Abstract

Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a typical chronic condition commonly affecting the upper airway. Allergic rhinitis is marked by nasal congestion, rhinorrhea, pruritus, sneezing, and postnasal drip syndrome (PND), which includes eye itching and erythema. This study aims to assess the validity and reliability of the Indonesian version of the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of the allergic rhinitis questionnaire. The study employed a cross-sectional design. The study included patients with allergic rhinitis who were 18 or older and visited the otorhinolaryngology clinic between January and February 2024. The questionnaire was generated and disseminated using a Google form, and the statistical analysis was performed with SPSS 22.0. The correlation coefficient (r) between all questions on the knowledge dimension was consistently high, ranging from 0.302 to 0.828. The items on the attitude dimension had a strong positive association with the total score, as seen by the high correlation coefficients (all r = 0.962). The practice dimension also exhibited high correlation coefficients, ranging from 0.273 to 0.810 in total score. The questionnaire's validity and reliability have been established, confirming that the Indonesian version is recommended for future studies.

Abstract

Circumcision is a common surgical operation that entails excising the foreskin from the penis, primarily to improve hygiene and prevent the accumulation of smegma. This practice is widely observed worldwide, especially within Muslim and Jewish populations. However, despite its advantages, circumcision may lead to several complications, such as excessive bleeding and infections. A healthy 13-year-old male presented for circumcision due to grade 2 phimosis, seeking to improve his personal hygiene. The procedure was executed using a combination of diode laser technology and cyanoacrylate skin glue, which minimized tissue trauma and provided effective wound closure. When circumcision is performed utilizing advanced methods such as diode laser and cyanoacrylate glue, it is regarded as a safe and effective intervention. This approach offers considerable benefits in terms of recovery duration, cosmetic results, and overall patient comfort, while also maintaining low rates of complications.

The habit of cleaning the ears with cotton buds often triggers earwax buildup, a common cause of conductive hearing loss. The community continues to widely practice this habit despite the risk of injury, infection, and hearing loss. The purpose of this community service activity is to increase awareness of members of the “Aisyiyah Condongcatur Barat” Branch as community service partners about the importance of safe and proper ear care. The research methods used include focus group discussion (FGD), education through PowerPoint media, and evaluation of participant knowledge using 10 questions in the pre- and post-tests. The evaluation results showed a significant increase in participants’ knowledge after the educational intervention, with post-test scores averaging 0.8 points higher than pre-test scores. These findings indicate that health education is effective in shaping positive perceptions and behaviours towards ear care. This program is expected to serve as a sustainable, community-based model for promotive and preventive ear health education.

Abstract

Introduction: Many hearing problems arise from a lack of understanding about ear health and proper care. Lack of public awareness of how to maintain ear health, coupled with improper ear cleaning techniques such as using cotton swabs or other instruments, can lead to earwax blockages or infections in the outer ear. Some ear infections can be prevented by public health promotion activities, including videos. This study aims to examine the effect of ear health education videos on knowledge, attitudes, and ear cleaning practices. Methods: This study used a quasi-experimental pre-test and post-test design. Sixty-three medical students were recruited using consecutive sampling. After obtaining informed consent, they were asked to complete a valid and reliable Indonesian version questionnaire on knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of ear health, watch an educational video about anatomy, physiology, and ear health safety care, and then complete the same questionnaire again. Results: The research respondents were 38 (60.3%) female students and 25 (39.7%) male students. Overall KAP scores improved significantly after video intervention (Z = -3.92, p < 0.001, r = 0.49, 95% CI = [0.28-0.66]). Stratified analysis of each domain revealed heterogeneous outcomes. Knowledge and attitude scores showed a non-significant increase, but practices improved significantly with a small to moderate effect (Z = -2.03, p = 0.042, r = 0.26, 95% CI = [0.40-3.00]), particularly regarding avoidance of unsafe ear cleaning tools and noise exposure. Conclusion:Ear health video education did not substantially alter knowledge and attitude, but it produced significant behavioral shifts in self-reported ear-care practices. The absence of substantial change in knowledge and attitude ratings may be due to a high baseline level in this cohort, indicating a possible ceiling effect. This behavioral shift aligns with theories suggesting that multimedia interventions effectively improve procedural skills and self-efficacy, aiding the application of existing knowledge into positive action rather than promoting deeper conceptual change.

Abstract

Introduction: Schwannomas, are non-malignant tumors with well-defined encapsulation and gradual growth patterns. These tumors consist of Schwann cells, which originate from the neural crest. The prevalence of schwannoma cases in the head and neck region ranges from approximately 25% to 45%. However, in the sinus cavity, the occurrence is only 4%. Case Presentation: In this study, we provide a clinical case with a 25-year-old female patient with rhinorrhoea symptoms, recurrent epistaxis, and a decreased sense of smell. The patient had a progressive obstruction in the right nasal cavity over one year. A biopsy and computed tomography (CT) scan identified a schwannoma and soft tissue density lesions in the right maxillary ethmoid sinuses and left septal deviation. The confirmation of schwannoma diagnosis is also achieved through histopathological examination. The tumor was surgically excised from the patient's body utilizing lateral rhinotomy and an extirpation technique under general anesthesia. The patient had positive outcomes during the follow-up; the patient revealed the absence of symptoms and no evidence of disease recurrence. Conclusions: Lateral rhinotomy with extirpation methods represents an effective option for managing sinonasal schwannoma due to its ability to access challenging anatomical regions and facilitate the sensitive excision of tumors.

Abstract

Tonsillectomy is one of the most often conducted surgical procedures in children. It has several surgical techniques, such as tonsillectomy with thermal welding, guillotine excision, electrocautery, cryosurgery, coblation, ultrasonic removal, laser removal, monopolar and bipolar surgery, and tonsillectomy with ligatures. This case report aims to present a detailed description of a 9-year-old boy who is suffering from tonsillitis. The patient came to the Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) clinic with a chronic history of reoccurring throat pain over the past two years, which has lately intensified over the past six months. Complaints are experienced nearly monthly, occasionally accompanied by pain while swallowing, coughing, and a runny nose. The patient experiences a laser-assisted surgical procedure to remove the tonsils. We performed a surgical procedure to excise the tonsil mass using a gallium aluminum arsenide (GaAlAs) diode laser with a wavelength of 980nm/1470nm and a power of 4 watts. This procedure was successfully performed. After laser tonsillectomy treatment on days 1-3, the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) score was 1, indicating no bleeding. On the fourth day, the patient had no pain or bleeding.

Abstract

Introduction: Noise exposure is a problem in children due to the vulnerability of the growing auditory system and its impact on hearing and quality of life during early developmental phases, which might influence a child's future path. Children have different external ear anatomy than adults, with narrower ear canals that absorb higher-frequency sounds. Hearing loss can be minimized by implementing educational programs, regulations, and laws to increase awareness and proactively limit damage from noise. This article will describe the noise awareness empowerment programs for parents of Aisyiyah Bustanul Athfal (ABA) Kentungan Kindergarten in Yogyakarta. Methods: The community empowerment program collaborator is Pimpinan Ranting Aisyiyah (PRA) Condongcatur Barat, and it includes approximately 24 parents of ABA Kentungan Kindergarten students. Results: The program's results indicated that the average score of participants' knowledge before the program started was 51.6 out of 100. The average score increased to 82.9 after the program. Conclusion: The community empowerment team recommends that all parents understand the importance of protecting children's environment from excessive noise exposure. Furthermore, teachers can help by providing a suitable environment and encouraging safer listening habits with Personal Listening Devices (PLDs). The government should initiate campaigns to increase public awareness of excessive noise exposure and regulate the standard volume of toys and sleep machines for newborns and children.
