attempt to re-introduce and preserve the ancestors cultural heritages, cultural infusion in learning English (as one type of learning) is regarded important. From seven tribes living in Jayapura, as the first step, Sentani is chosen as the priority. This paper discusses English learning materials by infusing Sentani culture. Folktales are chosen as learning materials for Elementary School students, malo[1] for Junior High School students, the procedure to make kayi/ifa[2] for Senior High Schoo students. This infusion hopes that young generation is able to learn English as well as to acknowledge one of the cultural heritages of Papua. They can be strongly rooted in their culture and respect others culture.
