Abstract

Cohesion has become a crucial component of academic writing that promotes the semantic connection within phrases and sentences. The objectives of this literature review research are to identify different forms of cohesions and the most common form of cohesion in articles on EFL academic writing. This study extracted records from Google Scholar and Scopus databases and selected 20 studies in the last five years out of 700 on the use of cohesions in the writing of EFL students. The data was gathered by sorting similar messages, finding cohesions, clarifying cohesions, and counting the cohesions with the highest percentage. The research results show that the published articles containing cohesions represent the reference (35%), paired conjunctions (15%), reiteration (40%), and collocation (10%). The most common type of cohesion is reiteration, which is essential for comprehending what the authors mean in their published works. Cohesions in theoretical and practical grounds contribute to the explicitness of semantic components of words or phrases to generate the messages conveyed to readers.

Abstract

East Java’s folklore has inherited character education values from generation to generation because they align with relics of the Hindu-Buddhist kingdoms. This research identifies and describes character education values in East Java’s folklore. The data was gathered by critically reading the entire discourse and dialogue in the folklore texts, allowing indigenous values to be explored. Then, a content analysis was used to analyze the data concerning such values, which was classified/grouped further in line with Komensky's theories concerning the types and theme of character education values. The findings revealed that the themes of East Java’s folklore deal with not only positive character education values but also those that deviate from the models of core values, such as (1) gambling and slander in the Cindelaras story and the Banyuwangi origin story (2) crime based on envy in the Golden Conch Story, (3) coercion of will in the story of Origins of Reog Ponorogo, (4) human sacrifice offerings in the stories of Rara Anteng and Joko Seger, and (5) fear-filled environment causes chaos in Joko Dolog's tale. The importance of character education in East Java’s folklore requires teaching resources for character education integrated into various subjects, mainly studying the Indonesian language and literature. Nevertheless, before using it as a teaching tool, educators must weigh the benefits and drawbacks for their students' positive development. The importance of moral education concerning good and evil, quality, social education, and cooperation are other educational ideals that merit consideration. This evidence shows how incorporating folklore into literary works is presented through a straightforward story framework rich in moral values.

Abstract

Writing strategies are pivotal in enhancing students' writing competence, necessitating a comprehensive and cohesive approach to implement them in diverse instructional contexts. This study examines an all-encompassing framework integrating different writing strategies to improve students’ writing competence, potentially enhancing students' writing skills significantly. It also suggests culturally responsive pedagogical practices that address diverse students’ needs. By thoroughly investigating 16 of 250 previously published articles, the effectiveness of metacognitive strategy-based training can be identified while exploring technological integration, culturally responsive teaching, and self-assessment methodologies. The key findings indicate that metacognitive strategies positively impact students’ writing performance, and they also shed light on the impact of cultural context on writing strategies and their implementations in culturally responsive instructional strategies. Furthermore, self-assessment promotes increased autonomy and self-confidence in identifying students' writing abilities. The study's findings suggest that a comprehensive and cohesive approach, incorporating several methodologies, can more effectively meet students' varying needs and foster enduring enhancements in writing competence. From this perspective, a novel approach is proposed to improve writing instruction in various contexts by addressing limitations in preceding study findings and reexamining them in future studies.

Abstract

Creative writing provides an effective framework for cultivating fundamental values in educational environments, hence improving student engagement, creativity, and cognitive growth.  This study integrates findings from several academic sources to clarify how creative writing promotes values, including self-expression, critical thinking, inclusion, and cultural understanding.  Integrating process-oriented and reflective skills, creative writing fosters cognitive and emotional development.  Ethnographic and cross-cultural studies demonstrate its adaptability across many cultural and educational contexts, emphasizing the significance of context-specific methodologies. Obstacles, including inadequate teacher preparation and inflexible curriculum frameworks, hinder the successful implementation of these values.  Recommendations encompass the enhancement of teacher training programs, the building of flexible curricula, the cultivation of supportive settings, and the commitment to ongoing research and adaptation.  Ultimately, creative writing serves as an effective instrument for nurturing fundamental educational principles and promoting an inclusive and contemplative learning atmosphere.  As educational environments transform, a steadfast dedication to these principles is essential for adjusting creative writing methodologies to address varied student requirements, thereby guaranteeing its lasting influence on global education.

Abstract

This research examines students' reflections on the integration of theoretical knowledge and practical application within a translation curriculum that combines academic instruction with sessions led by industry practitioners. Sixteen students in their fifth semester from the English Education Department of Universitas Sarjanawiyata Tamansiswa participated in this investigation, having engaged in both theoretical lectures and practical workshops as components of the Principles in Translating and Interpreting course. Data were obtained through reflective journals and semi-structured interviews, subsequently undergoing thematic analysis. The results indicate that academic sessions provided crucial theoretical foundations, whereas practitioner-led activities facilitated students in applying, testing, and attaining a deeper comprehension of these theories within authentic translation environments. Systematic reflection enabled students to identify challenges, develop effective translation strategies, and enhance their confidence and professional mindset. Many participants reported shifting from seeing themselves solely as students to perceiving themselves as emerging professionals. Supported by recent research highlighting reflective practice as a catalyst for developing professional competence and learner autonomy, these findings underscore the value of designing translation curricula that integrate theory, real-world practice, and structured reflection. The study further suggests that such integration can strengthen students’ readiness for the demands of professional translation work and guide curriculum developers in creating more practice-oriented, reflective learning environments.
