Abstract

Cultural acculturation and religiosity strongly influence the creation of Madura Batik. The pattern of batik motifs is interesting to study as a dynamically developing cultural product. There is a process of cultural communication in batik, with motifs as the medium. Even though there are many studies on Madura Batik, it is still rare to study motifs, especially from a visual communication perspective. The study was conducted to find out the meaning of Batik motifs. The exploratory qualitative study method was used with a combination of direct observation and literature review. Research sources come from craftsmen, boutique owners, and Madurese cultural figures. Charles Sanders Peirce's Semiotic Analysis is used to examine the object of research on batik motifs. The results found that there were elements of acculturation in the patterns of batik motifs. The process of acculturation occurred from the Hindu-Buddhist era until the modern era. The Islamic aspect is contained in the pattern of batik motifs with the stylization process.

Abstract

Live streaming has rapidly become a transformative feature within the landscape of online shopping, not only serving as an interactive marketing tool but also reshaping consumer decision-making processes in the digital marketplace. Far beyond a mere add-on, live streaming represents a disruptive innovation that significantly alters consumer–vendor engagement and accelerates the evolution of e-commerce ecosystems. To gain a deeper understanding of this phenomenon, the present study employs the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) as a theoretical lens to investigate the drivers of consumer adoption and sustained usage of live streaming in online shopping contexts. Data were collected from 150 active users of live streaming features through purposive accidental sampling and analyzed using path analysis with AMOS software. The results provide strong empirical evidence that the TAM constructs Perceived Usefulness (PU), Perceived Ease of Use (PEU), Attitude Toward Using (ATU), Behavioral Intention to Use (BIU), and Actual System Use (AU) are all significantly and positively interrelated. These findings underscore the strategic importance of consumer perceptions of utility and ease of use in fostering favorable attitudes, strengthening behavioral intentions, and translating into actual system usage. This research not only validates TAM in the context of live streaming but also offers critical implications for global e-commerce stakeholders and technology developers by highlighting how interactive features can be optimized to enhance consumer engagement, trust, and long-term digital marketplace sustainability.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the patterns of interpersonal communication in phonics learning for early childhood at Bright Cubs Learning Center. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, using in-depth interviews with three phonics teachers and two parents. This research applies Social Learning Theory and Symbolic Interactionism to explain how communication between teachers and students shapes learning experiences and children’s perceptions of letters and sounds. The findings reveal that warm, responsive, and interactive communication patterns play a crucial role in building children's self-confidence and facilitating their understanding of phonics. Symbolic communication expressed through facial expressions, body movements, and vocal intonation provides meaningful learning cues for children in learning to read. The interaction fosters not only early literacy skills but also the broader development of children's interpersonal communication. These findings highlight the importance of the quality of interpersonal relationships in early childhood education, particularly in the phonics learning context.

Abstract

The high incidence of fires in Jakarta demands the Fire and Rescue Department of DKI Jakarta to maintain effective internal communication strategies. This study aims to examine how these strategies impact the department’s emergency fire response. The research employed a qualitative approach using a case study method, with data collected through in-depth interviews with six department personnel and three fire-affected residents, field observations, and documentation. Analysis was based on Karl Weick’s Organizational Information Theory, focusing on the processes of enactment, selection, and retention. The findings reveal that internal communication strategies include rapid reporting via 112 and nearby posts, information validation via telephone, use of color codes and operational terms such as “76” and “86,” and coordination through handy talkies across teams and command levels. A tiered command structure is applied based on the first responder, followed by a unified command system at the fire scene. Communication barriers identified include differences in perception, time pressure, signal disruption in areas like high-rise buildings or basements (blind spots), and environmental constraints such as traffic congestion or narrow alleyways. Nevertheless, the structured and adaptive communication strategy effectively reduces equivocality and accelerates decision-making during emergencies. This study contributes to organizational communication literature in the context of emergency response and offers insights into the importance of internal communication in managing critical information within public service organizations.

Abstract

When viewed openly, LGBT people are a separate behavior regarding sexual forms which consist of and focus on lesbian (sexual relations between women), gay (male-to-male sexual relations), bisexual (can have good sexual relations with male or female), and transgender (people who change gender because they feel they have found their identity). The existence of adherents of LGBT people in solving their problems can be seen and used by studying the theory of cultural convergence theory developed by Barnett & Kincaid. The theory of basic transformation theory can present a communication process that occurs by involving two or more individuals or groups sharing information that aims to create mutual understanding between them about something that exists in their lives. In the theory of cultural convergence, efforts to present a complete and comprehensive understanding between the LGBT community and those who are against LGBT people can present positive communication interactions with each other, argue, mutual understanding will be approached but never perfectly achieved. That is, some problems occur when two or more people exchange information, maybe some convergent people will be more able to present a comprehensive understanding between them in the community.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to deepen the understanding of mental health issues prevalent in society, particularly among higher education students, resulting from the show-off culture on social media. Technological advancements, especially on highly visual platforms like Instagram, have reshaped how students perceive and experience mental well-being.   Methods: Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, this research analyzes the lived experiences of two college students in North Jakarta, Gladys and Viola. The use of social media, particularly Instagram, has become an integral part of adolescents' daily lives, as reflected in the experiences of Gladys and Viola, who have both used Instagram for over five years. Data were collected through in-depth interviews structured with theoretical frameworks related to mental health to understand their psychological responses to social media interactions.   Findings: The interviews revealed that both informants initially derived satisfaction and validation from likes and comments. However, this evolved into a source of significant distress when engagement declined. Both subjects experienced symptoms of anxiety, inferiority, and social withdrawal due to upward social comparison and the pressure to maintain a curated online persona. The study found that their recovery required professional psychological intervention and a conscious restriction of social media usage to regain emotional stability.   Originality: This research contributes to the Social Comparison Theory by providing empirical evidence from the Indonesian context, specifically highlighting how the aestheticization of life on Instagram accelerates the transition from validation-seeking behavior to diagnosed mental health disorders among youth, underscoring the urgency for digital literacy and authentic content creation.
