Abstract

White domination in America can make white ideology of beauty spread and influence the African-American society. Toni Morrison’s novels, The Bluest Eye and God Help the Child, depict the influence. This study attemps to uncover the intersecting oppression of race and gender in the novels and to explain how African-American women cope with the oppression. This study is descriptive qualitative research. The data sources are Morrison’s novels The Bluest Eyeand God Help the Child. The study has two findings. Firstly, African-American society experiences oppression as an impact of the white beauty hegemony. The most disadvantageous oppression is the internalization of white beauty values. Holding such values makes African-American women feel inferior and hate their own physical characteristics that are far from the white ideal of beauty. Meanwhile, African-American women who have darker skin colors experience the hardest oppression because they also become the victims of oppression committed by some circles of African-American society, which tend to consider them unequal. It reflects the complexity of oppression experienced by African-American women. Secondly,self-consciousness is the main factor of attempts to release them from the oppression. Without self-consciousness, African-American women can be trapped in values that deteriorate their self-pride of identity. Keywords: intersecting oppression, African-American women, skin color

Abstract

Abstract: Umberto Eco’s novels, The Name of The Rose, Baudolino, and Foucault’s Pendulum, with each specific setting, can help Indonesian readers to understand Europe, particularly in the Middle Ages, a long period in the European history which has various other historical events. Although the works are imaginary, the factual information in the novels can enrich the readers’ knowledge about the situation of Europe in the period of time, including the territorial extent which exceeded the present European territory. The works, in fact, tell aboutthe social group which played significant roles in the history of Europe. For Indonesian readers, it is not easy to understand the novels, let alone the details related to the history of Europe in the Middle Ages, the geographical sites, and the important people who played significant roles in the European history. However, the novels can be used as a medium for learning history, particularly the Medieval Europe. Key Words: history of Europe; novels; setting; learning; Indonesian readers

Abstract

Abstract. Student success is one of key goals of higher education, thus necessary steps are taken to identify how it can be achieved. However, students vary in their ability and performance in completing their studies with various factors attributing to these variations. This study offers identification of the factors within the context of English language program. Examining students’ perception, it attempts to reveal ways in which personal, internal, and external factors and different stages of study may interact to influence student's academic performance. The primary data was a Google Form Questionnaire to 217 students (n=217) of the English literature study program in a state university in Yogyakarta. Through descriptive statistics, the Likert Rating Scale data were analyzed using R. Qualitative data underwent reduction, categorization, and representation using R Qualitative Data Analysis (RQDA). Findings reveal that the Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) satisfied the goodness of fit criterion. The linear regression analysis using the variables from the CFA model revealed that University Learning Facilities, Liking one’s study program, Courses meeting students’ expectations, and Student's Interest in the courses explained 51.31% of the variation (R-squared=0.513) in Students' Academic Performance. However, lecturers negatively impact students’ success, alongside factors like mental health. Further research through in-depth interviews with alumni could establish a more supportive academic system. Keywords: CFA, EFA, student’s academic performance, motivation factors, obstructing factors

Abstract

This study uses a bibliometric approach to analyze the rising trend of ecocriticism research over the past decade. A total of 314 articles were selected based on the keyword ecocriticism from the arts and humanities fields indexed in Scopus between 2014—2014. The study employs bibliometric analysis with the assistance of VOSViewer to reveal patterns and trends in ecocriticism research. The findings are as follows: ecocriticism studies have steadily increased from 2014 to 2024, with a significant surge observed in 2023. Green Letters and CLCWeb were identified as the primary journals publishing ecocriticism-related research. The most productive authors are Dellacasa, Raihanah, and Wardani. The year 2021 recorded the highest scientific impact (h-index 5; g-index 9), while 2022 stood out with the highest number of citations (75 citations across 23 articles), with the most cited article being Arafah et al. (2021), titled Saving the Environment: Environmental Lessons in Colin Thiele’s February Dragon. Geographically, the United Kingdom dominated publication output, whereas Indonesia recorded the highest citation count. The most frequently emerging themes include climate change, environmental degradation, anthropocentrism, ecocentrism, biocentrism, and ecofeminism. This bibliometric analysis also highlights the potential of ecocriticism, an interdisciplinary approach to fostering environmental awareness and informing public policy.

Abstract

Abstract

This article is about a research aimed at finding the forms of Williams'desire which is unfulfilled or repressed into his unconscious mind as sublimated inhis play, A Streetcar Named Desire. In other words, Williams' main inventedcharacters, Blanche and Stanley, whose personalities are shaky or chaotic, represent the expression of the playwright's unbalanced personality which issublimated in the play. The research is conducted by tracing Williams' life and understanding theplay A Streetcar Named Desire as well as the criticism on it and his other works ofwhich the aspects are comparable. To come to the desired aim, psychoanalyticcriticism is aptly opted to expose the issue. In relation to the various schools ofpsychoanalysis, the research applies Freud's psychoanalytic perspective, focusingon the relationship between the author and his work. The research results show the following. Firstly, A Streetcar NamedDesire was written on the basis of Williams' life, especially his childhood andyouth, in which he experienced unhappy and inharmonious relationship with hisfather and, as a consequence, it made his personality chaotic or unbalanced, whichthen brought about sexual perversion in him, making him a passive homosexual.Secondly, the perverted sexual behavior of his was as a matter of fact themanifestation of his rebellion against his father, which he then expressed throughhis work. Thirdly, such behavior was inappropriate in the American cultural andsocial life during his life span and, therefore, he had to repress his desire because itwas impossible for him to release his libidinous drive so that, to avoid neurosis, hesublimated it in literature. In other words, A Streetcar Named Desire is thesublimation of Williams' repressed libido to express his rebellion against his fatherand to release his libidinous drive. In that case, he creates Stanley and Blanche ashis fantasy to escape from his repression though only a minute's escape.Key words: Tennessee Williams, childhood, chaotic personality, libido, father, repression, neurosis, sublimation, Blanche, Stanley

Abstract

Background: The demand for professionalism at work obliges librarians to have skills, not only related to library management but also foreign language mastery, especially English as an international language. One of library programs that need language mastery is library guiding service or library tours, which provides services by guiding library guests including those from foreign countries. To succeed the program, English mastery is undeniably useful to communicate with foreigners. Thus, the English Literature Study Program UNY conducted a community service program to improve the librarians’ English skills to serve international guests, which in itself will improve their quality, both locally and internationally. Methods: Workshop by providing several materials, namely Dealing with Guests, Giving Direction, Giving Information on Collections and Services, and role play which showcased the English language skills of the participants. Results: High score of the participants’ satisfaction related to the topic of workshop, materials, teaching method, communication, media, punctuality, and benefits, shows the relevance between the participants’ needs and the PKM team. Conclusions: Based on the evaluation results, the participants hoped that similar activities could be carried out regularly because the participants could feel the benefits directly.
