Abstract

English language learning for immigrant children in Malaysia faces complex challenges, ranging from low motivation to learn, limited access to formal education, to minimal understanding and utilization of digital learning media. Based on these conditions, this international Community Service (PkM) program aims to improve the English skills of immigrant children through the implementation of Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL), expand their access to quality learning, and build learning independence through the use of accessible mobile technology. This activity was carried out at the Sentul Guidance Center, Kuala Lumpur, with a focus on the application of MALL as a learning approach that is flexible, easily accessible, and tailored to student needs. This activity was carried out through several stages: socialization, training in the use of digital media, intensive mentoring, implementation of YouTube-based learning videos, and regular evaluations. The results of the activity showed a significant increase in the participants' English skills, particularly in aspects of vocabulary mastery, listening skills, speaking skills, and confidence in using English. The average pre-test score of 45 participants increased to 75 in the post-test. Furthermore, 83% of students responded positively to the use of MALL, finding learning more enjoyable, interactive, and flexible. These findings confirm that MALL is a humanistic, inclusive, and effective learning approach for vulnerable communities such as immigrant children, while also opening up new opportunities for developing sustainable learning models in the future.

Abstract

This study analyzes the effectiveness of digital storytelling based on the folklore "Malin Kundang" in improving the understanding of moral values, bilingual communication skills, and digital skills of elementary school students in SK Senawang, Seremban, Malaysia. The program was designed using a Participatory Action-Based Learning approach and an Experiential Learning framework that emphasizes hands-on experience, reflection, and digital content production. A total of 100 students aged 10–12 participated in animation screenings, bilingual discussions (Malay-English), creative workshops, and moral retelling and reflection activities. Data were collected through observation, visual documentation, student work, and teacher interviews, then analyzed descriptively and qualitatively through source triangulation. The results indicate that digital storytelling effectively clarified understanding of moral values through visualization of conflict and consequences, increased students' confidence in using English through familiar story contexts, and developed creativity and digital literacy through drawing, animation, and voice-over activities. The program also strengthened teachers' pedagogical capacity and institutional collaboration as a model for culture- and technology-based education relevant to the Southeast Asian region.

Abstract

Abstract Background: Masculinity is commonly associated with men, which leads children’s stories to reinforce narrow gender stereotypes. As these stories are translated and circulated across cultures, translation choices may either maintain or reshape such representations. However, the translation of female masculinity in children’s stories remains underexplored, particularly through transitivity perspective. This study examines StoryWeaver translations portraying female masculinity to analyze how masculinity is identified using Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), how it is translated, and how translation techniques affect its representation. Methodology: This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with five purposively selected StoryWeaver stories. Credibility was ensured through data source triangulation via document analysis and methodological triangulation through focus group discussion (FGD). SFL was used to identify constructions of masculinity, while translation techniques analysis examined how masculinity was translated from the source to the target language. A double case study design treated the five stories as individual cases for cross-case comparison across different authors and translators. Data were analysed using Spradley’s ethnographic procedures. Findings: Five forms of masculinity were identified, realized through material, mental, relational, behavioral, and existential processes, revealing how female masculinity is linguistically constructed in children’s narratives. Established equivalents dominated the translations, while deletion also influenced the representation of masculinity. Conclusion: Translation techniques play a role in shaping how female masculinity is represented, with established equivalents tending to maintain meaning and deletion leading to shifts in representation. Originality: The study addresses the limited research on translating female masculinity in children’s literature and shows how translation choices shape gender meanings for young readers across languages and cultures.
