Abstract

The nature of student-teacher interaction is often influenced by the teachers’ actions and utterances. In fact, student-teacher interaction could be felt like either threatening or enjoyable. Teachers’ politeness will result in enjoyable student-teacher interaction. Very few studies about politeness on the teachers’ gender perspectives have been conducted. Therefore, this study is aimed to investigate the kinds of politeness strategies used by male and female teachers in powering EFL classroom, and to elaborate how the power of politeness strategies run the EFL student-teacher interaction. The participants are several teachers and students who conduct the English Intensive Course Program in an undergraduate university. Many students-teacher interactions using English are found in those course program, since the courses require the classroom participants to communicate in English. This research followed qualitative research design and used observation to collect data. Applying Brown and Levinson’s theory of politeness, the results show that politeness strategies bring a lively and friendly atmosphere during the classroom interaction. Specifically for female teachers who mostly use positive politeness strategy, they build more interaction with the student rather male teachers. Positive politeness strategy focused on the students’ positive face by expressing the number of utterances that want to be listened to by the students. It keeps students to have willingness to communicate so that the student-teacher interaction in EFL classroom can be maximized.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi keberadaan bahasa-bahasa lokal di ruang publik area wisata Kota Manokwari dalam kerangka studi lanskap linguistik, Papua Barat. Seiring dengan perkembangan modernitas dan peningkatan sektor pariwisata, penggunaan bahasa di ruang publik mengalami perubahan yang signifikan. Studi ini berfokus pada distribusi bahasa di berbagai media publik seperti papan nama, spanduk, dan tanda peringatan untuk memahami kontestasi antara bahasa lokal (Hatam), bahasa nasional (Bahasa Indonesia), dan bahasa global (Bahasa Inggris). Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan observasi partisipatif dan dokumentasi fotografi, penelitian ini menemukan bahwa Bahasa Indonesia mendominasi lanskap linguistik di area wisata, sementara Bahasa Hatam cenderung terpinggirkan dan hanya bertahan dalam konteks tertentu seperti tanda peringatan atau larangan. Bahasa Inggris mulai muncul dalam beberapa elemen informasi wisata, menunjukkan adanya pengaruh globalisasi dalam sektor pariwisata. Hasil penelitian ini mengindikasikan bahwa bahasa memiliki peran penting dalam menegaskan identitas budaya suatu daerah. Namun, keberlangsungan Bahasa Hatam di Manokwari menghadapi tantangan besar karena dominasi Bahasa Indonesia dan meningkatnya penggunaan Bahasa Inggris. Untuk menjaga eksistensi bahasa lokal, diperlukan kebijakan strategis dalam pelestarian bahasa, termasuk peningkatan visibilitas Bahasa Hatam di ruang publik wisata.

Abstract

This study maps the risk of interethnic conflict in Manokwari Regency by focusing on the historical context of conflicts, ethnic distribution, and the understanding of multicultural politeness. A mixed-methods approach was employed through surveys conducted in nine districts and interviews with key informants. Quantitative data were processed using weighted mean scores to produce composite indices per district, categorized into low, medium, and high-risk levels. Findings reveal three clusters: high-risk (West Manokwari, Masni, and North Manokwari), medium-risk (Warmare, South Manokwari, and Prafi), and low-risk (East Manokwari, Tanah Rubuh, and Sidey). Key driving factors include historical legacies of conflict, spatial polarization, and weak interethnic communication. Policy implications emphasize strengthening cross-cultural interaction, designing inclusive public spaces, and providing multicultural communication ethics training for conflict prevention.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the use of politeness strategies in male and female teachers’ classrooms. Since the nature of student-teacher interaction was often influenced by the teachers’ actions and utterances, it was necessary to investigate the politeness based on the teachers’ gender perspectives, where those interactions could sometimes be felt as eitherthreatening or enjoyable. Investigating how male and female teachers’ politeness resulted in enjoyable student-teacher interaction differently, to empower the EFL classroom, this study also elaborated how the power of politeness strategies maximizes the EFL student-teacher interaction. Abstract

Penelitian ini mengkaji tantangan dan manfaat penggunaan English Medium Instruction (EMI) dalam pembelajaran English as a Foreign Language (EFL) di dua SMA negeri di Kota Manokwari, Papua Barat. Penelitian menggunakan desain studi kasus kualitatif dengan melibatkan 10 guru bahasa Inggris dan 50 siswa kelas XI. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara, observasi kelas, dan analisis dokumen, kemudian dianalisis secara tematik. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa implementasi EMI menghadapi kendala linguistik, keterbatasan infrastruktur, dan faktor sosial-budaya. Meskipun demikian, EMI memberikan manfaat berupa peningkatan kepercayaan diri siswa dalam berbicara, motivasi belajar, dan keterampilan berpikir kritis. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa EMI berpotensi efektif di konteks EFL terpencil apabila diterapkan secara fleksibel dan disesuaikan dengan konteks lokal.
