Abstract

This article describes the United States' national interests behind the Colombia 2016 Drugs and Peace Agreement. I assume, the peace agreement between the left-wing guerrilla group Fuerzas Armadas Revolucinarias De Colombia (FARC) and the Colombian Government which is fighting over territory of influence in the narcotics and drug abuse industry in Colombia, is very thick with the interests of the United States in the War on Drugs agenda. For this reason, the author uses qualitative research methods with library research data collection techniques, by focusing research on influential actors. By using two of the four indicators of national interest according to Nuechterlein, namely economic interests and defense interests, the author finds an illustration that to pursue economic interests, the United States opens the tap of bilateral relations with Colombia through export and import activities as well as investment. Meanwhile, in the interests of defense, the United States provides military assistance in helping Colombia to monitor and overcome the problem of coca cultivation and also conducts special training to the Colombian military.

Abstract

Indonesia is a developing country that has the characteristics and potential of development resources that rely heavily on the agricultural sector. Indonesia is the third largest source of agricultural products for New Zealand. New Zealand invites North Toraja to cooperate in agriculture and plantations which is realized through the Sister City collaboration. The existence of sister city cooperation that is woven gives little space and hope for the people of North Toraja, especially in the realization of agricultural development goals in North Toraja. The research uses qualitative methods. Related to this research, the author uses primary data collection techniques, namely interviews and secondary data, namely literature, journals and related documents. The results showed that the sister city cooperation agreement did not run optimally, the contents of the agreement were not fully actualized and the stages were not complete. This was caused by factors, namely not being followed-up properly, the budget was limited, Human Resources were not/not ready and the parties who bridged the two partners did not carry out their duties properly. Abstract

In a conflict, the presence of a third party is required to act as a mediator if a conflict cannot be resolved by the two (or more) parties involved in the conflict. The presence of a third party as a mediator and facilitator is sometimes accompanied by implicit elements of interest behind their involvement. This research is descriptive-qualitative, based on previous research, books, and journals similar to the primary data sources. The author will sort, elaborate, analyze and conclude the facts related to CMI's interests in its involvement in the RI-GAM conflict. In this research, it is proven that CMI is a third-party actor whose involvement as a mediator has more or less had a positive political and economic impact on relations between Indonesia as one of the conflict actors and Finland, which incidentally is the country of origin of CMI. As explained in this research, CMI's involvement led to the birth of collaborations between Indonesia and Finland. This political interest also does not escape the essential roles of the international community, which is a supporting element with CMI in resolving the Aceh conflict.

Abstract

Singapore is a country known as a regional economic center with a high and good standard of living. However, despite this progress, Singapore still cannot escape the problem of human trafficking. Human trafficking is a transnational issue that occurs very often but is challenging to detect. The most common forms of human trafficking in Singapore are sex trafficking and forced labor. Singapore has made various efforts in dealing with human trafficking and has succeeded in moving up to Tier 1 in the TIP Reports since 2020. These findings will explain the factors that support Singapore’s success in dealing with human trafficking from a conceptual perspective with the idea of a basic framework for combating human trafficking or “4Ps” according to the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act (TVPRA uses a descriptive qualitative method, namely containing the 4P factors, the active role of government and NGOs, cultural influences, population, and the encouragement of the national image. This research also discusses the dark side of Singapore in Human trafficking often occurs in Singapore’s red-light district, Geylang, as well as the reality of forced labor, which is inversely proportional to Singapore’s position in Tier 1.

Abstract

China is one of the dominant actors in the global rare earth elements market. This dominance then created a situation of dependence on China's rare earth metals. This research aims to analyze the United States Government's strategy in dealing with China's dominance of rare earths in the global market. The author uses the theory of offensive neorealism by John Mearsheimer as a conceptual framework in an attempt to explain the strategy of the United States. The type of research used is qualitative research with data collection techniques through library research in the form of primary data such as the official website of the United States Government, reports of rare earth companies in the United States, China and Australia, as well as secondary data sourced from research institutions, think tanks, articles from scientific institutions and professional organizations. After the data was collected and analyzed, the authors concluded that the United States' efforts to reduce import dependence were carried out by taking strategic steps through Executive Order or Executice Order 13817 and the Defense Production Act (DPA) during the Donald J Trump Administration (2017-2021). The move is a way to balance forces in limiting China's widespread dominance of rare earth metals. This effort is the impact of the dynamics of the international system that is anarchy, where the big countries never stop competing and pursuing power.
