Abstract

Aging is an inevitable and complex process. Cognitive impairment and depression are often seen as comorbid conditions and major mental health problems affecting the elderly. Both of these have become global issues and place a heavy burden on the health care system and society. This cross-sectional study aims to determine the relationship between depression and the incidence of cognitive impairment in the elderly group (³60 years) who meet the criteria by total sampling at the Sasana Tresna Werda RIA Development Center in January 2019. Depressive disorder was measured using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) is used to measure and identify cognitive impairments. Statistical analysis using the Fisher Exact test. Of the 56 respondents, the average age was 78.13 years with 69.6% of the respondents being women. From all respondents, it was found that 10 respondents experienced depression and 23.2% of the elderly had cognitive disorders. The results of the Fisher Exact statistical test stated that there was a significant relationship between the incidence of depression and the onset of cognitive impairment in the elderly group at Sasana Tresna Werda RIA Development (p-value: 0.041). Clinically, the elderly with depressive disorders have a 2.875 times higher risk of experiencing cognitive impairment compared to the elderly without depression. Treating depression can reduce the number of cognitive impairments in the elderly.

Abstract

Metabolic syndrome, encompassing hypertension, elevated blood glucose levels, high cholesterol, and increased waist circumference, is a significant risk factor for frailty in older adults. The FRAIL questionnaire is a screening tool that assesses five components of frailty, enabling early detection for appropriate intervention. This community service program was conducted using the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) method with 93 elderly participants. Health education and screening for metabolic syndrome and frailty were performed using the FRAIL questionnaire. Among the participants, 22.58% were categorized as "Non-Frail," 50.54% as "Pre-Frail," and 26.88% as "Frail." These findings indicate a high prevalence of frailty risk among the elderly population. The FRAIL questionnaire proved effective for early detection of frailty, facilitating preventive interventions such as physical activity, nutritional monitoring, comorbidity management, and psychosocial support. These measures have the potential to sustain long-term health in older adults. The application of the FRAIL questionnaire for the elderly provides significant benefits for managing frailty risk, with a sustainable approach that promotes the well-being of older adults.

Abstract

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease that commonly affects individuals in their productive and elderly years, significantly impairing quality of life. Early detection is essential to prevent disability due to OA, particularly in vulnerable groups such as university employees. This community service activity involved OA screening of 26 employees at Tarumanagara University using the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC). In addition to screening, participants received education on risk factors and OA prevention. The screening revealed varied levels of joint pain, stiffness, and functional limitations. The average WOMAC score was 32.27 (SD 17.63), ranging from 4 to 66 points. Several participants exhibited moderate to severe symptoms, especially during activities such as climbing stairs and performing household tasks. The WOMAC instrument proved effective in detecting early functional joint complaints. The educational component played a crucial role in raising participants’ awareness of the importance of healthy lifestyles and early OA management. This initiative successfully identified OA risks among university employees and enhanced their knowledge regarding disease prevention. Early detection and education should be established as routine workplace health programs. Keywords: Early Detection, Community Service, Osteoarthritis, University Employees, WOMAC
