Abstract

Effective education requires an approach that encourages ability to analyze critically, particularly when learning mathematics which is often considered challenging by students. Problem Based Learning model is considered capable of developing students' critical thinking abilities through real problem solving and collaboration. The purpose of this study is to find out how the Problem Based Learning approach affected the critical thinking abilities of Grade X students at SMAN 1 Driyorejo in the subject of arithmetic sequences throughout the 2024–2025 school year. The research employs an appropriate experimental design, namely the pretest-posttest control group design, and takes a quantitative approach.. The sample includes two classes: class X-6 as the experimental group implementing the Problem Based Leaning model, and class X-7 as the control group applying conventional teaching methods. Critical thinking assessments were used to gather data both before and after the intervention. To ascertain whether there was a significant difference between the two groups, the data were examined using a t-test. The findings indicated that the average pretest scores for the control and experimental classes were 31,91 and 58,71, respectively, while the average posttest scores were 46,48 and 90,05. Before testing the hypothesis, students' critical thinking test scores must be checked for normality and homogeneity to ensure the data is normally distributed and has the same variance. The data analysis's findings demonstrate the worth of t_count>t_table, result is |-19,826>-1,995 | for pretest questions and the value of t_count>t_table, result is |-48,278>-1,995| for posttest questions. Thus, when compared to conventional teaching approaches, the data analysis results demonstrate that the Problem Based Learning model significantly improves students' critical thinking abilities.Keyword: Problem Based Learning, Critical Thinking Abilities, Arithmetic Sequence

Abstract

Critical thinking abilities and mathematical content are closely related since students must use critical reasoning, analysis, and problem-solving techniques to grasp mathematical ideas. However, field data reveals that many students still experience difficulties in developing adequate mathematical critical thinking abilities. This study aims to investigate the influence of implementing the Discovery Learning model on students’ mathematical critical thinking skills. The research employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design. The population included all grade X students at SMAN 1 Driyorejo in the academic year 2024/2025. Through purposive sampling, two classes were selected as research samples: class X-1 as the control group taught using conventional learning methods such as lectures and repetitive practice, and class X-5 as the experimental group that received instruction through the Discovery Learning model. Data were collected through a posttest administered after the learning intervention. The instrument consisted of five story-based questions centered on arithmetic sequences, designed to assess students’ critical thinking in mathematics. The data analysis process began with the normality test using the Chi-Square method, followed by a homogeneity test using the F-test to validate statistical assumptions. Upon meeting these requirements, the t-test was conducted to examine the research hypothesis and compare the posttest results of both groups. The findings revealed that the Discovery Learning model had a significant positive impact on students’ mathematical critical thinking skills. Therefore, it is recommended that this model be utilized more broadly across various subject matters and educational levels to foster deeper engagement and critical thinking among students.

Abstract

This descriptive qualitative study selected three high school students to describe students' mathematical literacy skills in solving PISA model problems based on adversity quotient (AQ). Three subjects from different AQs were involved in this study based on the results of completing the Adversity Response Profile (ARP) questionnaire and good oral communication skills based on the advice of mathematics teachers. Students' AQ was collected through ARP questionnaire instrument, mathematical literacy skills were collected through providing PISA questions and interview guidelines. Furthermore, the data were analyzed based on the stages of reduction, presentation, and conclusion. The results of completing the ARP questionnaire obtained three subjects with AQ climber, camper, and quitter supported by good communication skills. The results of this study and through triangulation of techniques showed that subjects with AQ climber and camper satisfied five indicators of mathematical literacy skills, including communication, mathematization, reasoning and argumentation, using mathematical tools, and designing solution strategies. Meanwhile, AQ quitter subjects were only able to satisfy four indicators of mathematical literacy indicators, which are mathematization, representation, reasoning and argumentation, use of mathematical tools, and design of solution strategies. The findings of this study are that quitter subjects are unable to satisfy communication indicators while climber and camper subjects are able to satisfy communication indicators. In addition, quitter subjects were also unable to use symbolic, technical, formal, language and operation forms in solving PISA problems, while climber and camper subjects were able to satisfy these indicators.

Abstract

The low level of students' collaboration skills in mathematics learning, based on initial classroom observations, indicates the need for a learning model that can enhance such skills.  This study aims to examine the effect of PjBL on students' cooperative attitude in learning mathematics using a quantitative quasi-experimental design with a posttest-only control group. The population consisted of all seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri Surabaya. Two classes were selected as the research sample using a purposive sampling technique. The PjBL model was applied in class VII-I, while class VII-G used conventional learning methods. The data collection instrument was an observation sheet used to assess students' cooperative attitude during learning. Data were analyzed using normality tests, homogeneity tests, and t-tests. The results of the hypothesis test showed a significant difference in the average attitude of student cooperation between the control class and the experimental class, with the experimental class yielding higher results. Based on these results, the PjBL model has a positive impact on students’ cooperative attitude in learning mathematics. This study is important because cooperation is one of the 21st-century skills that needs to be developed through mathematics education.

Abstract

Problem solving is an important skill, and making decisions about the basis of critical thinking skills. This study is a descriptive qualitative study to describe the critical thinking of 8th grade public junior high school students in the suburbs of Surabaya, East Java in solving TVLS problems. Fifteen junior high school students contributed to the study and were given questionnaires to get three subjects with different critical thinking abilities. Furthermore, each subject was requested to solve TVLS word problems and then interviewed. The instruments used in this study were a critical thinking questionnaire (CTAT), TVLS word problems, semi-structured interview guidelines. The data was analyzed based on indicators that combined the stages of Polya's problem solving and critical thinking. The data were analyzed using critical thinking indicators that have been determined by the authors and the results obtained showed that (1) uncritical and low critical subjects were unable to complete the critical thinking indicators at each stage of problem solving; (2) medium critical, critical, and highly critical subjects were able to complete the critical thinking indicators at each stage of problem solving. For this reason, it is advised that teachers teach their students to think critically in solving problems in every learning process
