Abstract

Professional teachers need to be skilled in planning their lesson. One of the activities to plan the lesson is analyzing the competence and teaching material demanded by the curriculum. This article aims to describe the Indonesian pre-service mathematics teachers’ skills in analyzing junior high school mathematics competence. The analysis is important to prepare the appropriate material for their students. This is qualitative research involving 26 pre-service teachers enrolled in the subject of Curriculum Analysis for Junior High School. First, they were assigned to analyze a given basic competence and were then challenged to select the appropriate materials and the indicators when the competence achieved according to Bloom taxonomy. Surprisingly, though there are many reference books available for sources of analysis, the teacher candidates found some difficulties in arranging the topics and composing the appropriate indicators. Some errors found such as the use of unmeasurable verbs, unclear activities, and illogical-irrelevant topics.

Abstract

Javanese context is rich of phenomena potentially used as a starting point to learn mathematics. On the other hand, the Indonesian students’ performance in PISA is consistently low due to the small number of PISA-like problems which can be used to foster the students’ mathematical literacy measured in PISA. Therefore, this research aims to develop a set of PISA-like problems using the Javanese context targeted for 8th-grade students of Junior High School. It is a development study using Plomp’s framework in the stage of need analysis and prototyping. We have successfully developed a prototype of PISA-like mathematics problems using Javanese context. There are six items covering seven basic competences in the 8th-grade of junior high school. The items used various mathematics skills such as communication, representation, mathematization, devising strategies, and reasoning. We could explore some Javanese contexts such as traditional building, transportation, calendar system, community meeting, and historical place. Meanwhile the school mathematics materials include number sequence, Cartesian coordinate, relation, linear function, linear equation system in two variables, and Pythagorean theorem.

Abstract

Mathematical litreracy is defined as individual capacity to reason mathematically, to formulate, to employ, and to interpret mathematics, and to solve problems in the various real-life contexts. These skills are important for students but PISA – an OECD program to assess these skills – reported that the Indonesian students’ performance in mathematical literacy remains low for decades mostly due to instructional factor. It also happened in SMP N 2 Cimerak – a junior high school in Pangandaran, Indonesia, that the students still need a lot of improvement in mathematical literacy skills and their teachers also needs to develop capacity to teach the skills. This research aims to develop a valid and practical lesson plans which could be used to foster mathematical literacy. The lesson plans also include powerpoint presentation slides, students’ worksheet, teaching materials, and assessment instrument. It was a modified version of R&D introduced by Plomp which consist of stages: initial investigation, design, construction, evaluation, and final product. In the evaluation stage, we involved four experts to validate the lesson plans and 26 junior high school students to test the lesson plans, and revised them accordingly. The results suggest that the lesson plans are valid with the score of 4.46 (lesson plan), 3.96 (PPT slides), 4.38 (worksheet), 4.00 (teaching materials), dan 4.39 (assessment). The validity could be explained from the accommodation of mathematical literacy domains such as contexts (job and society, local environment maps), content (change and relationship, Cartesian coordinate), process (manifested in the problem-based learning), and the skills (communication, mathematization, representation, reasoning, devising strategies, using symbols, and using mathematics tools). The testing also resulted in 84.19 score of students’ positive responses and 3.92 (good) score of practicality. Moreover, the lessons also have potential effects in fostering students’ mathematical literacy viewed from the observation of mathematical literacy process, which suggest that 3.8% students in low performance, 53.8% students in intermediate performance, and 42.3% students in high performance. Therefore, the lesson plans were valid, practical, and having potential effect in fostering students’ mathematical literacy.

Abstract

Students' collaboration and mindset are essential aspects that must be developed in the physics learning process to foster strong self-regulation. This research aims to enhance the collaboration character and growth mindset of students by implementing the project-based learning (PjBL) model assisted by google sites. The research is a classroom action research conducted over two cycles in class X3 at Muhammadiyah SHS of Bantul. Data collection techniques involve non-test methods using an observation sheet. Data regarding collaboration and growth mindset characteristics were analyzed by calculating percentages and comparing them with the assessment categories obtained through standard deviation calculations. The results indicate a significant improvement in collaboration character, increasing from 53% (poor) in cycle I to 88% (very good) in cycle II. Additionally, the growth mindset improved from 56% (enough) in cycle I to 82% (good) in cycle II. These findings demonstrate that the PjBL model, assisted by google sites, has a positive impact on students' collaboration character and growth mindset

Abstract

This study aims to analyze students' mathematical communication skills based on their self-efficacy during the covid-19 pandemic. The method used is descriptive qualitative. The population was VII grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Bantul. The purposive sampling technique was used to select samples. The subject was grouped based on their self-efficacy with high, medium, and low categories to be tested and interviewed about their mathematical communication skills. The instrument in this study was a self-efficacy questionnaire, a test of mathematical communication skills, and an interview guideline. The triangulation technique was carried out by comparing the mathematical communication skills test results with the interview. The result of mathematical communication skills during the Covid-19 pandemic are not in line with their level of self-efficacy. High self-efficacy does not necessarily make students have high mathematical communication skills. The factor causing the misalignment is the fact that the online learning process carried out during the Covid-19 pandemic does not enough facilitate students to hone their mathematical communication skills, both oral and written.

Abstract

This research was motivated by the problems found at SMP N 1 Bantul, a junior high school in Bantul regency, Yogyakarta, which were obtained by conducting interviews with mathematics teachers. We found that there were still many students who had not received good stimulation in cognitive development at the concrete stages so that when entering the formal stages students have difficulty to make reasoning into more complex problems where this reasoning will affect students' mathematical literacy skills. Besides, they also lack of teaching materials especially in grade 7 due to using the new curriculum. One of which are the material of polyhedron which only explains concepts in general and does not explain further than the elements, content, and spatial components as well as the visualization of geometric shapes. This study aims to develop pop-up book teaching materials on polyhedron to improve the students' mathematical literacy skills. This development research used the analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation (ADDIE) model involving students of class VII-A in the testing. Before conducting testing in the classroom, the teaching materials, pretest, and posttest were validated by experts. The results are: (1) scores of material experts and media experts gave a valid result; (2) the students and teachers responses to teaching materials gave practical testimonies; and (3) there was an average increase from pretest to posttest results at 25.49 points.
