Abstract

Introduction: Explorations into the periodontal medicine relationship have discovered interleukin-17 (IL-17) cytokine as one of the pro-inflammatory mediators that play a crucial role in the initiation and progression of the chronic periodontal disease. This case and control study aimed to compare the serum IL-17 concentration between chronic periodontitis and healthy subjects and to assess the relationship between the IL-17 serum and the clinical periodontal parameters in chronic periodontitis patients. Methods: This study was a case-control study. The subjects were selected using purposive sampling method. The periodontal screening assessment in the Family Treatment Center and Postgraduate Dental Clinic, Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital. A total of 55 samples who fit with the inclusion and exclusion study criteria of full-mouth clinical periodontal records together with blood serums were obtained from 28 chronic periodontitis patients and from 27 healthy subjects. The concentration of IL-17 cytokine in serum was measured using ELISA test. Results: Subjects with periodontal disease presented significantly worse clinical parameters (p<0.001) compared to control. The level of serum IL-17 concentration was significantly higher (p=0.026) in chronic periodontitis subjects 3.6 (1.03) pg/mL compared to the control 3.1 (0.70) pg/mL. Conclusions: There was no correlation between the level of IL-17 concentration in the serum and clinical periodontal parameters.

Abstract

The miswak, a traditional chewing stick for cleaning teeth, is made from the plant Salvadora persica. It contains a wide range of healthy components in maintaining good oral hygiene. The objective of this study is to determine the effectiveness of whitening toothpaste containing Salvadora persica extract at removing tea and chlorhexidine stain by comparing with one of commercially available whitening toothpaste and drinking water as a control group. A randomized experimental study was done. The standard method cycled clear acrylic specimens through artificial saliva, 0.2% chlorhexidine and tea on the hour 8 times per day and stain were measured using a spectrophotometer to achieve baseline reading. Test interventions were 2 whitening kinds of toothpaste; whitening toothpaste containing Salvadora persica extract (group A), commercial whitening toothpaste (group B) and drinking water as a control group (group C). Treatment interventions were done at 09:00 and 16:00 by exposing the specimens to slurries of each treatment for 2 minutes. The specimens remained in the artificial saliva between each cycles day and night. At the end of the day, the stain was assessed by spectrophotometer and Lobene Stain Index. The comparison of total stain removal assessed by spectrophotometer on day 5 between all groups was significant (p=0.007). The median of total stain removal and visual assessment recording using Lobene stain index showed Salvadora persica whitening toothpaste scored more reduction of staining followed by commercial whitening toothpaste and then control group. As a conclusion, the whitening toothpaste containing Salvadora persica is more effective at removing tea and chlorhexidine stain.

Abstract

A relationship between periodontal disease and cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been reported in several studies. This association was explained based on the chronic systemic inflammatory response which may lead to arterial stiffness in chronic periodontitis (CP). To compare arterial stiffness as carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV) between patients with localized severe CP (LSCP) and generalized severe CP (GSCP). Five patients with LSCP and 12 patients with GSCP were recruited in a cross-sectional study. Subjects were excluded if they had systemic diseases other than CP. Diagnosis of LSCP and GSCP was made based on probing depth and radiographic bone loss. Carotid-femoral PWV was measured using the Complior® machine. Data were analyzed using SPSS. Carotid-femoral PWV was higher among patients with GSCP as compared to those with LSCP although the difference did not reach a significant level. Median (interquartile range) PWV was 7.5 (1.50) and 7.0 (1.03) m/sec respectively in patients with GSCP and LSCP (p = 0.224). Among patients with CP, aorta is stiffer in GSCP than in LSCP

Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction: Radiotherapy is a cancer therapy that uses ionizing radiation to damage cancer cells. Ionizing radiation in the head and neck area can disrupt the function and integrity of the oral mucosa and cause oral mucositis. In Bandung, the prevalence and risk factors of oral mucositis in head and neck cancer (HNC) patients undergoing radiotherapy have not been studied. Some textbooks claim that the prevalence of radiotherapy-induced oral mucositis in HNC patients occurs at almost 100%. Various risk factors associated with oral mucositis have been studied, giving significantly different results. This research analyzes the correlation between risk factors and mucositis oral in head and neck cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy. Methods: This research is a cross-sectional retrospective study with secondary data from medical records of HNC patients at RSHS from January 2015 until December 2019. A consecutive sampling method was used to collect the data that match the Inclusion criteria, including diagnosis of HNC(ICD-10), receiving radiotherapy from the first cycle until the last cycle; having a complete medical record following variables (location of HNC coding by ICD-10, gender, age, education level, smoking habit, the cycle of radiotherapy, oral treatment, body mass index, and comorbid disease). All data were then analyzed using Spearman correlation. Result: 171 medical records showed 59 patients had oral mucositis after radiotherapy. 26.9% male and 7.6% female, with susceptible age 40-60 years. Analysis of the Spearman correlation, there is a significant relationship between body mass index (BMI) (ρ = 0,001), smoking habits (ρ = 0,001), and radiotherapy cycles (ρ = 0.001). Conclusion: There is a correlation between risk factors of oral mucositis in HNC patients undergoing radiotherapy in RSHS, including body mass index (BMI), smoking habits, and radiotherapy cycles.Keywords: Head and neck cancer; oral mucositis; prevalence; risk factor; retrospective study

Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction: Surgical masks commonly have many layers. The outer layer acts as the initial filtration and the protection for the middle layer, the middle layer acts as the primary filtration, and the innermost layer absorbs liquid to prevent the spread of droplets from the mask's wearer. The recommended duration of wearing medical and fabric masks is 4–6 hours, while some studies stated that the maximum duration is 8 hours. The use of S. aureus in this study was based on its clinical relevance as a major cause of nosocomial infections. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of the filtration in three-layer and four-layer masks against S. aureus. Methods: This experimental study followed the methods of previous research, and followed the Standard Test Method from SNI 8489 2018 with several adjustments consisting of several steps, i.e., preparation of tested masks, bacterial culture media, and tested bacteria; determination of masks’ filtration efficacy; confirmation of the efficacy. All steps were repeated 15 times with exposure times of 2, 4, 6, and 8 hours and analysis using the chi-square test. Results: The percentage of surgical masks filtration effectiveness was indicated by the growth of S. aureus in Nutrient Agar media. The four-layer surgical masks showed the highest percentage (80%) of 2 hours and 4 hours of usage. Both types showed the lowest percentage of 8 hours of usage. Based on the duration of wearing, the mask's filtration effectiveness from the highest and lowest score was the S. aureus-exposed media for 2, 4, 6, and 8 hours, respectively p<0.050. The comparison value for the effectiveness of mask filtration between the type of masks and the length of use was 0.003. Conclusion: The filtration effectiveness of the four-layer masks is higher than the three-layer masks according to the duration of wearing the masks.Keyword : Surgical masks, filtration, duration, S.aureus

Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction: Dentists play a significant role in preventing the transmission of 2019-nCoV. Recommended infection control measures during dental practice can block the route of person-to-person transmission. Dentists and their personnel are used to assess the risk of cross-infection. This study aimed to obtain dentists' knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding the Covid-19 pandemic in Indonesia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample of licensed dentists using the convenience sampling technique. The minimum sample size was counted using the formula for a descriptive analysis of one group with the expected proportion of 50% and the confidence level of 95%, and obtained 407 respondents from 31 provinces. Data was collected using a questionnaire distributed via a shortened link. 99.75% of respondents knew personal protective equipment, but only 84.28% knew the proper removal procedure. 99.75% of respondents knew about dental devices that cause aerosols, and all respondents knew about social and physical distancing. Result: Dentists’ attitudes regarding personal protective equipment were that they needed and maintained it during the pandemic. All respondents stated that social and physical distancing was critical and must be maintained while providing health services. Regarding their practices, all respondents did social and physical distancing in their daily lives and during dental procedures. Conclusion: Dentists' knowledge is already good in several ways, but with several matters that still need to be improved, their attitudes and practices are good criteria. Keywords: smart Odontogram; medical record; application; usability testing; user’s experience

Background: To analyse correlation of pregnant oral health scoring model with inflammatory protein markers sCD14 and prostaglandins.Method: A cross-sectional consisted of 80 pregnant women who met inclusion criteria used consecutive sampling.Result: The POSC-p model which was based on oral health scoring, components of salivary condition was significantly correlated with sCD14 and the POSC-p model and combined of oral health scoring was significantly correlated with prostaglandins.Conclusion: The POSC-p score model and the sCD14 of clinical examination have correlation consist of tooth decay, occlusion and salivary condition consist of salivary pH level, salivary volume and salivary buffer.  However, there was no substantial correlation between the pregnant oral health scoring model of felt need and the pregnant oral health scoring for salivary conditions or the combined POSC-p score and sCD14 levels and POSC-p Scores (combined) significant correlation with sCD14

Abstract

Introduction: Cymbopogon nardus is a strong aromatic plant with relevant medicinal properties due to its essential chemical compounds and its potential therapeutic effects. This study was aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial activities of citronella essential oil against several oral pathogens and to identify the volatile compounds. Methods: The essential oil of C. nardus was purchased from Excellent Wisdom Sdn. Bhd., Malaysia. The source of raw material was collected from Malacca, the southern region of Malaysia, and the company made its taxonomic identification. An experimental in-vitro study was conducted on the essential oil processed from C. nardus genus Cymbopogon of Poaceae family. The in-vitro antimicrobial activities of C. nardus essential oil were evaluated against Streptococcus mutans (ATCC 25175), Streptococcus sobrinus (ATCC 33478), and Candida albicans (ATCC 10231) using agar well diffusion assay. The identification of the volatile compounds was performed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Results: The C. nardus essential oil exhibited inhibitory activity against C. albicans at the concentration of 6.25%, whereby the inhibitory activity against S. mutans and S. sobrinus began at the concentration of 25%. The antimicrobial activity of C. nardus essential oil was statistically significant at the concentration of 50% in all tested pathogens. The GC-MS analysis of the C. nardus essential oil revealed the presence of few constituents, which include monoterpenes, diterpenes, sesquiterpenes and phenolic compounds. Monoterpenes were the major identified terpenoids and contributed to 54.45% of the total volatile composition. The main identified monoterpenes were citronellal (11.35%), z-Citral (11.34%), β-Myrcene (6.70%), and β-Trans-ocimene (6.03%), which was the first time β-Myrcene and β-Trans-ocimene was found in high percentage. Conclusion: C. nardus essential oil is an active antibacterial agent against several oral pathogens, and the percentages of active volatile compounds are different within different origins.
