Abstract

Globalization is characterized by advances in science and technology that are inevitable by the community, including the people of Surakarta. People in Surakarta are in dilemma between tradition and modernization. Education, transportation, and economic advancement have transformed the social, religious, and cultural aspects of the people in Surakarta over the last three decades. Thus, how is the narrative of the paradigm shift of religiosity of the Surakarta community amid modernization? This descriptive qualitative study collected data through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The analysis employed an interactive analysis model. The findings revealed that the paradigm shift of religiosity of the Surakarta community is directly proportional to the social, political, economic, and cultural changes. There is a shift in the religious perspective of the Surakarta community known as hijrah from the abangan Muslim community to Islamist activism or new santri with all the limitations of understanding and Islamic doctrine, which requires assistance in terms of Javanese Islamic culture and local beliefs to avoid uprooting them. As a result of hijrah and becoming Islamic activism, people left the Javanese culture such as Kejawen and local beliefs. However, some of them have transformed the culture to fit the teachings of Islam. So far, those who hijrah to NU still adhere to religious traditions and even transform Javanese culture to suit the times. Meanwhile, Islamic activism has left Javanese Islamic traditions and local beliefs. The shift in religious paradigm asserts two things. They are internal and external encouragement. First, internal factors are in the form of encouragement from within religious communities. Second, external factors are external stimuli that can encourage a shift in the Surakarta community's religious perspective.

Abstract

Abstract

This study explains the transformation of the Dawuhan Tradition in Ngerso, Tawangmanggu, which is influenced by changes in religious practices that develop in the local community. This study uses a Cultural Studies approach to analyze changes in symbols and rituals that occur in the ceremony. The theory chosen in this study is Derrida's deconstruction theory, which is determined to reveal and understand the layers of meaning behind cultural and religious transformations. The main objective of this study is to show how negotiations between local traditions and religious influences reshape the implementation of the Dawuhan Tradition. Descriptive and qualitative methods collect data through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation. The results of this study indicate that there are changes in the implementation of the Dawuhan Ceremony, such as changes in the time of implementation, replacement of sacred elements, and changes in offerings presented to ancestors. These changes are a reflection of the cultural negotiations that occur between local traditions and religious influences. This negotiation is carried out to maintain the relevance of the ritual in the context of modern life. In conclusion, this study provides an overview of the complex socio-cultural dynamics in society (religion and culture); tradition must adapt to social change without losing its essence. This research implies that it is a form of preserving tradition in changing times, which is done by reinterpreting it to be more relevant. On the other hand, this research also shows the existence of social and political hegemony over changes in tradition, and it can be underlined that the flexibility and ambiguity of Javanese tradition allow society to negotiate and adapt to change without losing its cultural identity.

Abstract

Abstract This study analyzes the aesthetic deconstruction in wayang kulit (shadow puppet) performances, focusing on the Wahyu Katentreman play performed by puppeteer Cahyo Kuntadi. The study aims to identify the causes, processes, and implications of aesthetic deconstruction in wayang kulit performances and their impact on the sustainability of this traditional art form in the modern era. Using Jacques Derrida’s deconstruction theory as the primary approach, this research also references Jakob Sumardjo’s paradoxical aesthetic theory and Sunardi’s concepts of nuksma and mungguh. A qualitative research method with an interpretative analysis technique was employed, utilizing both primary and secondary data sources. The findings indicate that aesthetic deconstruction in this wayang kulit performance is driven by changing audience preferences influenced by materialism and hedonism. The deconstruction process is evident in the transition from sacred to profane elements, the fusion of various performance styles from Surakarta, Yogyakarta, and East Java, as well as the integration of spontaneous humor within the Punakawan characters. The implications of this deconstruction include the emergence of new references for young puppeteers, increased appreciation of wayang kulit among the millennial generation, and economic benefits for karawitan music groups and local communities. Thus, this study asserts that aesthetic deconstruction in wayang kulit not only contributes to innovation in performing arts but also plays a crucial role in maintaining the relevance of traditional culture amidst dynamic social changes.

Abstract

The development of the hijra community in Soloraya has significantly influenced all societal levels, particularly the millennial generation. This research aims to identify the model of religious moderation within the millennial generation in Soloraya, focusing on the hijra community, especially the Legawa and Bi-Adzab communities. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the analysis utilizes an interactive model encompassing data reduction, delivery, and conclusion drawing. The Legawa and Bi-Adzab hijra communities leverage public spaces for discourse, promoting a moderate, friendly, and welcoming interpretation of religion. Legawa and Bi-Adzab encourage Islam to enter deep into the public sphere so that it can access facilities properly so as not to threaten democracy and pluralism. These communities advocate for a deeper integration of Islam into the public sphere, ensuring proper access to facilities without compromising democracy and pluralism. Legawa and Bi-Adzab have become symbols of cultural resistance against Islamic movements advocating takfiri ideology and the Islamic caliphate, which are less accommodating of local traditions deemed laisa minal Islam. These communities prioritize local religious traditions in their activities, aiming to shape identity and enhance moral values. They serve as spiritual spaces that strengthen faith and promote a universal respect for local customs. The ultimate goal of Legawa and Bi-Adzab is to elevate the spirituality and religious devotion of the millennial generation.
