Abstract

Stunting is a condition of failure to thrive in children (body and brain growth) due to chronic nutrition for a long time so that children are shorter than normal children their age and have delays in intelligence. In Indonesia, the incidence of short toddlers ranks 5th in the world. Factors causing stunting can be classified into two environmental factors, namely the health of pregnant women and those who are less healthy. To overcome this problem, Group 02 KKN UNS 2022 held a socialization on eradicating stunting and food waste management practices, entitled BENING socialization "Berantas Stunting" and NGEPAS UTANG "Pengelolaan Sampah Masakan untuk Ibu Tangguh dan Gemilang". This service activity applies two methods, namely the expository method and the demo method. In this activity, participants were given material about the dangers of stunting, the causes and ways to prevent stunting. After explaining the material, discussing and asking questions about stunting, participants were given education about the dangers of household waste if it is not managed properly, which is one of the causes of stunting. Socialization activities and food waste management run regularly and according to expectations.

Abstract

This study aims to describe and analyze the symbolic communication that contains the names and forms of culinary offerings in the traditional Bancaan Bayi ceremony for believers in Kediri, and how these symbols are understood by the local religious community in the context of intercultural communication. The study uses a qualitative narrative method, observation, interview, and document analysis techniques. The data consists of the names and representations of culinary offerings, which are treated as cultural signs and communication media both with other humans and symbolic communication with God. The findings show that each type of offering contains symbolic messages regarding prayers, hopes, and salvation values that are negotiated through the process of ritual communication. Through Barthes's semiotic perspective, offerings function not only as cultural symbols but also as a form of spiritual and social communication that allows for the exchange of meaning between people from different religious backgrounds. Thus, Bancaan Bayi becomes an arena for intercultural communication that reproduces social harmony through culinary symbolism. This research has implications for supporting interfaith inclusion, thereby encouraging social sustainability and cohesion among community groups.

Abstract

This study explores techniques for determining the next speaker in informal conversations involving Javanese and Japanese-speaking adolescents. The focus of the study is on the techniques used by these speakers to determine the next speaker. The dataset was obtained through observation of informal conversations between Javanese and Japanese-speaking adolescents. The collected data was then analysed using conversation analysis by looking at the practice of using strategies to determine the next speaker, both verbal and non-verbal. The results show that name greetings and eye contact gestures are used as effective techniques to deal with the issue of orientation regarding who will be the next speaker. These findings offer a dimension for describing similarities and specific techniques in the diversity and commonalities of cross-linguistic and cross-cultural conversations.

Abstract

This study analyses the language style in the lyrics of traditional Javanese children’s songs (tembang dolanan) and Japanese children’s songs (warabe uta) through contrastive analysis from an ethnostylistic perspective. This study aims to describe the forms of language style used and to reveal their similarities and differences based on their cultural backgrounds. The study used a qualitative method using content analysis by contrasting Javanese and Japanese children’s song lyrics. Data were collected through document analysis of song lyrics, supported by interviews with instructors from Japan and experts in the Javanese language. The data, validated through source triangulation and strengthened by Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), were analysed using James P. Spradley’s ethnographic stages, including domain, taxonomic, componential, and cultural theme analysis. The findings indicate that language style in both Javanese and Japanese children’s song lyrics is constructed through rhyme, repetition, lexical choices related to nature, animals, and plants, as well as the use of figurative language (metaphor, personification, hyperbole, and simile) and symbolism. These stylistic choices collectively support the construction of meaning and the transmission of educational values within their respective cultural contexts. Therefore, this study contributes to the development of contrastive linguistic analysis by demonstrating that such analysis can extend beyond structural comparison to integrate specific analytical perspectives, such as ethnostylistics. In addition, it offers insights into the exploration of stylistic language use in creative texts, particularly song lyrics, which may serve as alternative media for character education in children. Future research is recommended to expand the corpus by including a wider range of children’s songs across cultures and to examine their implementation in deeper learning contexts involving culturally based creative texts.

Abstract

This study examines how hierarchical values are expressed and maintained through language in both Javanese and Japanese societies. Its goal is to explore the role of language in articulating and reinforcing social stratification in two different cultural settings. Using a comparative ethnographic approach, the study examines how these linguistic systems function within their respective socio-cultural contexts. The results show that both languages employ language codes heavily influenced by factors such as age, social status, and proximity between individuals. This linguistic practice not only functions as a marker of politeness but also as a tool to manage power dynamics and uphold traditional norms. The discussion highlights how language choices serve as mechanisms for asserting social standing and shaping identities within hierarchical structures. In conclusion, this article demonstrates that understanding language practices provides valuable information about cultural concepts, emphasizing respect and obedience within social hierarchies. It also advocates for further cross-cultural research to deepen the understanding of how language reflects and influences social hierarchies.
