Abstract

Project-based learning is a valuable instructional approach that can promote the simultaneous development of language, content, and skills in academic EFL classrooms. By enabling students to engage in real-world projects, this approach not only transforms the dynamics of the classroom but also empowers learners to take ownership of their learning experiences, ultimately fostering higher levels of academic literacy and critical thinking skills in language acquisition. This study explored the impact of project-based learning on language skills and academic performance in ESL classrooms. The researchers used a combination of classroom observations, student surveys, and work sample analysis. The findings show that project-based learning significantly improved students' language proficiency, critical thinking, and engagement. Students reported being more motivated and having a deeper understanding of the language, as they could apply their knowledge to real-world situations.

Abstract

This study is aimed to find the kinds of code mixing and to know which kinds of code mixing are dominantly used in Bukan Empat Mata Program on TRANS 7 Television channel. Descriptive qualitative method is used in this study. The data were collected through watching, recording, transferring, playing, selecting and transcribing the data from the conversations between the presenters and the guest stars. The collected data were then analyzed through identifying the data, selecting the data related to the code mixing, listing and classifying the data based on the kinds of code mixing and finally drawing conclusion. It was found that there are two kinds of code mixing used by prersenters and guest stars in Bukan Empat Mata program, namely situational and conversational code mixing. Between two kinds of code mixing, conversational code mixing is dominantly used both by presenters and the guest stars in which they sometimes change the pronunciation from English into Indonesian in the conversation.

Abstract

This research examines the effectiveness of AI-based speech recognition technology in fostering English pronunciation skills among students. The study emphasizes the importance of pronunciation proficiency as a cornerstone of language learning and its impact on overall communication effectiveness. A quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group methodology was employed. The participants were 58 third-year Accounting Diploma students from State Polytechnic of Malang, Indonesia. They were divided into two groups: an experimental class utilizing the Google Read Along application and a control class receiving conventional teaching methods. The results demonstrate a significant improvement in pronunciation skills within the experimental group. These students achieved an average N-Gain score of 0.7646, categorized as "high," compared to the control group's average score of 0.6564, classified as "moderate." Furthermore, a t-test analysis revealed a statistically significant difference between the two groups, with a p-value (2-tailed) of 0.000. These findings strongly suggest that AI-based speech recognition technology offers a more effective approach to enhancing English pronunciation compared to conventional methods. This research paves the way for integrating this technology into language learning curriculums. The potential for significant positive impacts on student pronunciation skills is promising and warrants further exploration in future research endeavors.

Abstract

In the continuously evolving digital era, mastering English in a professional context has become a primary necessity, especially for accounting students who are required to understand technical terminology and effectively communicate financial information. This research aims to explore the effectiveness of artificial intelligence tools in enhancing the teaching of English for Accounting, specifically within the framework of English for Specific Purposes education. Utilizing a quasi-experimental design, the study incorporates a pretest and posttest control group, comprising two distinct groups of accounting students. One group receives conventional instruction, while the other benefits from AI-enhanced teaching methods. The findings suggest that the group that participated in the experiment showed notable enhancements in their knowledge of technical terms, ability to comprehend financial documents, and proficiency in both writing and communication related to accounting when compared to the group that did not participate. Additionally, the use of AI proved to help reduce cognitive load and enhance learning motivation among students. These findings imply the need for systematic integration of artificial intelligence technology into the ESP curriculum, as well as training for instructors to optimize its use. Thus, AI technology plays not only a supportive role but also serves as an adaptive learning strategy relevant to current industry needs.

Abstract

Promoting interactive and engaging learning remains a major challenge, particularly in the design and development of instructional media that can serve as a virtual instructor for accounting students. To address this challenge, the present study introduces the development of a virtual teaching assistant specifically designed for accounting courses, with a focus on the inventory topic. The virtual assistant delivers guided instruction in audio format by utilizing Google’s text-to-speech technology, aiming to enhance students’ comprehension and engagement during learning activities and assessments. The integration of text-to-speech into inventory learning media represents the novelty of this research. Accordingly, the system named Interactive Learning Media of Inventory (ILMI) was developed through a structured process consisting of needs analysis, system design, implementation, user testing, and maintenance. Finally, the system was evaluated and achieved a SUS score of 79, indicating a high level of usability based on respondent feedback.
