Abstract

AbstractIntroduction: Despite the plentiful availability of protein from fish and other essential food sources in coastal communities, coastal communities still face the issue of undernutrition. This study aimed to assess the association between feeding practices among toddlers and the incidence of stunting in the coastal area. Methods: We conducted a community-based case-control study in Gresik. We assessed the feeding patterns (feeding practice, food quality, and food safety) of 90 children aged 24–59 months using a structured questionnaire. We generated frequencies and percentages and ran a bivariate test to determine factors associated with stunting using the Chi-Square testResults: The mother’s age among the case and control group was in the ideal age category (<20 and >35 years old). Most respondents among the case group and control group had low family income (less than the wage minimum of Gresik regency IDR 4.372.030,5). Most of the respondents in the case group (57.8%) had low education (junior high school or less). The feeding pattern variable consists of three aspects. In the aspect of food quality, most of the stunting group (62.2%) indicated that children had poor food quality. In the aspect of feeding practices, most of the stunting group (53.3%) indicated that the feeding practices provided were inadequate. In terms of food safety, most of the stunting group (68.9%) had good food safety. There is an association between aspects of food quality with the incidence of stunting (p-value =0.003; OR =3,647; 95% CI 1.524-8.728). There was no association between aspects of feeding practices (p-value=0.138) and aspects of food safety (p-value=0.141) with the incidence of stunting. Conclusion: The feeding patterns of children, especially the food quality aspect, in the coastal area of Gresik Regency significantly influence their nutritional status, with a direct correlation between food quality and the incidence of stunting. There should be an increase in malnutrition interventions in this community, focusing mostly on educating individuals about improving child nutrition by utilizing the food sources that are already available.

Abstract

Issues related to waste do not only occur in urban environments. Coastal areas are also not free from issues related to waste. Not only rubbish from the local community but rubbish from tourists also contributes to the large amount of trash in coastal areas. Waste that is not appropriately managed in the environment can be a source of disease. For this reason, it is necessary to increase public knowledge regarding waste processing to prevent the emergence of disease. Apart from that, the public is educated regarding the disease's symptoms and how to treat it. This community service activity occurred in Watu Ulo, Sumberejo Village, Ambulu SubDistrict, Jember Regency. The training was attended by 23 participants who were coastal youth. The results obtained were based on gender; the majority are male, and based on the occupation, the majority are fishermen, and the knowledge of respondents increased after counselling. Conclusion From this training, there has been increased respondents' knowledge through education about waste management socialization.

Abstract

Obesity is one of the global health problems whose incidence is expected to continue to increase every year. Obesity in adolescents is caused by many factors including changes in lifestyle, physical activity, diet with food intake that exceeds the body's needs, improper eating behavior by consuming more fast food, packaged food, and food with unbalanced nutrients. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between macronutrient diet, fiber, and physical activity with the incidence of obesity at Nuris Jember High School. This method is an observational study with a case-control design. Sample selection using purpose sampling of as many as 81 respondents consisting of 27 cases and 54 controls. The research instruments used were weight measurement, height, SQ-FFQ form, and PAL. Data were processed using statistical applications using the chi-square test and if not eligible, the Fisher's exact test was performed with a significant value of p less than 0.005. The results of macronutrient consumption patterns and physical activity have a significant relationship with the incidence of obesity (p less than 0.005). While the study could not analyze fiber consumption patterns due to homogeneous results, the existing findings provide a solid foundation for targeted nutrition education programs and public health strategies. This study concludes that there is a relationship between macronutrient consumption patterns and physical activity with the incidence of obesity. This conclusion underscores the importance of balanced diets and regular physical activity in preventing and managing obesity among adolescents.

Abstract

Background: Many university students, including final-year engineering students in Indonesia, often use cigarette smoking as a coping strategy to manage academic stress and psychological distress, despite its well-documented health risks. Objective: This study aimed to determine the relationship between coping strategy type and smoking Among Final-year Engineering Students at college. Methods:  An analytic study with a cross-sectional approach. The study was conducted in Jember, East Java, from October 2022 to July 2023. The population was 779 engineering students at the University of Jember. The sampling method used was cluster sampling, and the Isaac and Michael formulas obtained 260 samples. Students filled out questionnaires distributed by researchers using the Self-Reporting Questionnaire method through the Google Form platform. Results: Most respondents were male (77%), and more than half were smokers (64.9%). Smoker respondents started smoking at 15-19 years (50,9%). Respondents experienced moderate stress levels (78.5%), and 4,5% experienced high stress levels. As coping stress type, most respondents were problem-focused coping (91,7%), with smoker respondents at 92,4% and non-smoker respondents at 90,3%. This high prevalence of problem-focused coping among both smokers and non-smokers suggests that these students may be equipped with effective strategies for managing stress. There is no association between the type of coping stress and cigarette smoking (p-value: 0,981), indicating that other factors may play a more critical role in influencing smoking habits among this population, such as social influences, peer pressure, or environmental factors that are not captured by the coping strategy framework. Conclusion: Despite finding no association between the type of coping stress and cigarette smoking, the study highlights the prevalent use of problem-focused coping strategies among engineering students, suggesting the need for further research into the complex interplay between stress management and smoking habits among this demographic.

Abstract

Anemia is a common health issue among adolescent girls, including female students. Adolescents tend to experience various behavioral changes that affect their health, including anemia. Good health behaviors are shaped by positive attitudes and knowledge. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between knowledge, attitude, and behavior related to nutritional anemia and the incidence of anemia among female undergraduate students at the Jember Regency. This observational study used a cross-sectional design. This study was conducted between February and May 2024 at the University of Jember. The sample consisted of 109 respondents, selected through multistage sampling. Data were collected through questionnaires, anthropometric measurements, and hemoglobin levels using point-of-care testing (POCT) blood tests. Data analysis was performed using the chi-squared test. Significant relationships were found between behaviors related to anemia and anemia (p=0,009; PR= 1,58), knowledge of anemia and anemia (p=0,013; PR= 1,45), and attitudes toward anemia and anemia (p=0,013; PR= 1,52). These findings indicate that behavior, knowledge, and attitudes related to anemia are associated with the incidence of anemia.  We expected adolescents to be more proactive in preventing anemia and in seeking more information about it. Educational institutions should integrate anemia prevention education (nutrition, importance of iron supplements, and healthy eating patterns) into campus curricula. Moreover, they provide iron-rich foods and vitamin C source meals for faculty canteens.

Abstract

Hypertension affects approximately 10% of pregnancies globally and remains a leading cause of maternal mortality and morbidity. Mothers with hypertension in their first pregnancy are at an elevated risk for preeclampsia in subsequent pregnancies.  This study aimed to analyze the relationship between stress and high-fat intake and the incidence of hypertension in pregnant women. This was an observational study that used a cross-sectional approach from May to June 2024. The study population included pregnant women who were patients of the Maesan Health Center and residing in Bondowoso Regency. The sample selection used Slovin's formula: 73 out of 263 pregnant women. Stress variables were measured using the Revised Prenatal Distress Questionnaire (NuPDQ), a 2 × 24-hour recall questionnaire for fat intake measurements, and blood pressure measurements using a tensimeter. Univariate analysis described each variable, including respondents' stress status and high-fat dietary intake. Moreover, bivariate analysis used chi-square tests to assess the relationship between the independent variables (stress and fat intake) and the dependent variable (hypertension). This study found that there was an association between stress and high-fat intake and the incidence of hypertension, with p-values <0,001 and <0,001, respectively.  We recommend addressing both stress management and dietary habits as crucial in prenatal care programmes.
