Abstract

Sea cucumbers are special marine resources that have high protein content and high economic value. Some of them are commercially important culture species in Asian countries. It is interesting to study, because the composition and diversity of sea cucumbers are influenced by the environment in which they live. The purpose of this study was to determine the composition and diversity of sea cucumbers (Holothuroidea) and water quality (salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen and pH) suitable for the life of sea cucumbers (Holothuroidea) in the waters of Pasir Putih Beach Pangandaran, West Java. Sampling was conducted using line transect and quadrant transect methods, sea cucumber samples were collected by hand picking and then in-situ identified. The results showed that the highest species composition was Holothuria atra (29.62%), Stichopus sp. (25.93%), Holothuria scabra (18.52%), Synapta maculata (14.81%) and the lowest Holothuria marmorata. Sea cucumber diversity was categorised as low (H‘: 1.27-1.36) and the highest species diversity was Holothuria atra (H’: 1.06). The water quality at Pasir Putih Beach Pangandaran is quite good for sea cucumber (Holothuridea) life, with water parameters such as temperature ranging from 30-30.3 °C, salinity 31-31.5 ppt, pH 7.5-8, and dissolved oxygen (DO) 5.5 mg/l.

Abstract

Gracilaria sp. is a seaweed with high economic value and is able to produce natural pigments in the form of carotenoids. The purpose of this study was to determine the value of the carotenoid content of Gracilaria sp., to determine the ecological conditions (physicochemical) of the water and to determine the relationship between these measurement variables. The method used was a survey method with a spatial approach (4 stations) and temporal (4 seasons). For the carotenoid variable, Gracilaria sp. was measured using a UV-Vis 1800V spectrophotometer. This study used Principal Component Analysis to determine the relationship between ecological factors and the carotenoid content of Gracilaria sp. The carotenoid content obtained spatially ranged from 14.03-31.10 mg/L and temporally 3.86-35.52 mg/L. The ecological conditions of the silvofishery area spatio-temporally have conditions that can be tolerated for the formation of carotenoids. The relationship between carotenoid content and ecological factors spatially produces an eigenvalue of 84.82% with F1 60.82% and F2 24.00%, with characteristics influenced by anthropogenic. Temporally produces an eigenvalue of 80.26% with F1 42.50% and F2 37.76%, with characteristics influenced by rainfall.

Abstract

Benthic foraminifera are types of organisms that are sensitive to environmental changes, so they are often used as a bioindicator for aquatic environmental conditions. The purpose of this study was to determine the community structure of benthic foraminifera community, sediment types and the relationship between the abundance of foraminifera with the sediment types in the eastern waters of Segara Anakan Lagoon in Cilacap. Method used in this study was a survey method. Samples were taken by using random sampling method. The study was conducted at 5 stations with 3 repetitions. Laboratory observations carried out included the types and numbers of benthic foraminifera. Community structure of foraminifera among stations were analyzed using one-way ANOVA, while the relationship between community structures and water quality parameters was analyzed using Pearson correlation. The results showed that in the the eastern waters of Segara Anakan Lagoon there were 58 species of foraminifera which abundance ranged from 532 ind/m2 to 927 ind/m2. The diversity index of foraminifera was in the medium to high diversity categories. The uniformity index of foraminifera was in the high uniformity in a stable community. The dominance index of foraminifera was in the low category. The sediment types was fine sand, medium sand and coarse sand. The relationship between the abundance of foraminifera with the sediment types was strong with high R values (0.763-0.809).
