Abstract

Music education is a realm of study concerned with the teaching and learning of music. This music education will develop affective, motor skills in students who play instruments and expand cognitive development through reasoning and interpretation of musical notation. However, many people still underestimate music education. In the education and teaching system of music arts, especially in the last years of the 20th century, new methods emerged. One of the methods that will be discussed is the Tonika-Do Method. This article is a type of literature study and uses the exposition method in presenting the concepts contained in previous studies. The sources used contain the results of discussions about art education, music, and music education. The application of fixed "do" is not carried out as it should be from the meaning of fixed "do" itself. The reading system used in this lesson is not an fixed "do", but a system taken from the basic idea of an fixed "do" system, where 'Do' is not understood as a C, D, E note or something else, but is more understood as a number 1, which is the tone of writing in numerical notation. This fixed œdo reading system is carried out with the aim of avoiding moving 1 ('do') which is generally found in how to read numerical notation, which of course tends to make it difficult for students in a notation recognition. The learning process can include practicing the C scale, followed by the chromatic scale, etude, then entering the song.

Abstract

This article examines the creation of the UNESA anthem based on the slogan “One Step Ahead,” with the aim of strengthening the identity and spirit of Surabaya State University (UNESA) through institutional music. This song is expected to be not only a symbol of pride, but also a tool to unite the academic community with messages of progress, innovation, and togetherness. The method used is an applied creativity research design with a mixed-method approach, which includes semantic analysis of lyrics, music design, recording production, and audience perception evaluation through surveys and interviews. The results of the study show that the UNESA March song is effective in strengthening the university's image and creating strong emotional bonds among students, lecturers, and educators. The meaningful lyrics and dynamic music effectively convey motivational messages that encourage listeners to persevere and innovate. The discussion reveals that the connection between the slogan and musical elements is crucial in fostering a sense of pride and solidarity. This song has become a symbol of the university's progressive spirit, encouraging all parties to contribute to mutual achievements. The recommendation from this study is to further integrate the UNESA March song into campus life and make it part of a tradition that strengthens the university's identity. This study also provides insight for other universities to create songs of pride that reflect their values and vision.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of visual micro-skills in digital pedagogy for correcting misconceptions in trumpet playing techniques at the micro-level of motor skills, particularly in the coordination of embouchure, airflow, and breathing control. The study employs a mixed-methods approach within a design-informed pedagogical inquiry framework. A total of 25 participants were involved in a visual micro-skill-based learning intervention. Quantitative data were obtained through pre-test and post-test, while qualitative data were collected through observation, reflection, and literature review, and subsequently analyzed using paired sample t-tests and thematic analysis. The results show that the integration of video-based visual micro-skills significantly improves micro-level technical skills in trumpet playing (62.00 to 84.72; p < 0.001). Video visualization operated through close-up, slow motion, replay, and pausing clarifies techniques while revealing the coordination of embouchure, airflow, and breathing control that was previously implicit, thereby shifting learning from mechanical imitation toward reflective understanding that integrates visual perception, cognition, and motor response. These findings indicate a shift in learning from mere imitation toward a reflective-analytical process that systematically integrates visual perception, cognition, and motor response. Theoretically, this study strengthens the position of visual micro-skills as a conceptual framework for explaining technique learning at the micro level, while practically providing a foundation for developing trumpet instruction that is more accurate, adaptive, and capable of minimizing technical errors from the early stages.

Abstract

The use of vocal belting techniques is increasingly popular in Indonesian pop music because it can produce a strong, expressive, and powerful sound. However, its application has the potential to cause vocal fatigue if done without proper technique. This study explains the application of vocal belting techniques in the interpretation of the song Rapuh by Ainun Irsani as an effort to minimize the risk of vocal cord injury. The study used a qualitative descriptive method with data collection techniques through observation, documentation, and semi-structured interviews with Ainun Irsani and Adi Nugroho. Data analysis refers to the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña model which includes data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study indicate that the application of belting supported by breath control, resonance, body posture, articulation, and systematic vocal warm-ups can produce optimal sound quality without increasing the risk of vocal fatigue. External factors also influence the success of this technique. The research findings emphasize the importance of systematic belting technique learning by paying attention to technical, physiological, and vocal health aspects.

Abstract

Abstract

Digital media research in music education has largely evaluated outcomes, engagement, and motivation, leaving unexplained how visual representation actually reconstructs technical understanding at the level of fine motor coordination. This study tests and explains the effect of visual micro skills the explicit video representation of rapid, partly unobservable coordinations of embouchure, air-stream direction, and respiratory support on the correction of technical errors in trumpet playing. A convergent mixed-methods design was applied to 25 purposively selected participants: undergraduate wind-instrument students and community drum-band players in Surabaya, aged 18–24 years, with 1–3 years of trumpet experience and no conservatory-level formal training. The intervention consisted of a single 120-minute structured session organised into five stages (misconception framing, global viewing, focused observation, guided practice with pause, and reflection), followed by a 14-day monitored independent-practice phase. Technique was scored with a 12-indicator analytic rubric covering embouchure control, airflow control, and respiratory support, rated by two blinded independent assessors. Quantitative and qualitative strands were collected in parallel and merged through a joint display. Scores rose from 62.00 (SD = 2.94) to 84.72 (SD = 2.62), t(24) = 25.03, p < 0.001, dz = 5.01, 95% CI [20.85, 24.59]. Thematic analysis produced four themes: visual referencing replacing kinaesthetic guessing, decomposition of a fused action into observable components, relocation of corrective authority to the learner, and persistence of compensatory tension under performance pressure. Findings position visual micro-skills as an active pedagogical mechanism rather than a delivery medium. The single-group design and small purposive sample restrict causal and population inference.
