Abstract

Writing arguments is a form of patterns and schemata that students have. Therefore, it is important to explore it comprehensively, so that this research aims to reveal argument schemata patterns, both basic and complex patterns, as well as their linguistic features. Through a qualitative approach with schemata theory and Toulmin argument patterns, the research produced three patterns, namely the basic pattern C-G 31 data (27.43), the simple pattern C-G-W 21 data (18.58), and the complex pattern C-G-W-B 10 data (8.85), C-G-W-B-Q 12 data (10.62), C-G-W-B-Q-R 7 data (6.20), C-G-Q 8 data (7.08), C-G-W-Q 11 data (9.73), C-G-B 7 data (6.20), and C-G-W-R 6 data patterns (5.31). Basic patterns are composed of two elements, simple patterns of three elements, and complex patterns are formed beyond the basic and straightforward. Students assert the definition using the linguistic schemata "is" as a claim and describe the object using the linguistic feature "is" in the claim to bolster the argument and serve as a warrant. Reaffirmation through the use of linguistic features, such as "my conclusion," "therefore," "so," "which," "even," and "must," as protection. In summary, three types of student argument schemata are present in the composition of expository texts: basic patterns, simple patterns, and complex patterns.

Abstract

The Maba Regional Language (BDM) is one of the regional languages found in North Maluku. BDM is spread over 5 sub-districts and 21 sub-districts/villages in East Halmahera Regency. Thus, the distribution of BDM speakers is very wide. BDM has not been studied from the aspect of pattern and function. In fact, in terms of patterns and functions, it has differences with other regional languages in Indonesia, so BDM needs to be studied in order to enrich the treasures of linguistics. BDM functions include S-P, S-P-O, S-P-O-K, and S-P-Pel which form the sentence structure of BDM. BDM sentences have a S-P-O-pa pattern (description: pa = aspect marker), K-S-kb-P sentence patterns, and S-kb-P-O sentence patterns (description: kb = auxiliary verb). The function of filler in compound sentences is SP-O, while single sentences have verbal predicate, adjective predicate, noun predicate, numeral predicate, phrase predicate, repositional, and also has a uniqueness, namely having a verbal adverbial predicate structure (adverb). Abstract

Learning to write news texts often leaves problems in the form of quality. Writing still seems like a mechanistic activity, not an activity that involves high critical and reflective thinking. This study aims to reveal students' metacognitive strategies in writing news texts. The problems studied are metacognitive strategies and the ability to apply metacognitive strategies. The study was conducted on students of class VIII of SMP IT Insan Kamil Halmahera Selatan qualitatively descriptively and exploratively with data collection techniques, namely questionnaires, interviews, and documentation. The results of the study showed that the metacognitive strategies, namely planning, monitoring, and evaluation obtained an average score of 4.15, classified as "High" based on student responses. This finding indicates that in general students have used metacognitive strategies in writing news texts quite well. Meanwhile, the ability of metacognitive strategies in writing news texts in the aspect of structure has an average score of 3.2 (good), news elements 2.8 (sufficient), language 3.0 (good), and the aspect of creativity has an average score of 2.8 (sufficient). In conclusion, students' metacognitive strategies in writing news texts are in the good category. It is suspected that the suboptimal metacognitive strategy is closely related to critical and reflective thinking as part of the metacognitive strategy.
