Abstract

This study re-examines the classical interpretations of nushūz and ḍaraba found in QS. An-Nisā’ [4]:34, 128 and explores their relevance to domestic violence issues in Indonesia. The research method that was employed is a literature study that explores the words nushūz and wadribū (ḍaraba: to hit) in QS. An-Nisā'[4]:34 and 128 through the commentaries of al-Ṭabarī, al- Qurṭubī, and Ibn Kathīr from the perspective of gender equality. The findings indicate that al-Ṭabarī views nushūz as a wife’s arrogance, al-Qurṭubī interprets it as animosity between spouses, and Ibn Kathīr regards it as the wife neglecting her obligations. In QS. An-Nisā’ [4]:128, nushūz is understood as the husband’s negligence or withdrawal from his wife. Meanwhile, waḍribūhunna in QS. An-Nisā’ [4]:34 is interpreted by al-Ṭabarī as a non-harmful physical measure, by al-Qurṭubī as a light, corrective action, and by Ibn Kathīr as a blow that causes no injury. Although these classical interpretations often depict the wife as the erring party and the husband as being in the right—a stance that risks perpetuating unequal power dynamics—the Qur’an itself underscores the principle of equality between men and women. In this light, nushūz should apply to both spouses, reflecting the possibility that either partner could be at fault. Al-Qurṭubī’s understanding of nushūz as mutual hatred is more compatible with notions of gender equity. Additionally, interpreting ḍaraba as “offering guidance” or “providing a positive example” is more appropriate than viewing it as a physical strike, which can escalate into domestic violence. This reinterpretation, therefore, holds promise for fostering more equitable marital relationships in contemporary society.

Abstract

This paper analyzes comprehensively how the pattern of Muslim religious behavior in dealing with pandemics such as smallpox, cholera, SARS, Ebola, Covid-19, monkeypox and so on. The method used is thematic maudhu'i by collecting the words bala' and tha'un in the hadith. The results of this study produce the concept of religious behavior for Muslims based on the hadith of the prophet Muhammad SAW to deal with the pandemic. The results of the study are as follows: In facing trials in the form of pandemic such as Covid-19 that still persists in the soceity is by patient, namely patient in action in the form of vaccines and application of health protocols then patient in attitude that is surrender and sincerity towards trials and leave everything to Allah SWT. (al-Baqarah/2:155) The Prophet gave good news to those who are patient in facing the pandemic, if they die, they will be rewarded with martyrdom (Sahih Bukhri: 2.618). Muslims must maintain a clean and healthy environment to increase immunity so that they are not easily attacked or contracted by disease. (Sahih Bukhari:1.747) Regional quarantine or lockdown has been taught by the Prophet as an effort to stop the spread of the pandemic (Sahih Bukhari:3.214) after trying hard physically, then praying for protection from Allah SWT from all kinds of bad trials (Sahih Bukhari 5871), Sunan Abu Dawud: 1329).

Abstract

This paper examines how the digital civility (morality) of contemporary Indonesian Muslim interaction on social media. The gap in Muslim behaviour on social media with the teachings of the Qur'an is caused by negative prejudice or sadistic behaviour; therefore, the values of Qur'anic digital civility are degraded. The research method used is a literature review examining Muslim interaction on social media such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Contextual hermeneutics is used to analyze the interaction patterns of Muslims on social media. This research shows that Muslim interaction patterns on social media fall into the disassociation category, leading to incivility. One of incivility is flaming (verbal attacks in the form of blasphemy and insults); this is proven by hateful posts on social media. This behaviour pattern in social media is far from Qur'anic values which call for good speech, honesty and avoiding hoaxes; the words used must be courteous, put forward the principles of appropriateness and decency, and smooth and soft. These values of Qur'anic teaching are called digital Qur'anic civility

Abstract

The phenomenon of digital tabarruj has become a pressing social phenomenon in the modern visual era because it reveals the tension between religious piety and online self-expression. Contemporary tafsir studies attempt to address this issue by recontextualizing the prohibition of tabarruj as a moral ethic for digital culture. This research aims to reinterpret QS. Al-Ahzab/33:33 and QS. An-Nur/24:31 through a combination of Tafsir Al-Maraghi and Fazlur Rahman's Double Movement theory, which methodologically allows for a connection between the normative meaning of the text and the current social context. The research method uses a qualitative approach based on literature studies and digital literature. The research findings indicate that the moral principles of the verse, from the context of the Jahiliyyah era to the digital age, emphasize simplicity, honor, and self-control in adornment. The novelty of this study lies in the application of double-movement hermeneutics to articulate the ethics of Muslim women's adornment in digital space, while also offering theoretical implications for the development of contextual interpretation and practical implications for the formation of digital ethics literacy based on Islamic values of modesty.

Abstract

This article aims to explain and analyze the relationship between the recitation of Qur’anic verses and the physiological response of basil plants. Using an exploratory research type, this article examines the possibility of the influence of Qur’anic recitation on living beings other than humans, while also formulating a Qur’anic concept regarding this phenomenon within the framework of scientific interpretation (tafsir sains). The method used in this research is an experimental method by comparing two basil plant objects, namely one plant that is exposed to the recitation of the Qur’an and another plant that is not exposed to such recitation. The research process was carried out for 15 days, starting from June 3, 2025, until June 17, 2025. The results of the study show that the plant that was recited with Qur’anic verses physiologically had leaves that appeared perfectly wide, with no blackened leaves, no small holes in the leaves, and no leaves that were rotten. In contrast, the basil plant that was not exposed to the recitation of the Qur’an showed poorer conditions, indicated by curved leaves, the appearance of blackened parts of the leaves, and the presence of small holes on the surface of the leaves. These findings indicate that the concept of syifā’ in the Qur’an can be interpreted as a form of healing or remedy for various disturbances, which in the context of this study is reflected in the condition of plant leaves that are wilted, blackened, or damaged so that the plant can grow more healthily and optimally. This article contributes to enriching the body of interdisciplinary studies between Qur’anic studies and science, particularly regarding the possible influence of Qur’anic recitation on living beings other than humans.

Abstract

Islamic university students face challenges in searching for digital references, particularly in utilizing available e-resources, both online and in university libraries. A lack of digital literacy skills, especially in accessing Arabic-language sources, poses a significant obstacle to their academic progress. This study aims to analyze the level of digital literacy skills among Islamic university students in finding digital references and to identify the challenges they encounter. This research employs a quantitative approach with a descriptive method. Data were collected through questionnaires, observations, and document analysis. The study population consists of Islamic university students, with validity testing conducted using the Pearson product-moment formula and reliability testing using Cronbach’s alpha. The findings indicate that students' digital literacy skills in utilizing e-resources are relatively high, with an average total score of 3.25 on a 0.8 scale. This score falls within the moderate category (2.6–3.4). Nevertheless, significant challenges remain in utilizing digital references, particularly in Arabic-language materials, highlighting the need for university policies to enhance students' digital literacy skills, particularly in religious faculties. The study concludes that strengthening digital literacy strategies is essential for improving access to and utilization of academic references in Islamic higher education institutions.

Abstract

Paradigma amali berusaha menggeser nilai-nilai teosentris dalam al-Qur’an menuju wilayah antroposentris. Kata Kunci : antroposentris, code of conduct,  tafsir amali, teosentris,  AbstractThis study aims to present a new paradigm in the world of interpretation that is amali (applied) interpretation. This interpretation is one of the variants of contemporary interpretations where the validity and style of interpretation is empiric in the field. The research method used is literature study, which is collecting various types of literature related to amali interpretations then analyzed and formulated. Amali interpretation is a derivative of the idea of applied (amali)Islam by Muslim A. Kadir, Professor of Islamic philosophy at IAIN Kudus. amali paradigm tries to shift the theocentric values in the Qur'an to the anthropocentric space. Amali interpretation is a paradigm that explores the values of Qur'an in dialogue with the empirical zone. The results of the dialogue resulted in a formulation called the code of conduct in behaving. The formulation of code of conduct is the product of amali interpretation. An example of application an amali interpretation is a study of Qur’anic verses related to the environment by tracing the keywords human, damaged and ihsan in the Qur'an with the help of mu'jam and the results are as follows: Humans are forbidden to carry out ecological damage (al-Araf/7: 56/ al-Rum/30: 41) and the standard of behavior (code of conduct) is not to carry out various kinds of environmental pollution activities. Humans are given a mandate as custodians of the earth's ecosystem (Hud/11:61) while the standard of behavior (code of conduct) is to maintain the sustainability of flora and fauna from extinction. Humans are ordered to do good deed ihsan to the environment (Q.S. an-Nahl/16:90) while the standard of behavior (code of conduct) is to use nature but also to protect it by planting (conservation) so that its sustainability is maintained. Keywords: anthropocentric, code of conduct, amali interpretation, theocentric,

Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of cyberbullying on social media through a contextual approach, focusing on the interpretation of relevant Qur'anic verses and their application to modern digital behavior. The research identifies that the majority of cyberbullying cases on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and TikTok take the form of verbal harassment, including flaming, impersonation, trickery, and denigration. The research method is library research, with primary data sourced from the Qur'anic term “sakhara” (humiliating or mocking), This term is further interpreted using both classical and contemporary exegeses. The paradigm used is contextual hermeneutic approach. The results of this study show that: 1) Cyberbullying on social media is found on Instagram, Facebook, X, and TikTok. The cyberbullying patterns in the majority of social media are verbal harassment with the aim of insulting and humiliating someone. 2) The term sakhara is the root word that is closest to the meaning of cyberbullying because it has insulting and degrading meanings. The the word sakhara is mentioned 32 times in the Qur'an. Three main verses are selected to be discussed: Q. S. al-Hujurat [49]:11, Q. S. at-Taubah [9]:79, and Q.S. al-An’am [6]:10. The verses reveal a clear prohibition against mocking and degrading others. These verses highlight the importance of maintaining respect and dignity, even in the face of mockery, and the need for resilience and faith in the face of such challenges. The study concludes that insults and mockery should not be normalized, as they can lead to harmful consequences, including the emergence of cyberbullying, which has significant negative effects on individuals.
