Abstract

Mathematics is one of the essential subjects for developing a national economy. It is the fourth element of the STEM acronym. Therefore, teachers’ abilities need to be enhanced for the learning process to be effective. However, the majority of mathematics teachers in developing countries still have difficulty in obtaining professional development. The present study aims to identify the targets of mathematics teachers’ professional development (MTPD) and examines its prominence in the literature over the past five years. It takes the form of a systematic review. The first objective is realized through the use of a qualitative, deductive, and thematic approach. The second objective is realized using the VOSviewer software tool (version 1.6.15.0). The 28 articles identified in the study were sourced from the Scopus database and published between 2016 and 2020. The results show that MTPD focuses on the implementation of technology, inquiry-based learning, problem-solving, and contextual (real-world) problems in the teaching and learning (T&L) process. The term was most often related to “mathematics,” “professional development,” “study,” and “teacher.” The results of the network visualization analysis of MTPD incorporate (a) professional development-teacher; (b) professional development-mathematics; (c) professional development-learning; and (d) professional development-mathematics teacher. The results of the study have implications for teachers trying to implement a T&L strategy that actively involves students in solving mathematical problems. It is recommended that future researchers identify MTPD in reference to (a) age; (b) gender; (c) the duration of teaching, (d) teaching location (urban and rural), and (e) the need to use more databases.

Abstract

Detecting whether with tools based on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is one of the tools that can be used to determine prayer times for people who are in small (backward) villages. The objective of this study is to facilitate the people of Situpete village to determine prayer times through science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). This research method uses qualitative involving five people. The data and data sources used are in-depth interviews and observations. The results of the interview are analyzed with these techniques. The results of this study found that with assembly using PVC pipes, Coaxial cables type RG58, Terminal Blocks, PCB boards, Sound Cards, RPI, and LCD the community became educated in determining the time of prayer through STEM-based weather detection tools. Not only that, but the community can also use the tool themselves to determine the time of prayer according to weather conditions in the Kampung Situpete environment. Educational themes felt by the community such as (1) the need for equipment, (2) accessibility, and (3) technological knowledge. Implication: the integration of STEM learning is very important to be carried out in schools to educate the public in meeting their daily needs. Teachers (academic circles) need to emphasize that STEM science is not only studied as a theory but is important to apply in real life. Future studies should use simpler tools at a lower cost and use more study participants.

Abstract

Social interaction based on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is one of the steps in building communication for each individual in facing the 4.0 era. Every student is required to have various skills, especially in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The objective of this study is to find out how the influence of STEM-based social interaction models in building communication for residents of the Azka Azkiya orphanage in the Bogor Region. The method in the study used a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest with nonequivalent groups and corroborated by the results of the interview. The respondents involved in the experiment were 24 students and in-depth interviews with two junior high school students. The result, based on the results of data analysis using independent t-test samples, found a value of t = -5.98; p < 0.05, meaning that there is an influence of STEM-based interaction models in improving students' communication skills. When the results of the thematic analysis were found, four themes showed good interaction with stem approaches, namely (1) interaction between students, (2) interaction between students-teachers, (3) interaction between student-content, and (4) interaction between student-environment. In conclusion, STEM-based learning processes can build student interaction and communication in their lives properly. In addition, it encourages students and teachers to be literate in science, technology, and engineering literacy in the face of the times. This research implies that STEM education needs to be included and made by education practitioners, namely teachers, and especially by the ministry of education into the curriculum in force in Indonesia. Future studies are necessary to conduct more samples from various regions in Indonesia to see the importance of STEM-based education is important to implement.
