Abstract

OPEFB is one source of natural fiber-based composites which have the potential to become activated carbon. This study aims to synthesize and characterize the activated carbon/alginate -Cu composite. The characterization used in this study is FTIR. The results of this study The synthesis of activated carbon/alginate -Cu composites began with a process of carbonization and activation with H3PO4 to produce Activated Carbon. Alginate using commercial alginate. Furthermore, the three ingredients were mixed until homogeneous and put into a 0.1M CuSO4 solution to produce beads. The characterization of FTIR characterization on the activated carbon/alginate-Cu composite contained the functional group OH group, triple C bond from stretching alkyne, C=C aromatic group, C-H alkane group, C-O group , the P=O stretching vibration of the P-O-C group and the alcohol OH group expressing the active carbon; there are functional groups of hydroxyl (OH), carboxyl, carbonyl, and C-O-C and –COOH bonds which represent alginate and there are OH functional groups, stretching C-H bonds, C-O stretching, stretching C-C. The KALg Cu13 sample had a peak at a wavelength of 2838.79 Cm-1 Where the four samples show the presence of C≡N groups

Abstract

Research on the slow release kinetics of Fe(III) ions from Activated Carbon/Alginate-Fe(III) composites or abbreviated as K/A-Fe(III) has been carried out. The aim of this research was to synthesize K/A-Fe(III) composite as a material that has the potential to become a slow release micronutrient fertilizer and to study the kinetics of slow release of Fe(III) ions from the composite. The K/A-Fe(III) composite was synthesized by mixing alginate suspension and activated carbon (alginate: activated carbon weight ratio = 1:3 and 3:1) until homogeneous. Composite grains were characterized using Fourier Transformed Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, the kinetics of Fe(III) release from the three composite variations found that KAlg31 composite showed more absorption and release of Fe ions than KAlg13.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui aktivitas antibakeri kombinasi ekstrak secang dan jahe. Uji aktivitas antibakteri dilakukan terhadap dua bakteri yaitu bakteri Escherichia coli dan Staphylococcus aureus, meliputi uji difusi cakram kertas, penentuan minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) dan minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) dengan metode mikrodilusi. Pengujian ini menggunakan perbandingan ekstrak 1:1, 1:2 serta 2:1. Kombinasi ekstrak secang dan jahe memiliki aktivitas antibakteri terhadap kedua bakteri uji terlihat dengan munculnya zona beningnya. Aktivitas antibakteri yang kuat terhadap bakteri E. coli ditunjukkan oleh kombinasi ekstrak secang dan jahe pada perbandingan 1:1 dengan nilai MIC 39,6 μg/ml sedangkan pada bakteri S. aureus ditunjukkan oleh kombinasi ekstrak secang dan jahe dengan perbandingan 2:1 dengan nilai MIC 78,1 μg/ml.

Abstract

Oil palm empty fruit bunch (EFB) is a biomass waste containing lignocellulose that has the potential to be used as activated carbon to adsorb heavy metals such as Cu(II). This study aims to compare the adsorption performance of Cu(II) ions from three types of TKKS-based adsorbents, namely pure activated carbon (A.C), Fe-Cu metal modified activated carbon (A.C-Fe-Cu), and activated carbon composite with Cu(TAC)₂ (A.C-Cu(TAC)₂). Data were obtained from two previous studies and analyzed using first- and second-order pseudo-kinetic models, as well as Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. Results showed that all adsorbents followed a two-order pseudo-kinetic model with R² ≥ 0.998, indicating a chemisorption mechanism. A.C-Fe-Cu showed the highest maximum adsorption capacity (389.47 mg/g) and the best fit to both isotherm models, while A.C-Cu(TAC)₂ showed suboptimal results. Thus, the modification of TKKS with Fe-Cu metal synergistically increases the effectiveness of adsorption on Cu(II) ions and has potential for wastewater treatment applications.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the stages in the process of making activated carbon, synthesis of porous polymer composites Cu(TAC) and activated carbon composites (KA-Cu(TAC) for adsorption of dissolved ammonia (NH4OH). To know the characterization results of activated carbon and KA- Cu(TAC), as well as knowing the optimum mass, concentration, and contact time of activated carbon KA-Cu(TAC) for the adsorption of dissolved ammonia. The research stages started from Empty Oil Palm Bunches (EFB) used as biosorbents for carbon production at 500oC. The resulting product was activated with H3PO4, then modified with porous polymer Cu(TAC) to make a composite. The KA-Cu(TAC) composite was synthesized by reflux method. Then MOFs, activated carbon and KA-Cu(TAC) composite were characterized by BET. The BET characterization results showed that the successfully synthesized KA-Cu(TAC) composite experienced an increase in surface area.In the NH4OH adsorption process the optimum mass efficiency on activated carbon still increased at 8 grams while the KA-Cu(TAC) composite obtained an efficiency of 36, 6% and optimally at a mass of 4 g. At variations in concentration, the efficiency of the two samples still decreased. And the optimum time efficiency obtained in the NH4OH adsorption process with activated carbon was 70% and the KA-Cu(TAC) composite was 86.6%, both samples were equally optimal at 75 minutes

Abstract

The increasing palm oil production in Indonesia contributes to higher agricultural waste, particularly Empty Fruit Bunches (EFB). This waste can be processed into activated carbon as an adsorbent to remove Fe(II) ions from Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME). This study reviews two EFB-based adsorbents: Fe-Cu modified activated carbon and a composite of activated carbon with Copper-TAC Metal Organic Frameworks (Cu(TAC)₂). Adsorption kinetics data show that the pseudo-second-order model fits best, with the highest regression coefficient (R² = 0.99637) found in the Cu(TAC)₂ composite, indicating a chemisorption mechanism. Adsorption equilibrium analysis using Freundlich isotherm revealed that while all materials fit the model, plain activated carbon had an unfavorable 1/n value (>1), suggesting weak interaction between adsorbent and adsorbate. Based on kinetic and isotherm analysis, the Cu(TAC)₂ composite was more effective for Fe(II) adsorption than Fe-Cu or unmodified activated carbon.

Abstract

Indonesia, particularly North Sumatra, is a major producer of palm oil, generating significant waste such as empty fruit bunches (EFB) and ammonia-rich wastewater. Ammonia pollution poses serious environmental risks if not treated properly. This study explores the potential of three types of adsorbents—Fe-Cu modified activated carbon, AC-Cu(TAC)₂ composite, and unmodified activated carbon—for ammonia adsorption. Activated carbon was synthesized from EFB and further modified using Fe-Cu and Cu(TAC)₂. Adsorption experiments were conducted with variations in adsorbent mass, contact time, and NH₄OH concentration. The results showed that Fe-Cu modified activated carbon had the highest ammonia removal efficiency (90%), while the AC-Cu(TAC)₂ composite had the highest adsorption capacity. Equilibrium analysis revealed that the AC-Cu(TAC)₂ composite fit both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models (R² = 1), suggesting both monolayer and heterogeneous adsorption. The unmodified activated carbon followed the Langmuir model (R² = 0.9498), while Fe-Cu modified activated carbon did not fit either model. Kinetic studies indicated that Fe-Cu modified activated carbon followed a pseudo-first-order model (R² = 0.9936), implying physisorption, whereas both AC-Cu(TAC)₂ and unmodified activated carbon followed pseudo-second-order models (R² = 0.9779 and 0.9869), indicating chemisorption. These findings highlight the promising potential of modified EFB-based adsorbents for ammonia removal in wastewater treatment applications.

Abstract

Pembelajaran IPA merupakan salah satu model penerapan kurikulum yang dianjurkan untuk diterapkan mulai pada pendidikan dasar. Materi dari pembelajaran IPA sebaiknya diaktualisasikan melalui peragaan, bentuk percobaan atau demonstrasi yang dilakukan di Laboratorium. Pelaksanaan praktikum IPA dengan KIT praktikum menjadi lebih mudah dan dapat mengurangi risiko kecelakaan laboratorium. Salah satu tugas pendidik adalah mengembangkan potensi siswa namun permasalahan yang dihadapi guru adalah belum bisa berinovasi supaya proses pembelajaran IPA dilaksanakan di Laboratorium saat mendapatkan materi yang semestinya dilakukan dengan metode praktikum. Guru-guru di SMP IT Nurul Fadhilah selama ini melakukan proses peembelajaran hanya sebatas teori di dalam kelas, hal ini dikarenakan keterbatasan akses dan peralatan belum memadai yang menunjang praktikum IPA. Hal ini dirasakan oleh guru saat berinteraksi dengan siswa memberikan contoh penerapan praktikum IPA yang hanya sebatas teori. Pelatihan ini bertujuan untuk membekali guru dan siswa dalam mengembangkan kreativitasnya dalam mengintegrasikan penggunaan KIT IPA pada pembelajaran IPA dan metode praktikum akan membantu mempercepat pemahaman terhadap pembelajaran IPA serta memberikan langkah kongkret dalam pemanfaatan laboratorium sebagai tempat belajar yang menyenangkan.

Abstract

In the context of higher education, the digital era and advancements in technology have revolutionized learning systems, necessitating an understanding of student preferences for online, offline, and hybrid methods. This study aims to investigate these preferences and the associated reasons behind them. Data were collected through a Google Form survey administered to 110 students of chemistry department, chemistry education study program, Universitas Negeri Medan, complemented by semi-structured interviews with a subset of participants. Results reveal that 9.1% of students prefer online learning due to its flexibility and cost-effectiveness, 55.5% favor offline (face-to-face) learning for its effectiveness in understanding material and fostering interaction, and 35.5% opt for a combination of both methods, which is perceived as the optimal balance. The findings underscore the importance of adapting learning methods to enhance educational effectiveness, addressing challenges such as internet access, device limitations, and transportation costs.

Abstract

This study aim is to know the results of the synthesis of silver nanoparticles from quercetin and Scurrula ferruginea (Roxb. Ex Jack) danser as well as its potential as an antioxidant and anticancer. The solvent used in the maceration extraction method in this research is the polar solvent methanol. Isolation and purification of thick extract compounds from coffee parasite leaves were carried out using liquid vacuum chromatography (CVC) and gravity column chromatography (GCC) methods. Silver (Ag) nanoparticle is made with the stirrer method at a speed of 1500 rpm for 60 minutes at a temperature of 70o C. Silver nanoparticle solution was produced and then characterized using FTIR (Fourier Transform Infra Red) and PSA (Particles Size Analyzer). PSA results analysis using extract coffee parasite size 214 nm particles, whereas using flavonoid isolate quercetin confirmed size 29 nm. FTIR showed that there was a stretching vibration of the OH group at a wave number of 3229.25 cm-1, the C=O function at the wave number 1637.87 cm-1, and the CO functional group at the wave number 1016.31 cm-1. Antioxidant test using the DPPH method was carried out in silver nanoparticle solution using extract Scurrula ferruginea (Roxb. Ex Jack) danser and with quercetin obtained an IC50 value of around 115.4 and 114.9 this result describes as moderate level of antioxidants. Even though the nanoparticle anticancer test was very weak, overall, the synthesis of silver nanoparticles using flavonoid isolates was better than using extracts from coffee parasite leaves.
