Abstract

The water pollution caused by diamond mine activities can kill aquatic life. In this work, we used phytoremediation and filtration to treat pond water polluted by the tailings of a diamond mine located in South Kalimantan, Indonesia. Einchhornia crassipes (water hyacinth) was utilized as the biomass for the phytoremediation process. Gravel (10–15 mm) and sand (0.1–1 mm) were used as filter media in the simple filtration setup, using an up-flow system (bottom to top). In the experiment, 16 L of diamond tailing water was poured into five phytoremediation reactors (each 60 L in volume), which were then tested over seven days. A pretreatment analysis of the tailings water showed that its biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) of 8.9 mg L−1 and chemical oxygen demand (COD) of 22 mg L−1 exceeded the national maximum standards of 2 mg L−1 and 10 mg L−1, respectively. The experimental results demonstrate that both phytoremediation and filtration could increase the dissolved oxygen concentration (4.7 mg.L−1) and reduce the BOD (3.2 mg.L−1), COD (6.5 mg.L−1), Fe (0.6 mg.L−1), Mn (0.16 mg.L−1), and ammonia (0.63 mg.L−1) concentrations from those measured in the raw diamond-mine-tailings water. The phytoremediation performance was better than that of filtration. The COD values were successfully reduced to the permissible limit, although the other parameters still failed to meet the government water quality regulation requirements.

Abstract

There are several processes involved in the treatment of clean water, namely filtering, sedimentation, coagulation, flocculation, filtration, and disinfection. These processes are utilized by PAM Bandarmasih at the Water Treatment Plant II (IPA II) situated on Jalan Pramuka. The objective of the research is to analyze the quality of water distributed to the North Zone of Banjarmasin by PAM Bandarmasih. The research location was intentionally chosen (purposive sampling) within the Bandarmasih PAM area, encompassing the raw water sources from the Tabuk River, IPA 1, and IPA 2 in the North Banjarmasin zone. The Tabuk River watershed serves as a tributary of the Martapura River, which is utilized as a water source to fulfill the daily needs of the people. The data analysis technique employed to address the research objectives involves analyzing the quality of distributed clean water using the storet method. Evaluation of the water quality distributed to customers in the North Banjarmasin PAM Bandarmasih zone leads to the conclusion that both the quality of raw water and treated water as a whole meet the quality standards outlined in accordance with PERMENKES Regulation Number 2 of 2023. The assessment of clean water quality distributed is based on the water quality storet method, indicating that the clean water distributed by PAM Banjarmasih originates from the lightly polluted AD Mufti River, with a total score of (-9).

Noor tergolong tingkat β-Mesosaprobik sampai Oligosaprobik. P.M. Reservoir Noor which is also called the Riam Kanan Reservoir by the local community was formed in 1958 which was initiated by Ir. Prince Mochamad Noor with a function as a Hydroelectric Power Plant (PLTA), a source of water for irrigating rice fields as well as a tourism object, a source of drinking water, fish farming activities and transportation routes for the surrounding community. This research was conducted in the Reservoir. P.M. Noor in June within 3 weeks. The presence of aquatic organisms can be an indicator of the Community Structure of Plankton (phytoplankton and zooplankton) in the P.M. Noor includes abundance index (N), diversity index (H'), uniformity index (E), dominance index (D) and saprobic index (SI). The results showed that the value of the abundance index of phytoplankton ranged from 1630-2593 cells/L. The zooplankton abundance index ranged from 77-340 ind/L. The phytoplankton diversity index ranged from 1.79-1.85 and the zooplankton diversity index ranged from 0.09-0.48. Phytoplankton uniformity index (E>1 and zooplankton uniformity index (E>0.5). The phytoplankton dominance index (D<0.5) and the zooplankton dominance index (D>0.5) indicate that there are plankton species that dominate. The saprobic coefficient index ranges from 1.2-2 indicating that the waters of the P.M. Noor belongs to the level of β-Mesosaprobic to Oligosaprobic
