Abstract

This article examines the response of the Tablighi Jamaat to the COVID-19 pandemic through the lens of living hadith. This study adopts a qualitative research design to explore and analyze the response of the Tablighi Jamaat to the COVID-19 pandemic from a theological and practical perspective, grounded in the concept of living hadith. The data for this study is collected through some methods: interview, participant observation, and document analysis. There are several findings in this research. First, the Tablighi Jamaat is an Islamic movement that frequently draws on hadith as a foundational reference in its activities, seeking to implement these teachings in everyday life. The movement generally does not engage in discussions concerning the authenticity of hadith and actively avoids theological debates. Second, the diverse responses of Tablighi Jamaat members to the COVID-19 pandemic are deeply influenced by their theological beliefs. These beliefs are shaped by their interpretations and understandings of religious texts. Members interpret these texts in a literal/textual manner, particularly hadiths related to tho’un (plague or contagious diseases). Third, for some members of the Tablighi Jamaat, the hadiths concerning tho’un are perceived solely as warnings and trials from Allah, without reference to scientific perspectives, nor do they align with the implementation of public health protocols.

Abstract

This article examines the historiography of Islamic leadership from the perspective of Fred M. Donner and its relevance to Islamic education. Through his works, Donner offers a new perspective that significantly contributes to Islamic studies in general, as well as to the study of Islamic civilization and education, particularly in understanding the historiography of Islamic leadership. This study employs a library research approach with a historical perspective. The data collection method used is documentation, which involves reviewing and analyzing various primary and secondary sources related to Fred M. Donner’s thoughts on the historiography of Islamic leadership and its relevance to Islamic education. The findings reveal that Donner employs four main approaches in studying early Islamic history: the descriptive approach, source-critical approach, tradition criticism, and skeptical approach. Furthermore, according to Donner, there are five historiographical themes concerning leadership in Islam: the fitna (civil strife), sirah al-khulafa (biographies of the caliphs), Pre-Islamic Arabia, Pre-Islamic Iran, and riddah (apostasy wars). Donner’s historiographical approach exhibits several key characteristics that make it relevant to Islamic education: the importance of critical engagement with Islamic historical sources, the necessity of an interdisciplinary approach in Islamic studies, and the need to reconstruct the understanding of Islamic leadership.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the strategic role of educators in instilling anti-corruption values. It employs a library research method, in which data were gathered through the analysis of various scholarly sources, including journals, books, and other relevant documents concerning the role of educators in anti-corruption education. The findings reveal that educators are not merely responsible for transmitting scientific knowledge, but also for internalizing moral values such as honesty, transparency, responsibility, justice, and social concern through exemplary conduct, contextual learning, and a supportive educational environment. The early and systematic inculcation of anti-corruption values is a long-term preventive measure for fostering a deeply rooted anti-corruption culture within national life. The success of anti-corruption education is highly dependent on the capacity, integrity, and commitment of educators in designing and implementing effective, participatory, and value-based learning strategies. In a multicultural society such as Indonesia, a “glocal (global-local)” approach that integrates universal values with local wisdom can enhance the relevance and effectiveness of anti-corruption education. Therefore, synergy among various stakeholders—including educators, educational institutions, government bodies, and the broader community—is essential to strengthen anti-corruption education as an integral component of national character development.

Abstract

The research aims to determine: the philosophical, doctrinal, and sociological foundations behind the da'wah orientation; da'wah strategy; and the transformation of religious prayer Mafia congregations. This qualitative research uses the method of observation, documentation, and interviews. The results showed that: Gus Ali Gondrong with his Mafia Sholawat preferred the Bengali community as the object of his da'wah. Gus Ali Gondrong's da'wah strategy used various media including: physical media, verbal, and amaliah media. Sholawat accompanied by music and Sufi dances, the tausyiah conveyed by Gus Ali was non-judgmental and able to embrace the bengal community. Third, Gus Ali Gondrong's da'wah strategy uses Berger and Luckmann's theoretical framework by using a dialectical process experienced by humans through three momentums, namely: externalization, objectivation, and internalization. The transformation of the congregation is evidenced by changes in attitudes, behavior, and commitment to religious teachings; feel like a better human being, act the right way; as well as a change in the principle of religious life towards a more firm and clear direction. This research can contribute to development of more contextual and effective da'wah theories and strategies in dealing with ignorance, especially in the Javanese context.

Abstract

This article describes the thought and political wisdom of K.H.A. Wahid Hasyim about the relationship between Islam and the state. As one of the founders of the Nation, A. Wahid Hasyim was known as a true nationalist figure. This is among others can be seen from its acceptance of the overall chest to the deletion of the Jakarta Charter and the entire formula that explicitly contains Islam in the opening and body/main text of UUD 1945. Although he was one of the people who persistently proposed Islam as the basis of the country, but in his perspective, the unity of the nation of Indonesia is much more important than formal recognition of Islam. The acceptance of Pancasila and the UUD 1945 by A. Wahid Hasyim (as well as several Islamic figures at the time) signifies that they are willing to sacrifice for the interes of the nation. Keywords: ideologization of Islam, formalization, state, nationalism

Abstract

This article discusses Abdullah Saeed's thought on contextual exegesis of the Quran. The background of Abdullah Saeed's thought on the importance of conducting contextual exegesis was based on the solid domination of literal (textual) commentary of the Quran, particularly regarding ethics-legal verses. Based on Saeed's point of view, ethic-legal verses commentary must account for social changes to support the close relationship between Quran and the current Muslims. Several intellectual figures influenced Abdullah Saeed's thoughts related to contextual exegeses, such as Fazlur Rahman, Ghulam Ahmad Parvez, Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd, Mohammed Arkoun, Farid Esack, and Khaled Abou El Fadl. The theoretical foundations of the Quran contextual exegesis proposed by Abdullah Saeed can be traced back through his notion on revelation concept, the flexibility of meaning, and text meaning as a commentary.
