Abstract

Abstract

Aging is a problem for everyone, especially those who have entered middle age and above. Aging can be caused by various factors, namely factors that come from within the body and from outside the body. One of the extrinsic factors were sun exposure, temperature / humidity and free radicals. Skin aging is mostly caused by free radicals, one of which is sunlight radiation. This study aims to produce a serum preparation that functions as an antioxidant with a combination of tomato extract and watermelon rind. The antioxidant activity of tomato extract, watermelon rind extract and combination extract was carried out using the DPPH method, then the anti aging serum was formulated using hydroxy ethyl cellulose, glycerin, DMDM hydantoin, ethoxy diglycol and aqua DM. Evaluation of serum preparations includes physical evaluation (organoleptic examination, dispersibility, homogeneity, viscosity, irritation test), chemistry (pH), and microbiology. Data were analyzed using one way Anova, the results differed significantly when the p-value was less than 0.05 (p <0.05). The results showed that the combination extract had a better IC50 value of 59.19 ppm, tomato extract 69.89 ppm, watermelon rind extract 79.29 ppm. Combined serum preparation at F1 (T: S / 1: 1) IC50 value was 97.37 ppm, F2 (T: S / 1: 2) 80.70 ppm, F3 (T: S / 2: 1) 69.81 ppm so it is included in the category of strong antioxidants.

Abstract

Acne is a process of chronic inflammation of the sebaceous glands in the skin caused by the bacteria Propionibacterium acnes. Approximately 80-100% incidence of acne occurs in adolescents. One solution is to use an antibacterial agent called catechins. It can be easily obtained from green tea, which has high catechin content. The amount of catechins used as antibacterial substances in green tea can also be increased by fermentation. In addition, lactic acid-fermented green tea can inhibit the growth of P. acnes. This study aimed to produce green tea kombucha face toner with anti-acne activity and good physical stability. This study included an experimental research. The research population was in the form of antibacterial compounds in face toner. The sample was green tea kombucha, which showed antibacterial activity at a concentration of 50% with an 18 mm Diameter of Inhibition Zone (DIZ). And the best formula is F1 with 0.84 mm DIZ, has a pH of 4 which is safe for the skin, clear solution, has clean power, it is also stable during storage at 30o and 40oC, but it has a rather disagreeable scent of toner. Abstract

Dengue fever is an infectious disease which is transmitted by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes and commonly occurs in Indonesia. The use of natural ingredients for mosquito repellent is becoming a trend. Kecombrang (Etlingera elatior (Jack)) is known as a medicinal plant which contains alkaloids, saponins, tannins, phenolics, flavonoids, triterpenoids, steroids, and glycosides. Beluntas (Pluchea indica) contains tannins, alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, saponins and essential oils. This study aims to develop mosquito repellent lotion using combined leaf extracts of E. elatior and P. indica at different ratios (1:1; 1:2; 2:1). The materials used in this study were E. elatior and P. indica leaves, Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, 96% ethanol, stearic acid, triethanolamine, white oil, methyl paraben, cetyl alcohol, and distilled water. The repellent activity is tested using a standard method of WHO, comparing control group and treatment group, repeating for four times, then the protection level was calculated. The three formulas of lotion fulfilled both physical and chemical requirements and had a repellent activity of above 80%. The formulae of F3, a lotion containing both E. elatior and P. indica leaf extracts of 2:1, gave the highest protection of 88.1%.

Abstract

The peel of pineapple (Ananas comosus (L.) Merr.) and mango (Mangifera indica L.) contain polyphenolics that have antioxidant activity and tyrosinase inhibitor. Both of these activities are useful for skin lightening treatments. The purpose of this study was to determine the value of the antioxidant and tyrosinase inhibitor activity of each pineapple peel extract (EKBN) and mango peel extract (EKBM), and their combination with a ratio of 2:1; 1:1; 1:2. The combination that gives the best value for antioxidant activity and tyrosinase inhibitor may be made for cosmetic preparations. The antioxidant activity of each extract and its combination was determined by the DPPH method, after the antioxidant IC50 value was obtained, then the tyrosinase enzyme inhibitory activity was tested. The results showed that EKBN; EKBM; the combination of EKBN and EKBM with a ratio of 2:1, 1:1, 1:2 has antioxidant activity with IC50 values: 618.42 ppm, 10.29 ppm, 30.73 ppm, 20.20 ppm and 18.04 ppm, has tyroinase inhibitory activity with IC50 of 5,019.98 ppm, 930.85 ppm, 1.992.31 ppm, 2.070.89 ppm and 2.839.75 ppm, respectively. There is a correlation between the IC50 of the combined extract and its weight. the combination of EKBN and EKBM, 1:2 gave the best antioxidant activity results with an IC50 value of 18.04 ppm (very strong) and the combination of EKBN and EKBM, 2:1 gave tyrosinase inhibitory activity with an IC50 value of tyrosinase 1.992.31 ppm. The combination of EKBN and EKBM, 1:2 may be developed further as cosmetic preparations such as serum, liquid spray, and others.

Abstract

The torch ginger plant (Etlingera elatior (Jack) R.M.Sm.) is a member of the Zingiberaceae family and is frequently called kecombrang in Java. This plant has been used as a traditional medicine and food flavor enhancer but is limited as a cosmetic ingredient. Flavonoids and phenolic compounds are examples of secondary metabolites found in this plant. Most flavonoid compounds show sunscreen activity due to the chromophore groups (conjugated single double bonds) capable of absorbing UV A and UV B radiation. According to BPOM Decree No. 17/2022, only listed ingredients in Annex 4 are considered as UV filters but natural herbal compounds with antioxidant properties are applied as sunscreens. This study focused on the in vitro assessment of antioxidant and photoprotective activity from E. elatior leaf extract. First, extracting a 70% ethanol extraction of torch ginger leaves, then evaluated the extract’s quality, its antioxidant activity via the DPPH assay, and its in-vitro photoprotective activity using a UV spectrophotometer. The results showed that the extract from E. elatior leaves possesses remarkably strong antioxidant properties, as shown by its IC50 value of 47.46 μg/mL, and the extract at concentration of 1000 μg/mL provided photoprotection activity calculated as an SPF of 24.05 (ultra protection), erythema transmission value of 1.18% (extra protection) and pigmentation transmission value of 3.49% (total block). It can be concluded that torch ginger leaf extract has high potential as a cosmetic natural ingredient because of very strong antioxidant activity and photoprotective ultra protection.
