Abstract

Around the 18th century, Muslims experienced a period of intellectual stagnation as a result of ijtihad, which appeared to have been tightly shut. Furthermore, heretical and khurafat traditions are becoming increasingly common. Consequently, Muslims drifted further away from the Quran's teachings and the Prophet's Sunnah. These kinds of circumstances motivated Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Wahhab to respond by attempting to restore the original spirit of Islamic revivalism (Tajdid) by going back to the pure teachings of Tawhid, as his predecessors, Ahmad bin Hanbal and Ibn Taymiyyah, had done previously. This paper aims to examine the characteristics of Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Wahhab’s purification of the Tauhid and his role in the establishment of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which was regarded as one of the most successful ideologies institutionalizing the puritanical Islamic revival has ever seen in the history of contemporary Islamic politics. This work applies qualitative methodology with a historical approach, carried out by collecting data from Ibn ‘Abd al-Wahhab’s book as a primary source and other related books, journals, and articles as secondary sources. The research found that Ibn ‘Abd al-Wahhab's tajdid began as a religious movement and rose to prominence after collaborating with Muhammad ibn Saud's political effort. After the foundation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia a century and a half later, this idea was successfully established as a state-owned ideology. The birth of the kingdom was inextricably connected to the growth of Nationalism in the Islamic world as a result of European colonialism.

Abstract

This article discusses the role of fatwas in the development of Islamic law, especially in Indonesia, which is institutionally represented by the Indonesian Ulema Council. The Qur'an and the Sunnah as the main sources of Islamic law are limited in terms of quantity, while the legal problems that arise in people's lives are increasingly complex and unlimited. To deal with various complex and novel problems, the legal requirements of which are sometimes not clearly stated in the Qur'an and the Sunnah, the application of ijtihad is absolutely necessary. One of the reasons for the formation of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) was to face and respond to situations like this. As an Islamic institution that has the authority to issue fatwas, the MUI has an important position in the development of Islamic law in Indonesia. Therefore, the methods applied by the MUI in carrying out ijtihad and issuing fatwas related to various legal problems faced in society also have high urgency. This paper attempts to explore the ijtihad method used by the MUI in carrying out ijtihad and issuing fatwas. By using a qualitative approach, this research found that the MUI ijtihad method uses three approaches: the Nash Qath'i approach, the Qawli approach, and the Manhaji approach, which are based on the context.

Abstract

The following paper discusses the trend in modern revisionist discourse about Qur'ānic studies with the critical engagement of John Wansbrough's idea. Known for his historical and literary criticism, Wansbrough claimed that the Qur'an was a product of Jewish and Christian traditions, and its canonization is of much later origin than that which is ascribed to the time of the Prophet Muhammad. While influential, this thesis has been criticized as an attack on the authenticity of the Qur'ān. This paper looks at the methodology and arguments of Wansbrough in light of scholars such as Fazlur Rahman, who question the assumptions of revisionism. Through qualitative library-based research, this paper highlights some of the methodological flaws in Wansbrough's approach and proposes alternatives that are in tune with Qur'ānic studies. The findings raise the need to respond to such criticisms if misinterpretations so rife in current Qurānic discourses are to be averted. This is a research contribution to the ongoing scholarly conversation on revisionist methodologies and textual interpretation in Qur'ānic studies.

Abstract

This study examines the tafsīr method of Firdaws al-Na'īm by Thaifur Ali Wafa, which represents a significant contribution to the development of contemporary tafsīr in Indonesia. This method integrates classical tafsīr traditions with a contextual approach relevant to local social and cultural issues, particularly in Madura. The main focus of this research is to analyze how Firdaws al-Na'īm combines the text of the Qur'ān with the cultural values of Madura and its contribution to addressing the modern challenges of Muslim life in Indonesia. Using a qualitative approach based on library research, this study compares Firdaws al-Na'īm with classical tafsir works such as Tafsīr al-Qhurtūbī, al-Nasāfī, al-Jalālayn, and Mafātih al-Ghayb. The findings reveal that Firdaws al-Na'īm offers a tafsīr that is not only theoretical but also practical, considering the social and cultural context. This method enriches the tafsīr tradition in Indonesia and provides a new, relevant perspective for contemporary Muslim life.

Abstract

Abstract

The spirit of education was renewed in the age of the Prophet Muhammad saw. through a talaqqī method in the Majlis that used to be conducted in the mosque. This system then improved over time, particularly during the Abbasid era, when many educational institutes were built to preserve Islamic civilization. The Madrasa al-Mustanṣiriyya, constructed in 1234 AD during the reign of al-Mustanṣir Billah, is one of the most renowned institutions. This madrasah is well-known for its complete system. This study aims to demonstrate the educational system's role in promoting civilization through the Madrasa al-Mustanṣiriyya, which will be discussed first on the social dimension in the era of al-Mustanṣir Billah in order to comprehend the establishment of Madrasa Mustanṣiriyya, its educational system, and its collapse. Thus, the qualitative method will be employed in this work, along with a historical study approach gleaned from books, journals, and related publications. This research discovered that the purpose of Madrasa al-Mustanṣiriyya, which was established during the declining age of the Abbasid, was to restore the majesty of this dynasty. Despite the chaos, the Caliph successfully developed the spirit of science and education through the Madrasa al-Mustanṣiriyya. Furthermore, it provides facilities for academic support through the waqf system. Unfortunately, the Mongol invasion of Baghdad succeeded in destroying it.

Abstract

The terms al-Zulumat and al-Nur, which are both derived from the Qur'an, are discussed in this article. There is a strong relationship between these two phrases. When these two words are mentioned together, the word al-Zulumat always appears in the plural form while the word Al-Nur always appears in the Singular form, which shows that this Qur'anic phrase identifies the plural or singular form based on the source or origin of the word. In research on the lafadz al-Zulumat and al-Nur, the Munasabah verses approach which does not delve beyond the meaning of a word explanation is frequently utilized. As a result, the author's methodological strategy for conducting this field research comprises a semantic-linguistic analysis of both phrases. This literature study uses qualitative research methods, by collecting various data from books, journal articles and other relevant documents related to the semantic topic of the Al-Qur'an. The aim of this research is to examine the secrets contained in the words al-Zulumat which are often compared with the words al-Nur. The research conducted found that these two expressions combined signify the sequential emergence of direction as well as the process of creation. This article is important for exploring the linguistic and rhetorical special that exists in Al-Qur'an phrases, especially in the words al-Zulumat and Al-Nur.

Abstract

This article analyzes the oral and written aspects of the Qur’an through Angelika Neuwirth’s pre-canonical framework, using sūrah al-Ikhlāṣ as a case study. It highlights Neuwirth’s argument that the oral nature of the Qur’an is essential for understanding its original communicative context, which has been obscured by its textual codification. The study employs a historical-critical methodology to examine the sociolinguistic context and the dynamic oral features of the Qur’an prior to its codification. Drawing on Neuwirth’s foundational works and supported by secondary literature, it proposes a pre-canonical reading approach that seeks to recover the socio-historical dimensions often overlooked in canonical interpretations. By exploring the interplay between oral and written dimensions, this study reveals how sūrah al-Ikhlāṣ reflects its early reception and positions it within its historical and cultural context. It addresses the broader question of how pre-canonical approaches enhance understanding of the Qur’an’s formative period. The findings underscore the layered meanings and contextual aspect embedded in the text which demonstrates the potential of pre-canonical readings to uncover the Qur’an’s historical and communicative complexities.
