Abstract

This article focuses on the contestation of local Islam and salafy at Narmada, West Lombok. This tension is inevitable thing, since they have different way of understanding and realizing Islamic teaching. Local Islam wants the locality and universality co-present to actualize ideal Islamic teaching, on the contrary, salafy wants to purify Islamic teaching from any kind of local traditions. Here, Local Islam of Sasak Narmada refers to Islam which has long interaction with several indigenous belief of Sasaknese manifested in Wetu Telu and Wetu Limeand salafy refers to several (not all) salafy?s followers who interact with local Muslims. This difference brings into contestation when salafy popularize bid?ah, syncretic or syirk for local Muslims adherent in one hand and local Muslims want to save Islamic teaching from salafy in another hand. The contestation is classified into religious conceptions and ritual. Many Wetu Lime?s followers enjoy their religious conceptions and rituals without leaving several Wetu Telu traditions and without being afraid of falling into polytheism for a main reason that what they do is one means of manfesting Islamic universal values in local traditions and having no intention to be polytheist. This study shows that looking for the meaning behind the conception or observed ritual is an essential thing in diverse internal religious belief to spread peace in which theology needs to be accompanied by other perspective.

Abstract

Although Lombok of West Nusa Tenggara has gained good international reputation for its halal tourism (2015-2018), tourism in the region is not without obstacles. The Sasak-Lombok community, for instance, still refuses the concept of halal tourism because it is likely to cause harm to conventional tourism. This article will examine potentials, challenges, and the role of Islamic education in halal tourism in Lombok. It uses a descriptive-qualitative approach, where data collection is obtained from focus group discussions, in-depth interviews, document analysis, and media reporting. Meanwhile, data validity testing is done with triangulation technique. After a profound analysis, this research found that: (1) the potentials for halal tourism in Lombok are made of its natural beauty, cultural distinctiveness, and tradition of the local community predominated by Muslims; (2) the challenges of halal tourism in Lombok include two things: a) conceptual challenges that deal with the absence of terms representing the desires of all parties, and b) practical challenges that deal with economic, environmental, social, and cultural matters; (3) Islamic education?as a value, activity, or institution?plays an important role in disseminating representative concepts for halal tourism acceptable to all parties, i.e. the local community, tourism actors, and government. This acceptance is one of the keys to the successful development of halal tourism in Lombok.

Abstract

The relationship between salafism and indigeneous moslem at Lombok caused several contestations and needed to be studied deeply. In this study, salafism and indigeneous moslem will be classified into rural and urban. This classification based on their unique relations: (1) salafism gets high resistence from rural indigenous moslems, (2) meanwhile, salafism receives tolerance from urban indigenous moslem. This study uses qualitative approach with interpretive paradigm to answer causes of rural indigeneous moslems resistences toward rural salafism, causes of urban indigeneous moslems tolerance toward urban salafism and how to formulate conflict management based on multicultural competences. This study shows that different responses of indigenous moslems toward salafism aren’t only caused by the contestations of Ahlu-al sunnah but also many other elements. Then, multicultural competences needed to be developed by religious elite as an alternative to manage conflict in plural society for the sake of peace built on reciprocal multicultural values.

Abstract

This study examines bullying in leading schools in Mataram City, focusing on its root causes and exploring solutions grounded in Islamic legal perspectives. Bullying significantly affects students’ mental and physical well-being, academic performance, and social development, underscoring the importance of fostering a safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environment. Employing a qualitative approach, the research integrates legal, sociocultural, and educational frameworks to analyze the persistence of bullying within the unique social and institutional dynamics of Mataram. The study emphasizes Islamic principles, including justice (adl), compassion (rahmah), and mutual respect (ta’awun), as foundational for addressing bullying. Practical strategies inspired by Islamic teachings, such as promoting care (tas’awun), enhancing positive interactions, and implementing preventive measures through school policies and religious education, are proposed. Community involvement, particularly the roles of parents, teachers, and religious leaders, is highlighted as essential for supporting student well-being. The findings suggest that integrating educational reforms with Islamic ethical values effectively combats bullying, ensuring both immediate intervention and long-term cultural shifts toward respect and harmony. This comprehensive framework, incorporating legal and cultural dimensions, aims to create nurturing educational environments aligned with justice and community welfare.
