Abstract

The morphology of the Cimanuk Delta at the North Java Sea has changed rapidly over the last two decades. The annual sediment deposition is about two million cubic meters (Yuanita and Tingsanchali, [1]). The large-scale ocean hydrodynamics and sediment transport model MuSed3D (Muin, [2]) was applied to the North Java Sea to simulate suspended sediment transport at the study site. A potential offshore structure was positioned at approximately 30 km from the Cimanuk Delta. The result of the large-scale model was calibrated using observation data and Landsat satellite image interpretation. The agreement between the modeling results and the observations was excellent. It was found that the critical shear stresses for erosion and deposition were 0.1 Pa and 0.05 Pa respectively. An empirical formula was further utilized to assess the local scouring at the potential offshore structure site in a small-scale domain and under extreme conditions.

Abstract

Marine tourism sector in the Northeast Bali, Indonesia, experienced rapid development in the last decades. However, severe coastal erosion in some parts of the area has threaten the industry. Unsuccessful mitigation measures have been carried out by authorities by constructing seawalls along the coastline. The objective of the study is to understand the physical processes related to coastal erosion in the area and to assess the effectiveness of seawall along the coastline. To achieve the objectives, a GIS approach was carried out to investigate general changes of the coastline since 1944 until 2013. Hydrodynamics analyses and sediment transport simulations were also conducted and validated by the data from field measurements. The role of Mount Agung (a volcanic mountain) to the coastal dynamic system was also investigated. Moreover, the data from cGPS measurements in the island were also used for the analysis of possible land subsidence in the area. From social aspects, the history of USAT Liberty Shipwreck in Tulamben Village supports the analyses and provides information on the evolution of coastline in the area. We conclude that coastal erosion in North-east Bali has long been occurred and strongly affected by the dynamics of hydro-oceanography, volcanic activities, geological dynamics, and human interferences. Finally, the mechanism of coastal erosion in the area was also proposed.

Abstract

Abstract One pressing issue posing a significant threat to the coastal ecosystem is abrasion. Therefore, it is imperative to implement an effective and stable coastal protection structure using readily available and cost-effective materials combined with green mussel cultivation to bolster economic benefits for the community. The methodology employed in this study encompasses the integration and analysis of secondary data and the collection of archival information. The findings indicate that the ecological conditions of the waters in Bedono Village, Sayung District at Demak Regency meet the necessary criteria for green mussel cultivation. Bamboo with a minimum length of 7.5 meters and a planting depth of 2 meters is utilized. Financially, this approach proves to be quite advantageous, yielding a Net Present Value (NPV) of Rp1,202,383 for the stake method of green mussel cultivation. The Net Benefit-Cost Ratio (Net B/C) for the stake method of green mussel cultivation is 1.20. Based on the NPV and Net B/C feasibility criteria, the stake method of green mussel cultivation is considered viable. This structural concept is evaluated as adhering to ecological principles across all its components. Keywords: Abrasion, breakwater, green mussel, natural coastal protection

Abstract

Abstract

Reclamation works employing the Cement Pipe Mixing (CPM) method in the Phase 1–2 Patimban Port Project involve environmental risks that may affect water quality, material efficiency, ecosystems, project cost, and schedule. This study aims to identify environmental risks, develop Green Construction-based risk treatments, and evaluate their implications for the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), project schedule, cost, and implementation feasibility compared with the existing CPM approach. A mixed-methods approach based on ISO 31000:2018 was employed through stakeholder identification, identification of 30 environmental risks, development of a risk register, determination of mitigation measures, and formulation of a Green WBS, Green Schedule, and Green Cost. The analysis also compares the resulting Delta Cost and Cost of Risk. The findings indicate that the most significant risks occur during the Dredging and Pipe Mixing stages, with marine water quality representing the largest risk category at 33%. The integration of Green Construction introduces preventive controls, including silt curtains, real-time turbidity monitoring, leak detection, material loss control, emission monitoring, and waste management, without altering the fundamental CPM construction method. The main finding shows that project duration increases from 164 to 175 days, while cost increases from IDR 680.124 billion to IDR 684.304 billion. The resulting Delta Cost is IDR 4.18 billion, equivalent to 0.61% of the baseline cost, compared with an estimated Risk Treatment cost of IDR 8.065 billion. Thus, Green Construction is considered economically feasible on an indicative basis, as the additional mitigation cost is lower than the estimated risk-treatment consequence. The integrated framework also strengthens environmental risk control and supports the principles of SDGs 9, 12, 13, and 14.
