Abstract

Classical Javanese literary works have many variations, one of which is the work entitled Wulangreh (teaching with dedication) written by King Pakubuwana IV of the Surakarta palace when Indonesia was still under Dutch colonial rule. This study aims to describe the beauty of universal Islamic cultural values in this book, which was published in the 18th century but is still being used today. The question answered is, are the universal cultural values in the book still relevant today? What values attract tourists to come and learn about them? The research method used is descriptive qualitative with a hermeneutic approach triangulated with the opinion of cultural experts. The data was obtained by interpreting the thoughts of King Pakubuwana IV written in the book and interviews with Kanjeng Yusdianto, a traditional leader of the Surakarta palace and the head of the Radya Pustaka museum, Didik Suharjono. The results of the analysis show that the values in the book can be a reference for the world because of their universal nature, including the values of equality, multiculturalism, and civilization. The beauty of the language and the message conveyed by the King is very touching, especially if tourists want to come to Surakarta to see directly Wulangreh, the tomb of King Pakubuwana IV, the Radya Pustaka museum, and the Surakarta Palace. The religious and cultural values of Islam in the book can be used as provisions for readers in facing life today. Wulangreh, Pakubuwana IV Tomb, Surakarta Palace, and Radya Pustaka Museum are icons of religious and cultural tourism destinations in the recommended Era 5.0.

Abstract

Background: The expansion of Indonesian novels across historical periods has produced complex and overlapping thematic formations that remain difficult to map systematically using conventional close-reading approaches. Objective: This study aims to identify dominant themes, trace their temporal shifts, and examine conceptual overlap among Indonesian novels through a computational framework. Method: Employing a digital humanities approach, the study analyzes a corpus of 30 Indonesian novels (1920-2022) using concept mining, CF-IDF weighting, semantic similarity measurement, and network analysis. Results: The findings reveal dominant thematic clusters centered on social inequality, nationalism, gender, religion, and modernization; clear temporal shifts in thematic emphasis across literary periods; and dense conceptual overlap, with social inequality functioning as a central thematic hub. Theme–theme projection and betweenness centrality analysis further demonstrate that thematic meaning emerges through relational structures rather than isolated categories. Implication: These results strengthen empirical literary analysis by integrating computational rigor with interpretive criticism. Novelty: This study introduces a replicable, network-based thematic mapping model for Indonesian novels, advancing computational literary studies in the Indonesian context.

Abstract

Abstract

The Javanese concept of sumarah is frequently interpreted as passive surrender or resignation to fate. Such an interpretation, however, overlooks its ethical, cultural, and philosophical dimensions within Javanese society. This article re-examines sumarah through Umar Kayam’s novella Sri Sumarah, arguing that the concept represents an indigenous ethics of cultural resilience rather than passive submission. Employing a qualitative interpretive design with a hermeneutic literary approach, the study analyzes the narrative construction of Sri Sumarah’s life in relation to Javanese ethical philosophy, cultural resilience, narrative ethics, and female agency. The analysis reveals that sumarah functions as an active ethical orientation through which the protagonist transforms personal loss, historical trauma, and social uncertainty into responsibility, perseverance, and meaningful action. Sri Sumarah’s resilience is manifested not through resistance or confrontation but through her commitment to educating her daughter, sustaining her family through honest work, rebuilding her social identity as Bu Guru Pijit, and maintaining dignity amid adversity. Rather than depicting a submissive woman constrained by patriarchal traditions, Kayam presents Sri Sumarah as a morally autonomous subject whose agency is expressed through culturally embedded practices of patience, care, discipline, and responsibility. These findings challenge conventional readings of Javanese femininity by demonstrating that sumarah enables women to negotiate vulnerability while preserving ethical integrity and social continuity. The study contributes to contemporary humanities scholarship by positioning sumarah as a locally grounded philosophical framework that enriches global discussions of cultural resilience, indigenous knowledge, narrative ethics, and women’s agency.

Abstract

In the context of Indonesian literature, the poet Iman Budhi Santosa holds a significant position as one of the poets who consistently incorporates natural landscapes, local wisdom, and human–environment relationships into his poetry. His works not only represent nature as an aesthetic backdrop but also as an ethical and symbolic entity intertwined with issues of sustainability, spirituality, and a critique of exploitative modernity. This study examines sustainability rooted in local cosmology and the daily practices of communities on the slopes of Mount Merapi through the relationship between humans and nature in Iman Budhi Santosa’s poetry. Data sources were drawn from Iman Budhi Santosa’s poems titled: (1) Perumput Merapi, (2) Sujud Petani Lereng Merapi, and (3) Di Puncak Gunung Bibi. The results indicate that these poems can be categorized into two forms: (1) environmental sustainability, and (2) the relationship between humans and nature. Environmental sustainability in Iman Budhi Santosa’s poetry articulates sustainability as a practice of coexistence, respect for nonhuman agency, and the community’s ability to maintain and restore its ecological relationships. In the section on the relationship between humans and nature, Iman Budhi Santosa’s poetry constructs motifs of environmental sustainability through representations of human–nature relationships grounded in non-anthropocentric ethics. “At the Summit of Mount Bibi” affirms the ecological kinship between humans and the mountain; “The Grass Cutter of Merapi” illustrates the multispecies coexistence that sustains ecosystem balance; while “The Prostration of the Farmers on the Slopes of Merapi” demonstrates the ecological resilience born of acceptance of nature’s dynamics.
