Abstract

Kata Kunci: Air, Kelimpahan Mikoroplastik, Perairan Belawan, Tipe Mikroplastik, Warna MikroplastikABSTRACTThis study aims to analyse the abundance of microplastics and identify the types and colours of microplastics in the waters of Belawan, North Sumatra province. Surface water samples at a depth of ±20 cm (500 mL/repetition) were collected simply at three observation stations and filtered using a plankton net. The laboratory analysis procedure included: 1) multi-stage filtration using 5 mm and 300 µm sieves, 2) destruction of organic material using 30% H₂O₂, 3) density separation using 30% NaCl solution, 4) final filtration of water samples using Whatman No. 42, and 5) identification using a binocular microscope with 10× magnification. The highest concentration of microplastics was found at station 1 at coordinates 3°47'26.268″N 98°40'45"E with an average abundance of 110 ± 16.37 particles/L, followed by station 2 at coordinates 3°47'29.484″N 98 °40′57.486″E with an average abundance of 90.67 ± 14.74 particles/L, and the lowest average abundance of 55.33 ± 17 particles/L at station 3 at coordinates 3°47'16.686″N 98°40'56.682″E. Regarding the types found, fibre was the dominant type (33-50%), followed by fragments (28-48%), film (12-16%), foam (3-7%), and the least common type, pellets (3-5%). The most common colour distribution was transparent (15-33%), followed by blue (15-28%), red (13-19%), black (9-16%), white (7-9%), grey (0-6%), green (4-7%), orange (0-4%), yellow (2-4%), brown (1-6%), and the least common colour purple (0-1%). This indicates that pollution in this area originates from waste input from the Medan City Watershed (DAS) trapped at the estuary, domestic and household waste discharge, and maritime activities directly into the water. The high level of microplastic contamination requires integrated and sustainable waste management policy interventions from the local government. Keywords: Water, Microplastic Abundance, Belawan Estuary, Microplastic Types, Microplastic Colors

Abstract

Poncan Gadang Island is one of the islands in Sibolga City. The island is utilized by the community for various activities, such as beach tourism, underwater tourism and capture fisheries. This study aims to assess the coral reef condition of Poncan Gadang Island and provide recommendations for its management efforts. The research was conducted in February 2023 using the Underwater Photo Transect method to assess coral cover. The Underwater Photo Transect method was selected for its ability to provide permanent photographic records for further analysis, comparison over time and efficiency in capturing large- scale coral conditions. Management recommendations were analyzed using the SWOT analysis method. SWOT analysis was selected because provided a structured framework for management decision-making. The results indicated that the average percentage of live coral cover was 24.01%, classifying the coral reefs as damaged condition. This degradation is likely influenced by anthropogenic activities and environmental stressors. Based on the SWOT analysis, it is recommended that Poncan Gadang Island’s management address internal weakness to mitigate external threats. The SWOT analysis shows that management efforts should focus on addressing internal weaknesses, such as inadequate of local awareness and conservation policies to counteract external threats like unsustainable tourism practices and climate change. Implementing stricter tourism regulations, community- based conservation efforts and coral reef restoration for enhance reef resilience.

Abstract

The main problem of waste management in Penyengat Island is the increasing population growth and increasing volume of waste and limited land so that it is difficult to carry out waste management using the final waste treatment site because it has a large potential for pollution. The low level of public awareness in managing household waste is caused by the community's social, economic, and cultural conditions. This study designs Model of the Importance of Socio-Cultural in Waste Management on Penyengat Island. This research method is an analytical survey with a cross-sectional design, the community subjects who live in Penyengat Island with a sample size of 270 people, taken by random sampling. Data analysis using chi-square test and logistic regression. Logical regression equation model in (p/(1-p)) - 1,614 + 0,505 (place of residence) + 0.642 (local wisdom). Waste management needs cultural values that already exist and should be maintained as part of one's identity and efforts to maintain the balance of nature and the environment. It is also necessary to conduct a policy study regarding the island's waste management program with a socio-cultural value approach.

Abstract

This Focus Group Discussion (FGD) aims to identify strategies for optimizing corn chips (emping jagung) production through the implementation of innovative equipment technology in Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Bekiung Village, Langkat Regency. Bekiung Village is known as an agricultural area with abundant corn production, where corn is processed into emping jagung as a local snack product. However, the processing activities are still conducted manually, which limits production capacity and efficiency and becomes an obstacle in supporting the agricultural sector that remains the main economic pillar of the village. Through the FGD involving community members, village authorities, and the Village-Owned Enterprise (BUMDes) Bangun Mandiri Bekiung, various issues related to production constraints and technology needs were discussed. As a result, the implementation of innovative equipment technology was introduced as a practical solution to improve the efficiency and quality of corn processing. The program includes socialization on the benefits of corn processing, training on transforming corn into economically valuable products, provision of appropriate technology equipment to assist production, as well as continuous mentoring and evaluation to maintain product quality and market competitiveness. The results of the FGD indicate an increase in community understanding of technology utilization, stronger collaboration between stakeholders, and the development of a sustainable production improvement strategy. Therefore, the integration of community participation through FGD and the application of innovative equipment technology represents an effective approach to enhance productivity, strengthen rural economic resilience, and support the sustainable development of MSMEs in Bekiung Village.
