Abstract

This study aims to describe the participation performance of students' basic teaching skills in microteaching. This quantitative study utilized questionnaire to collect the data. The data is processed based on a standardized scale in the assessment of basic teaching skills using the Likert scale. Based on the distribution of 32 respondents viewed from 7 indicators of opening skills, namely indicators of attracting attention and generating motivation, 23 respondents received a scale of 5 (very good) with an achievement of 0.68. The skills to close the lesson are indicators providing references, showing links, and making summaries. The visible scale is 2 (less) with 27 respondents, and the level of achievement is 0.84. In general, the skills of opening lessons are in a good category, but the skills of closing lessons are still lacking. Observation of the skill to explain, it appears that the achievement score indicators of motivation and clarity (use of language, intonation) got a score of 5 (very good) from 25 respondents, with an achievement of 0.78. In detail, the weaknesses can be seen in the organization of insufficient material explanations, providing relevant examples, and applying fun learning methods. Questions or feedback are only memory and memorization, as seen in 27 respondents who got a scale of 2 (less) with an achievement of 0.87. It means that microteaching provides positive effect in helping them become more confident, gain experience, teach a lesson effectively, communicate effectively, wrap up a lesson, manage a classroom, plan ahead, and manage their time effectively.

Abstract

Developing narrative writing skills remains a challenge for EFL learners, particularly in secondary education. This study investigated the effectiveness of storyboarding as an instructional medium to improve narrative writing among tenth-grade students at SMA Swasta Kampus Nommensen Pematangsiantar. A quasi-experimental design with non-equivalent control groups was employed. Forty students were purposively assigned to either an experimental group, which received instruction using storyboard-based activities, or a control group, which received conventional instruction. Narrative writing performance was measured before and after the intervention using a rubric assessing content, organization, vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to analyze posttest scores while controlling for pretest performance. The ANCOVA results indicated a statistically significant effect of storyboarding on narrative writing outcomes, F(1,37) = 24.57, p .001, partial η² = 0.40. Adjusted posttest means showed that students in the experimental group outperformed those in the control group (M = 78.3 vs. M = 67.9). The effect size was large, with Hedges’ g = 1.12, 95% CI [0.62, 1.62]. These findings suggest that integrating storyboards as visual-verbal planning tools significantly enhances students’ narrative writing, particularly in content development and organization. This study underscores the pedagogical value of interactive media in EFL writing instruction and recommends further research across diverse genres and educational contexts to generalize these results.

Abstract

Proverbs that represent their values and perspective are part of the rich cultural legacy of the Batak people of North Sumatra, Indonesia. "Dalihan Natolu" (translates as "The Three Hearth Stones") is one such proverb. This proverb is an important part of Batak social structure and values, which makes it a valuable topic for linguistic study. The "Dalihan Natolu" proverb is examined in this study using the Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) theoretical paradigm. SFG is a linguistic approach that examines the ways in which language is employed to create meaning and depict the outside world. We can learn more about the grammatical and semantic elements of the "Dalihan Natolu" proverb that contribute to its cultural importance by using SFG to analyze it. The ideational, interpersonal, and textual meta functions of SFG are the three main areas of analysis. The proverb's representation of experiences and construction of reality are examined by the ideational meta function. The interpersonal meta function looks at how the proverb conveys the speaker's position and enacts social interactions. The textual meta function looks at the proverb's method of arranging ideas to create a logical and cohesive message. The study's goal is to identify the language structures and patterns that underlie the cultural significance and symbolic force of the "Dalihan Natolu" adage through this in-depth investigation. Understanding the proverb from the standpoint of Systemic Functional Grammar helps us to better grasp the richness and complexity of Batak cultural expression as well as its applicability in the contemporary era. The results of this work advance the field of linguistic analysis of cultural artefacts and the academic understanding of Batak language and culture. In light of the swift advancements in social and technological spheres, the knowledge acquired can also contribute to the preservation and promotion of Batak cultural heritage.

Abstract

This study investigates the phenomenon of sexist verbal violence on social media through a psycholinguistic lens, focusing on the linguistic forms, communicative functions, and psychological impacts of abusive language directed at women. Triggered by the growing prevalence of gendered hate speech on platforms such as TikTok and Instagram, particularly targeting female public figures, this research employs a descriptive qualitative method supported by speech act theory (Austin, 1962; Searle, 1969). A total of 150 comments were analyzed, of which 55 were identified as containing sexist verbal abuse. The findings reveal that these utterances typically involve illocutionary speech acts such as insults, verbal sexual harassment, gender stereotyping, and moral policing. The corresponding perlocutionary effects include emotional harm, such as shame, fear, and diminished self-confidence in the victims. From a psycholinguistic perspective, the production of such language reflects internalized gender bias, affective disinhibition, and the activation of negative cognitive schemas. The study further highlights how digital anonymity and ethical disinhibition enable users to express aggression with minimal accountability. Overall, the results indicate that language is strategically used to exert power and reinforce patriarchal norms within digital discourse. This research underscores the need for greater linguistic awareness, the promotion of digital empathy, and the implementation of more responsive communication ethics in online environments. Creating safer, more inclusive digital spaces requires a multidimensional approach involving education, platform regulation, and cultural change in how language is used and interpreted.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of WordWall, a digital game-based learning platform, in improving students’ English vocabulary achievement. Conducted at SMP Negeri 4 Kota Pematangsiantar during the 2025/2026 academic year, the research involved 62 seventh-grade students divided into two groups: an experimental group taught using WordWall and a control group taught through traditional textbook-based instruction. Employing a quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test procedures for both groups, the study found a notable increase in the vocabulary scores of the experimental group compared to the control group. The experimental group’s mean post-test score (85.06) surpassed the school’s minimum mastery criterion (KKM) of 72, while the control group’s mean score was 71.6. Results from paired and independent sample t-tests indicated a significant difference (p < 0.05) between the two groups, validating the positive influence of WordWall on vocabulary acquisition. Moreover, students exposed to WordWall showed improved understanding and retention of word formation, such as recognizing different word classes (nouns, verbs, etc.). These findings highlight that incorporating digital game-based tools like WordWall can enhance both student engagement and learning outcomes. The study concludes that WordWall effectively supports vocabulary development while promoting a more interactive and learner-centered classroom environment, and recommends its adoption by teachers to overcome vocabulary learning challenges in English education.
