Abstract

This study investigated the role of ESG disclosure in moderating the relationship between growth opportunities, financial constraints, and corporate investment decisions. While growth opportunities usually encourage firms to invest more, financial constraints often limit their capability to do so. ESG performance, reflecting a company’s commitment to sustainable and responsible practices, influences how firms navigate these two conflicting forces. 174 firm-year observations of publicly listed manufacturing companies in Indonesia from 2017–2023 were analyzed and processed using the Least Squares Dummy Variable (LSDV) estimator, clustered by year, in Stata 19. The results showed that ESG disclosure significantly moderated the relationship between financial constraints and investment decisions, but did not moderate the relationship between growth opportunities and investment decisions.  The result suggests that manufacturing firms should adopt more ESG practices to improve access to financing and make better investment decisions.

Abstract

The increasing competition within the fast fashion industry has heightened the importance of customer loyalty, as it directly contributes to a company’s profitability. One way to foster customer loyalty is by delivering high–quality service through both online and offline channels. Previous studies have shown that customer satisfaction can mediate the relationship between offline service quality and customer loyalty. Building on this, the present study incorporates the online service quality to examine whether customer satisfaction mediates the relationship between both online and offline service quality and customer loyalty. This research focuses on customers of Uniqlo Indonesia and the data were collected via online questionnaires distributed through social media platforms, yielding 74 valid responses. The data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The results indicate that customer satisfaction fully mediates the relationship between offline service quality and customer loyalty, however, in the case of online service quality, customer satisfaction does not mediate the relationship, suggesting a direct effect between online service quality and customer loyalty.

Abstract

Background: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has become a strategic tool for companies in controversial industries to enhance their public image. Indonesian cigarette manufacturers frequently engage in CSR initiatives, raising public scrutiny over whether these actions are genuine or reputation-driven. Understanding how the public evaluates these initiatives is therefore important. Unlike prior studies that treat CSR as a single construct, this research compares the effects of various CSR types and examines the mediating role of skepticism towards CSR in a controversial industry in Indonesia. Purpose: This research aims to examine the effect of different CSR initiatives (health, environment, sports, and education) on public skepticism, and how skepticism, in turn, affects company evaluation. Method: An experimental study was conducted with 144 participants randomly assigned to one of four CSR initiatives. Participants received information about Rokoqu, a hypothetical cigarette company, its CSR initiatives, and tobacco-related health risks. Data were analyzed using mediated regression analysis with SPSS and PROCESS Macro. Findings: Skepticism towards CSR affected company evaluation negatively. However, CSR types did not significantly influence skepticism, indicating no mediating effect. Health- and education-related CSR did not differ significantly in influencing company evaluation, while environment- and sports-related CSR resulted in significantly lower evaluations than health-related CSR. Conclusions: While CSR types do not trigger skepticism, they affect company evaluation differently. Environment- and sports-related CSR influence company evaluation more negatively than health and education-related CSR. Research implication: CSR programs may backfire for companies in controversial industries, especially if the initiatives are misaligned with their reputation and public expectations.
