Abstract

Fida’an is an activity carried out by Javanese Muslims after the death of one of their community member. The activity consists of reciting the Quranic verses of al-Ikhlas a thousand times or the tahlil up to 71.000 times which is addressed to the deceased to avoid the torment of the fires of hell and get holy rewards. This study seeks to find out the views of the people of Plosojenar Village, Kauman District, Ponorogo Regency regarding fida’an by inquiring (1) What and how is the practice of fida’an among people of Plosojenar? and (2) How do the people of Plosojenar associate fida’an practices with hadith texts? In this study, the authors used the method of observation, interviews, and documentation to obtain supporting data. The data analysis used was descriptive qualitative with a phenomenological approach to religion and anthropology of religious symbols by examining the concept of diversity in the symbols present in the ritual. The results of the study concluded that (1) the meaning of fida’an for the Plosojenar people is divided into two parts, namely burdening good deeds and freeing from the torment of hellfire; and (2) the community's view of fida’an is diverse such as getting rewards and guaranteed by Allah Swt to avoid hell, as well as the growth of togetherness, help, friendship and charity within the community.

“Ayat Mutasyābihāt” studies are often discussed differently from “Hadith Mutasyābihāt” studies “Hadith Mutasyābihāt” are traditions that are not yet clear in meaning and purpose because they contain a variety of meanings, so there is a need for in-depth research in order to obtain the proper meaning. The traditions that are said to be mutasyābihāt are traditions that enter into indicators, traditions pronounced by the Prophet symbolically, traditions found improbable in their eyes, traditions that are illogical or logical and metaphysical traditions or unknown meanings such as the afterlife, heaven, hell, the attributes of God, the torment of the grave and the apocalypse. This research will specialize the “hadits mutasyābihāt” which explains the nature of Allah by using the method of matan criticism and the understanding of hadith, from this study found differences of opinion in understanding the “hadith mutasyābihāt” there are those who reject “takwil” and those who preach their meanings by not reducing the majesty of God.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find the structure of Surah Al-Muzammil so that it can be seen whether the verses in it are coherent. This research method uses analysis, namely, to process data and answer research problems. The approach used in this literature research is Semitic Rhetorical Analysis (SRA) with descriptive analysis methods in data processing. The results of this research show that surah al-Muzammil is a text structure which is an application of SRA in surah al-Muzammil to produce a series consisting of 3 parts and 7 pieces which form a parallel concentric construction (A B/ x / A' B'). every piece and part have a relationship with other pieces and parts, so that every verse in surah al-Muzammil is interconnected. This finding was refuted by Richard Bell because each verse in surah al-Muzammil was able to be symmetrical with other verses from the lowest text level to the top text level, so this conclusion indicated that surah al-Muzammil was structured systematically and coherently.

Abstract

Abstract

The phenomenon of the meeting of two seas, as mentioned in the Qur'an, particularly in Surah Ar-Rahman: 19-20 and Surah Al-Furqan: 53, not only illustrates natural realities but also contains scientific significance relevant to modern scientific studies. This phenomenon describes the existence of a natural barrier separating two seas with different characteristics, such as salinity and temperature, which do not mix despite their close proximity. The scientific concept of a halocline, a transitional zone between two bodies of water with differing properties, provides a deeper explanation of this phenomenon. This paper aims to analyze the phenomenon of the meeting of two seas from the perspective of the Qur'an and science. The discussion not only reveals the connection between revelation and science but also delves into the philosophical and spiritual meanings embedded in this natural phenomenon. The study finds that the phenomenon of the meeting of two seas teaches the importance of maintaining environmental balance, valuing diversity, and fulfilling humanity’s role as stewards of the earth. Additionally, this phenomenon is relevant to efforts in environmental preservation and the sustainable management of natural resources. The analysis in this paper shows that the Qur'an and modern science harmonize in explaining natural phenomena, which can inspire efforts to protect the environment and strengthen the relationship between knowledge and faith. Thus, understanding this phenomenon can reinforce faith while increasing awareness of the critical human responsibility to preserve the earth.

Abstract

Global civilizational discourse remains entangled in epistemological asymmetries, wherein Western imperialism is exalted as a vehicle of progress while the Caliphate is vilified as a relic of despotism. This study interrogates such distortions, arguing that the Caliphate paradigm rooted in the Qur’anic principle of tawḥīd constitutes a theological and geopolitical antithesis to imperialism’s anthropocentric domination. Employing qualitative library research, this paper integrates critical discourse analysis, thematic Qur’anic exegesis (tafsīr maudūʿī), and comparative geopolitical insights through a decolonial epistemological lens (Santos). The findings reveal that the Caliphate positions sovereignty as a divine amānah, operationalized through maqāṣid al-sharīʿah, in stark contrast to the exploitative structures of imperialism evidenced by historical wealth extractions from colonized territories. Geopolitically, the Qur’anic ideal of ummah waḥidah (Q. 21:92) challenges colonial legacies of fragmentation, such as the Sykes-Picot Agreement, which has left 78% of Muslim-majority nations geopolitically vulnerable (FSI, 2023). Epistemologically, the paper advocates for an autonomous Islamic political framework by decentering Eurocentric constructs like the nation-state and rearticulating khilāfah beyond Orientalist tropes of tyranny (Said). In conclusion, the Caliphate is not a romanticized anachronism but a viable, justice-oriented paradigm—ontologically rooted in tawḥīd, geopolitically structured around unity, and epistemologically enabled through decolonized knowledge ecologies. It demands a reimagining of political theology that transcends imperial residues and asserts an authentically Islamic civilizational vision.

Abstract

The phenomenon of fatherlessness or the absence of fathers in children's lives is increasing due to social and cultural changes, having a significant impact on children's moral, psychological and social development. In this context, Surah Luqman verses 12-19, as interpreted by Ahmad Mustafa Al-Maraghi, provides moral and spiritual guidance that can help children face this challenge. This study aims to analyze how the moral values in Surah Luqman can be applied to overcome the impact of fatherlessness on children. Using the literature review method and descriptive-analytical analysis, this research explores the meaning of the verses and relates them to the problem of fatherlessness faced by children in modern life. The results show that the values in Surah Luqman verses 12-19 are very relevant in shaping the personality of children who grow up without a father figure. These values include gratitude to Allah (Verse 12), strengthening monotheism (Verse 13), respecting mothers (Verse 14), prioritizing parents (Verse 15), awareness of the consequences of actions (Verse 16), discipline in prayer (Verse 17), and humility and patience (Verses 18-19). These values can help children deal with the psychological, social, and emotional challenges of fatherlessness, while building a strong moral foundation in their lives. This research recommends the development of a Qur'anic values-based education module to be implemented in families, schools and communities, as well as an empirical study to test its effectiveness in the lives of children who experience fatherlessness.

Abstract

The text is an expression of words that are genuinely unchangeable in their alternative meaning. Additionally, the term "text" also refers to a manuscript or document that holds a sacred meaning. In the context of socio-historical circumstances during the codification of the Qur'an and the reader's circumstances, this article examines the values of Islamic education found in Surah Al-Fatihah. The collected data is then analyzed using the tahlily method, comparison, and interpretation. The results of this study indicate that there are values of Islamic education present in Surah Al-Fatihah. Firstly, there is the value of faith education, which includes faith in God through His grace, faith in God through the unity of His deeds, faith in God through His grace (ar-rahman and ar-rahim), and faith in the last day (retaliation). Secondly, there is the value of worship education in a broad sense. Thirdly, there is the value of sharia education in a broad sense. Fourthly, there is the educational value of the story. There is a very close relevance between the values of Islamic education and Islamic education itself. Specifically, the value of faith serves as the basis for Islamic education, covering all components of education, including educational goals, the educational curriculum, methods of education, and educational evaluation.

Abstract

Before Islam came, Javanese people believed in sending prayers to the dead so that they would be safe until Nirvana and could rest in peace. After Islam came, this tradition of sending prayers was not immediately eliminated. However, it was given a pattern containing Islamic values by Sunan Kalijaga. So that an acculturation was created between Islam and the culture of sending prayers which was given the name fida. Fida is an activity carried out by Javanese people after death. This activity includes reading the letter al-Ikhlas a thousand times or reading tahlil 70,000/71,000 times which is addressed to the deceased with the aim of avoiding the torment of hellfire and getting rewards. This study attempts to find out the views of the Sumoroto Village community, Kauman District, Ponorogo Regency about fida. (1) How is the practice of fida in the Sumoroto Village community? (2) How do the Sumoroto Village community relate the practice of fida to the text of the hadith. In this study, the author tried to use the observation method, interviews, and documentation as data to support this research. The data analysis used is descriptive qualitative with a phenomenological approach to religion and anthropology of religious symbols by examining the concept of religiosity in the symbols present in the ritual. The results of the study concluded, (1) The meaning of fida for the people of Sumoroto Village is divided into two, namely burdening good deeds and freeing from the torment of hellfire (2) The views of the community about fida are diverse, such as getting rewards and being guaranteed by Allah SWT to avoid hell, as well as the growth of togetherness, helping each other, friendship and giving alms to the environment.
