Abstract

This study aims to know the change in mathematical beliefs of students grade VII from elementary school until now in Junior High School through students’ mathematical autobiography. The research design used in this study is qualitative descriptive. The data were obtained by using questionnaires and interviews. Instruments in this study are researchers as the main instrument, questionnaire about the identity of participants and 20 items of related statements about students' beliefs in mathematics, as well as interview guides as supporting instruments. The statement in the questionnaire is divided into 10 positive statements and 10 negative statements related to mathematics. The results of this study showed that firstly, almost all students, both male, and female, have a decline of beliefs in mathematics learning at the junior high school level. Second, the factors that affect the decreasing level of students' belief in mathematics during the junior high school are the drastic changes in the subject that becomes more difficult and more formulas to be memorized, and many lessons do not use concrete objects. Further, the teachers' attitudes who are also very different from when they are in elementary school which are more comfortable, their social conditions are changed because they live in dorms that have many activities (must be followed) that makes them busy so that they are difficult to find free time to learn outside the school hours. Third, students' beliefs about mathematics learning have shifted from positive to negative or vice versa.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop a mathematics test instrument that assesses the critical thinking skills of hard-impaired students using a Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach in a colored ribbon context. The research employed a design research method with a development type, consisting of the preliminary and prototyping stages, including self-evaluation, expert review, and one-to-one. The instrument was developed based on Ennis’s (1985) critical thinking indicators, comprising five items adapted to the visual characteristics of Grade XI deaf students at SMALB. Content and language validation by experts confirmed the qualitative validity of the items. A limited trial (one-to-one) involving three hearing-impaired students revealed that the items were understandable and suitable, particularly due to the use of simple language, visual aids, and concrete objects. In conclusion, the critical thinking questions based on the RME approach and visual context are effective for hearing-impaired students and offer an alternative assessment tool that accommodates their sensory limitations. Keywords: critical thinking; hearing-impaired students; realistic mathematics education.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify learning styles that show the highest level of achievement and describe students’ mathematical concept comprehension abilities in circle-related content based on visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles. A total of 9 selected students from a total of 26 high school students participated in interviews, conceptual comprehension ability tests, and questionnaires as part of the qualitative descriptive methodology of this study. Based on the findings, 73.08% of students fell into the middle category, 11.54% into the low category, and 15.38% into the high category. There were 11 students with visual learning styles, including 2 in the low category, 8 students in the middle category, and 1 student in the high category. There were 7 students with auditory learning styles who only showed achievements in 2 categories, namely 5 in the middle category and 2 in the high category. There were 5 students with kinesthetic learning styles, among which 1 was in the low category and 4 in the middle category, with none reaching the high category. Therefore, it can be said that the kinesthetic learning type showed the lowest achievement, while the auditory learning style produced the highest achievement. The findings of this study also support the idea that learning style is not the only factor that influences the understanding of mathematical concepts, other additional factors include motivation, prior knowledge, and the teaching methods used.
