Abstract

Paraquat dichloride has been used by farmers as a herbicide to kill the grass. On the other hand, paraquatdichloride is harmful if enters to the body, causing Parkinson’s disease, since it is disrupting dopamineproduction in the substantia nigra pars compacta or dopamine pathways Nigro striatal pathway. The studywas done to fi nd out the histological changes of catecholaminergic neurons and Nigro striatal pathway causedby paraquat dichloride treatment in Wistar rats as a model of Parkinson’s disease.Twenty-two Wistar rats 3,5 months old were divided into 4 groups, 5 rats each. Group I (control group)were injected with aquabidest, while groups II, III, and IV were injected intraperitoneally with paraquatdichloride in aquabidest, with the dosage 5 , 10 and 15 mg/kg bw respectively. The rats were injected onceper week for 6 weeks. Three days after the last injection, the rats were anesthetized using xylasin (2 mg/kg)and ketamine (20 mg/kg) intramuscularly, and then were intracardiac perfused using physiological saline asprerinse solution, followed by 10% buffered formalin solution as a fi xative. After animals were fi xed, the brainswere removed and embedded in paraffi n block and cut in 12 μm thickness for immunohistochemistry stainingusing tyrosine hydroxylase antibody. The results of staining then were observed under light microscope andanalyzed descriptively. The results showed that the catecholaminergic neurons were distributed in the substantia nigrapars compacta in all treatment groups, however, the cell density were found decreased only in group IV.Catecholaminergic neurons appear in the bipolar and multipolar form, while dopamine ‘Nigro striatal pathway’was found exist in all treatment groups. From our study, histologycally the decreased of catecholaminergicneurons is only found in rats that received paraquat dichloride in dose 15 mg/kg bw for 6 weeks.

Abstract

Community service is one of the programs that must be continued to be carried out in the community. In oder to reach the farmers needed in the Sanggah Betes Farmer group, Holoama Village, Lobalain District, Rote Ndao Regency, where the availability of fresh grass in the fields and tree leaves are abundant in February to May and Straw is also abundant in harvest season (rice straw and corn) as well as forage crops (grass odot) that introduced to Rote are also increasing. So the challenge is the utilization of this extraordinary potential food source is not optimal yet. The model of service activities offered to this group was in the form of socialization and direct practice of the service committee team to livestock groups under the local service supervision which is the Livestock Office of Rote Ndao Regency. The expected results of this service activity were this livestock group becomes a central example for other livestock groups and will continue to apply the knowledge that gained.

Abstract

Chromolaena odorata, a member of Asteraceae, is a tropical shrub that grows throughout the year and can dominate pastures. The tropical weed is known as a medicinal plant and has the potential as a natural insecticide. For local people in NTT, the crude extract of the leaves is used to treat myasis on the livestock. C. odorata is also used as silage or food alternative for livestock. This study aims to determine the content of bioactive compounds in C. odorata leaves and determine the extract yield value, as scientific validation of local wisdom in NTT. This research began with the collection of fresh C. odorata leaves, extraction by maceration using 70% ethanol as solvent, solvent evaporation, and phytochemical screening. Phytochemical screening showed that the leaf extract of C. odorata from Kupang City contained high amounts of flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, triterpenes and steroids and were tested negative for saponins. The extract yield value is 6.09%, means that the extract contains bioactive compunds in high concentration. Further research needs to be done to find out in more detail the content of secondary metabolites from C. odorata leaves and its activity in promote wound healing on livestock in NTT.

Abstract

Nowadays, there is an increasing demand for medicines to treat many types of diseases. Lunasia amara is one of the medicinal plants used by Indonesian people for a long time. This study aimed to identify the secondary metabolites of L. amara stem bark using phytochemical analysis and then assess its antioxidant and antibacterial activities. Metabolite extraction will be carried out with an ethanol solvent, and antioxidant activity will be determined using the α, α-diphenyl-β-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assays. Antibacterial experiments were conducted against two types of bacteria: Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. From the results of the phytochemical investigation, the predominant compound group is alkaloid. The ethanol extract metabolites have antioxidant activity and belong to the strong antioxidant group with an IC50 value of 77.96 ppm. Antibacterial activity was weak at concentrations as high as 20%. Based on these findings, further assays can be conducted, such as cytotoxic activity against various cancer cells.

Abstract

Tolu Wei Pig Farm has a population of 444 pigs, including 14 heifers, 26 pregnant pigs, 15 parturient pigs, 153 newborn piglets, 98 weaned piglets, 5 studs, and 133 fattening pigs of various types. The pigs kept are Landrace, Duroc, and Yorkshire. This Field Work Practice (PKL) activity aims to find out and analyze housing management, the type of feed given at each growth period, mating management, health management at various breeding phases, and the implementation of waste processing at the Tolu Wei Pig Farm. The methods used are observation, interviews, practice, and education. Based on this method, it is known that the housing system implemented by the Tolu Wei Pig Farm is intensive, feeding is carried out twice a day, namely in the morning and evening with the type of feed given in the form of a mixture of pellets and pigmix, there is application of biosecurity and sanitation and treatment is carried out on sick livestock. , reproductive management is carried out by means of natural mating and artificial insemination (AI), and processing of livestock waste is carried out by collecting it in a special area for waste and pig feces by drying in the sun. The conclusion obtained is that the housing management has met good housing standards, the feed management implemented can meet nutritional needs, the health management in the form of biosecurity implemented is good, and the reproductive management implemented has met good standards.

Abstract

Rabies is a fatal zoonotic disease and is still a threat to public health, especially in areas with high populations of disease-carrying animals. In 2024, there was a case of rabies in Sillu village, one of the villages in Kupang Regency. This village area is adjacent to Camplong II village, which is the locus of the Undana Veterinary Study Program KKN. Camplong II village is a strategic location for implementing rabies socialization and education programs. This activity aimed to increase public knowledge and awareness, especially among school children, regarding the dangers of rabies, prevention, and initial handling of bites from rabies-transmitting animals (HPR). The methods used were pre-test, socialization and education, distribution of pamphlets, interactive discussions, and post-tests. The evaluation results showed an 82% increase in children's understanding of rabies after the activity took place. This program shows that the right socialization and education approach can increase public awareness in efforts to prevent rabies.

Abstract

Rabies remains a critical public health concern, particularly in areas with limited resources and insufficient preventive efforts. Early education plays a vital role in raising awareness and promoting preventive behavior. This community service activity aimed to educate elementary school children about rabies through a creative and enjoyable method—coloring activities. The program was conducted at SD Inpres Nenonaheun, located in Nunhila Village, Mollo Barat Sub-district, Timor Tengah Selatan Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. It involved interactive coloring sessions using rabies-themed educational materials specifically designed for children aged 7 to 12. This activity combined visual learning and storytelling to convey essential information about rabies transmission, symptoms, and prevention. Evaluation through pre- and post-activity questionnaires revealed a significant improvement in the children's understanding of rabies. The use of coloring activities as an educational tool proved to be an effective strategy for raising awareness among elementary school students, indicating its potential for broader application in similar rural settings.
