Abstract

The aims of this research are first, to know whether or not the use of pairing skype can increase the students speaking ability. Second, to know whether or not the use of Pairing Skype can increase students motivation. Third, to know the strenghts and weaknesses of pairing skype. The subject of the research was the students of 1A of English Department of IKIP PGRI Madiun consisting of 28 students. It was a classroom action research. The researcher did some steps for each cycle. They were planning, action, observation, and reflection. In collecting the data, the researcher applied several techniques including observation, interview, questionnaire, and test. The quantitative data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics. It compared between the scores of pre test (before implementing Pairing Skype) and post test (after implementing Pairing Skype), while the qualitative data were analyzed by using constant comparative method which consist of; comparing Incidents applicable to each category, integrating categories into their properties, delimiting theory, and writing theory. The results of this research are first, the use of pairing skype can improve students speaking skill. This is indicated by some factors as follows: (1) Students are able to express ideas and content. Students focused on the purpose and the main idea of the materials; (2) Students are able to make a good organization. Students could make effective organization of the materials; (3) Students are able to use the language. Students could use correct grammar and descriptive language to make strong impact; (4) Students are able to deliver the materials. Students can use eye contacts and gestures effectively. The improvement can also be seen from their results of the post-test. The means of the scores improve from cycle to cycle. The highest score of the post test 2 is 80 and the mean score is 75. Second, the use of pairing skype can improve students motivation. Students are active and always curious to know the next materials. Moreover, the students can work individually and also in group. The speaking ability of students improve from cycle to cycle eventhough some of students are still noisy.Keywords: Speaking Ability Pairing Skype, CCM

Abstract

This study aimed at finding out to what extent spelling bee games improve vocabulary mastery and explore the advantages and disadvantages of spelling bee games. It discussed the implementation of the spelling bee game in English Language Teaching at the Junior High School. This research implemented spelling bee games as one of the ways to improve students’ vocabulary mastery. This study used the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method which was conducted in two cycles. The researcher used three data collection methods, namely observation, questionnaires, and tests. The data for this study were their written test results by answering questions about the vocabulary they had learned. The data was assessed based on the number of words that the students successfully answered. To determine whether the percentage was high or low, the researcher used the scoring criteria. The results of this study serve as references for future research on spelling bee games, such as benefits, drawback, challenges or opportunities in English language teaching especially at junior high school level.

Abstract

Abstract Background: Women working is no longer a rare thing because of the era progresses. For a woman, it is very important to balance her life at work and at home because a balanced work life allows working women to maximize their potential, considering the importance of work life balance for working women. Objective: This research aims to determine work life balance in working women in terms of psychological well-being and family supportive supervision behavior. Method: The data collection method in this research uses three scales, namely the Work life balance scake, Psychological well being scale, and Family support supervision behaviors scale. Data analysis this research uses regression analysis. Results: The results show that psychological well being and family supportive supervision behaviors influence work life balance in women who work either together or separately for the two psychological well being and family supportive variables. Conclusion: The work life balance felt by working women occurs when working women feel psychological well being and family supportive supervision behaviors in the work and family environment.   Abstrak Latar Belakang: Perempuan bekerja bukan lagi hal yang langka seiring dengan kemajuan jaman. Bagi seorang perempuan, sangat penting untuk menyeimbangkan kehidupannya di tempat kerja dan di rumah karena kehidupan kerja yang seimbang memungkinkan perempuan bekerja untuk memaksimalkan potensi yang dimilikinya, mengingat pentingnya keseimbangan kehidupan kerja bagi perempuan bekerja. Tujuan: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui keseimbangan kehidupan kerja pada wanita bekerja ditinjau dari kesejahteraan psikologis dan perilaku supervisi suportif keluarga. Metode: Metode pengumpulan data dalam penelitian ini menggunakan tiga skala, yaitu skala Work life balance, skala Psychological wellbeing, dan skala Family support supervision behaviors. Analisis data penelitian ini menggunakan analisis regresi. Hasil: Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa perilaku kesejahteraan psikologis dan pengawasan suportif keluarga berpengaruh terhadap keseimbangan kehidupan kerja pada wanita yang bekerja baik secara bersama-sama maupun terpisah untuk kedua variabel kesejahteraan psikologis dan dukungan keluarga. Simpulan: Keseimbangan kehidupan kerja yang dirasakan wanita bekerja terjadi ketika wanita bekerja merasakan kesejahteraan psikologis dan perilaku pengawasan yang suportif dari keluarga di lingkungan kerja dan keluarga.

Abstract

Cohesion has become a crucial component of academic writing that promotes the semantic connection within phrases and sentences. The objectives of this literature review research are to identify different forms of cohesions and the most common form of cohesion in articles on EFL academic writing. This study extracted records from Google Scholar and Scopus databases and selected 20 studies in the last five years out of 700 on the use of cohesions in the writing of EFL students. The data was gathered by sorting similar messages, finding cohesions, clarifying cohesions, and counting the cohesions with the highest percentage. The research results show that the published articles containing cohesions represent the reference (35%), paired conjunctions (15%), reiteration (40%), and collocation (10%). The most common type of cohesion is reiteration, which is essential for comprehending what the authors mean in their published works. Cohesions in theoretical and practical grounds contribute to the explicitness of semantic components of words or phrases to generate the messages conveyed to readers.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are to investigate the use of WhatsApp messenger to develop students’ writing skills, and to find out the benefits and challenges of the use of WhatsApp messenger to develop students’ writing skills. The design of this study was classroom action research. The researcher used observation, interview, and test to collect the data. In analyzing the data, the researcher followed the procedure of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The study reports that there was an improvement of the students’ recount text writing skill through scientific approach. In cycle I, the percentage of scores covers steps of rhetorical was (67.50%), grammar (71.25%), vocabulary (66.25%), clarity of meaning (67.50%), and relation between ideas (63.75%). In cycle II, the percentage of scores covers steps of rhetorical was (78.75%), grammar (78.75%), vocabulary (76.25%), clarity of meaning (87.50%), and relation between ideas (81.25%). This study also reports some benefits of using WhatsApp messenger were; the students used their creativity in teaching and learning activity, were interested in teaching and learning processes, and conveyed their assumptions in associating and networking freely. In contrast, it also had challenges in teaching and learning processes. The challenges were; most of students were not enthusiastic to follow teaching and learning of WhatsApp messenger. They must be persuaded to ask questions in questioning phase and they must be directed to be disciplined in the classroom.

Abstract

The study aims at exposing the discovery learning applied at high education. The study applies descriptive qualitative design applying phenomenology. The subjects in this study were 3 lecturers of a private university in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The data were gained from interviews and documentations. The data are analyzed using triangulation involving data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion. The analysis results show that there are benefits and challenges of discovery learning applied in higher education. In conclusion, discovery learning has been one of alternative teaching ways in higher education. Keywords: discovery learning, English language teaching, higher education

Abstract

According to numerous views of self-acceptance, those who can accept themselves are aware of their traits and are not caught in anger, blaming others, or pitying themselves for their limitations. The goal of this study is to determine self-acceptance in inmates based on gender differences and level of education. The study hypothesizes differences in self-acceptance among inmates based on gender and educational level. This study involved 124 Class IIA Yogyakarta Correctional Facility inmates and Class IIB Women's Correctional Facility. The purposive sampling technique was employed to select the participants. The data collecting technique employed was a self-acceptance scale. The data analysis technique performed was the 2-way ANOVA. Hypothesis testing yielded a FoAB value of 0.991, with a significance level 0.000 (P <0.01). As a result, the study's hypothesis has been proven: there are differences in self-acceptance among inmates based on gender and education level. The researchers tested separately to see if there were differences in the self-acceptance of inmates based on gender and obtained a FoA value of 0.659 with a significance level of 0.000 (P < 0.01). There is no difference in self-acceptance based on education level where the FoB value is 0.000 with a significant level of 0.928 (P> 0.05).Keywords: Gender, Inmates, Self-Acceptance, Level of education
