Abstract

Strengthening competitiveness is an important factor in facing the growth of international trade in commodity markets, especially for maize as feed commodities. This research aims to: (1) analyze the level of profit and competitiveness of maize farming, (2) investigate farming components affecting competitiveness, and (3) analyze sensitivity level of profit and competitiveness towards the changes. Data were processed using PAM (Policy Analysis Matrix) and sensitivity analysis. The research was conducted on March- May 2018 in Pacitan with 102 maize farmers as sample respondents, collected proportionally. Sensitivity analysis observed four changes, i.e; increase of purchase price, the structure of labor, optimization of maize productivity, and weakening of rupiah exchange rate. Research findings indicated that (1) maize farming in Pacitan does not generate either financial or economic profits, as well as competitiveness, as shown by PCR and DRCR accounting for 1,033 and 1,024 respectively; (2) the component influencing competitive advantages is purchase price and component influencing comparative advantages is rupiah exchange rate; components simultaneously influencing both advantages are structure of labor and maize productivity; (3) the sensitivity analysis proves that the changes of profit are elastic towards the changes of four components indicated by elasticity indicator with a value of more than one. The changes of competitiveness are elastic only for purchase price, but for other components they are inelastic.

Abstract

Yellow maize for animal feed is one of potential strategic commodities to be developed in Pacitan Regency, as a marginal area. The focusing question is whether this commodity generates competitiveness. This research aims: 1) to determine the private and social profitability, 2) to analyze competitiveness through comparative and competitive advantages, 3) to discuss effects of government policies on maize farming system. Data were analyzed by using the Policy Analysis Matrix (PAM) method. A sampling area was purposively selected, i.e. Pacitan Regency, while 102 maize farmers were proportionally selected as respondents. The research covers three seasons: rainy season I, rainy season II, and dry season. The result of analysis shows that in the rainy season II, maize farming in Pacitan generates private and social profits and competitiveness as indicated by the Private Cost Ratio (PCR) and the Domestic Resource Cost Ratio (DRCR) of less than one. The maize farming in the rainy season I and the dry season does not generate either profit or competitiveness. In general, the level of government protection of agricultural outputs is considered low but the protection of both tradable and non-tradable agricultural inputs is high. The government policy on agricultural outputs and inputs simultaneously does not protect maize farming effectively.

Abstract

Grape vines are cultivated in South Tangerang City, not only by farmers, but also by members of a grape community. This research aimed 1) to describe the characteristics of grape farmers, 2) to show the perspective of grapes farmer, and 3) to identify problems and expectations in carrying out grape vines cultivation in South Tangerang City. Data collected through the interview, observation and sharing questionnaires. The number of samples was determined proportionally to 68 grape farmers, who are members of the grape community in South Tangerang City (KAT). The results showed that grape farmers tended to be knowledgeable and educated, specified by productive age (20-40 years old) with less experiences in grape cultivation. Based on the perspective analysis, farmers were attracted to grape farming not because of the influence of farm-families background, but because of hobbies and self interest in grapes cultivation. Farmers considered that agriculture was a noble and a matter of pride. The most common problems facing grape farmers were the insufficient land, inadequate agricultural funding base, and formulating the ideal growing media. The results of the expectation analysis proved that training program was the most desired assistance for farmers, especially effort to increase grape productivity.

Abstract

The demand for red chilies grows yearly, in tandem with the increase in population or industries that use red chili as raw resources. This research aims to examine the effect of the determiner of chili demand in Indonesia and categorize them as substitutes or complementary goods. This research employs a quantitative descriptive design with secondary data analysis from the Central Bureau of Statistics. The variables studied were the average prices of red chilies, cayennes pepper, tomatoes, shallots, and garlic in Indonesia from 2010 to 2020. Cayenne pepper, tomato, garlic, and garlic prices significantly affect the 1% level, whereas the population does not affect red chili demand. The analytical tool used is the Cobb-Douglas model regression and elasticity analysis. The result shows that the impact of cayenne pepper, tomato, and garlic prices is directly proportional to the demand for red chilies. On the other hand, shallots significantly have an inverse impact on the demand for chilies. The high price of cayenne pepper, the cost of tomatoes, also the price of garlic will increase the demand for red chili, while the high price of shallots will reduce the need for red chili. According to price elasticity analysis, the cost of red chili is elastic to the demand for red chili in Indonesia. Cross-elasticity analysis shows that cayennes pepper, tomatoes, and garlic are substitutes, while shallots are complementary goods to red chilies.

Abstract

The Aglaonema plant is extensively traded in the Depok region and has already been promoted through various social media platforms. The primary objective of this community service initiative is to impart knowledge to farmers regarding utilizing live features on the Shopee e-commerce platform. The partners are farmers affiliated with the Aglaonema Nusantara Association, located in Depok. The programmes were conducted in August 2023 in Pasir Putih, Sawangan. The selected approaches encompassed counseling, mentoring, and practice. Practical application and support are facilitated by a team of students who create a seller account and conduct a live demonstration on the Shopee platform. Success indicators could be observed through several means, such as output analysis, pre-test and post-test assessments, and measurement of partner satisfaction. The activity mentioned above yielded several outcomes, including establishing a Shopee seller account, a notable improvement in participants' knowledge by up to 22%, and generating a partner evaluation sheet with a satisfaction score of 4.7 out of 5, denoting a high level of satisfaction. This action was effectively executed under established protocols. Nevertheless, it is imperative to sustain this endeavour to facilitate broader adoption of technology among farmers and enhance their ability to promote and sell their agricultural product effectively.

Abstract

Despite its well-run production and marketing in Indonesia, the development strategies of banana produce are in need of comprehensive scientific study. This present study aims to analyze the production and marketing prospects of Indonesian bananas. We employed the available data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (Badan Pusat Statistik) from 2017-2021. The obtained data for production prospects was analyzed through a descriptive analysis by compiling the numbers of production, productive crops, and productivity of bananas. Meanwhile, the marketing prospects were analyzed based on data on consumption, export volume and value, import volume and value, and exports and imports of banana flour. The results showed that the prospects for banana production in Indonesia are promising; however, the production development is in need of support from more planting areas to boost productivity. Marketing expansion into the importing-countries, such as Europe, the US, China, Russia, and Japan is facilitated through the export of fresh bananas. Our findings suggest that the marketing prospects can be increased through the support from banana processing industry. Furthermore, the opportunity for market expansion of processed banana products remains viable in both domestic and international markets, particularly when considering banana flour as a potential product.

Abstract

Abstract

Aglaonema plants (Aglaonema spp.) are popular ornamental plants that are famous for the beauty and diversity of their leaves. However, pest attacks can disrupt the growth and beauty of this plant. An alternative to controlling pests is to use vegetable pesticides. This research aims to test the effectiveness of organic pesticides derived from bintaro fruit extract and the effect of using banana peels as a leaf polish on Aglaonema plants. Bintaro is a potential source of botanical pesticides because it contains compounds that inhibit insect feeding. On the other hand, banana peels, which are often overlooked, actually have the ability to naturally enrich the leaves because of their nutritional content. This research used a randomized block design (RAK) with six different treatments, including a control without treatment and chemical pesticide treatment as a comparison. The results of the study showed that bintaro fruit extract had no real effect on aglaonema pest attacks, P4 treatment had a real effect, with the highest number of respondents, but P3 treatment tended to give a duller leaf shine. These results show that the use of the botanical pesticide Bintaro fruit extract did not have a significant effect in killing Aglonema pests, but P2 and P3 treatments had a better effect than other treatments in dealing with pests and P4 treatment was the best in shining Aglonema leaves.
