Abstract

Mental health issues among adolescents in Indonesia are significant public health concern, with the prevalence rate reported 9.8%. Advances in information technology and widespread use of social media are factors that bring benefits as well as adverse effects on adolescent mental health. The study aimed to examine the association between social media addiction and the mental health of Generation Z college students. We used a cross-sectional study on May-July 2024 in University X, West Sumatera Province. The sample was 140 students based on Lemeshow's sample size formula. We conducted purposive sampling in 15 faculties proportionally. Data were collected through interviews using structured questionnaires adopted from Social Media Addiction Scale (SMAS) and Self Report Questionnaire (SRQ)-20. Data were analyzed using linear regression test with 95% Confidence Interval. The Majority of respondents were female (60%), from 2023 cohort (26.43%), and lived in a boarding house (76.43%). The most frequently used social media by respondents were: Instagram (68.6%), TikTok (55%), and WhatsApp (50%). The most significant relationship (p-value<0.001) was found between social media addiction and students' mental health adjusted by gender, residential, and admission year of students. These findings suggest that social media addiction related to mental health issues among college students. It is recommended that the university collaborate with the health service to conduct regular screening and mental health assesment for students. Abstract

Tuberkulosis merupakan penyakit menular dan penyebab kematian kedua tertinggi di dunia. Indonesia menempati peringkat kedua penyumbang kasus TBC global setelah India.

Abstract

State Elementary School (SDN) 04 Gaung in Padang City is within the working area of the Mata Air Community Health Center, which has a high record of infectious disease cases among children, such as diarrhea and dengue fever (DF). The school environment faces sanitation challenges, with open drains and standing water during rainfall, which increase the risk of disease transmission. This activity aims to enhance students' understanding of infectious disease prevention through education using flash card game media. The program employed a pre-test and post-test design, involving 19 students from grades 4 and 5. The intervention consisted of education using flash card games containing information about Clean and Healthy Living Practices (PHBS). Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test to measure changes in knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors before and after the intervention. There was a significant improvement in all measured variables: knowledge (p=0.000) with an average increase from 3.16 to 6.84, attitude (p=0.034) from 6.32 to 6.68, and behavior (p=0.003) from 4.58 to 5.58. The majority of participants were female (63.2%) and 10 years old (52.6%). Education through flash card games proved effective in increasing knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of SDN 04 Gaung students regarding infectious disease prevention. This interactive learning method successfully created a fun and informative learning environment for students.

Abstract

Background: Pneumonia remains the leading infectious cause of death in children under five globally. In Padang City, Indonesia, pediatric pneumonia cases increased sharply from 2021 to 2023, yet the environmental and host-related determinants driving this trend remain poorly understood in the local tropical urban context. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the correlation between physical environmental factors humidity, wind speed, temperature, rainfall, PM10, and PM2.5  and pediatric pneumonia incidence in Padang City from 2021 to 2023, and to spatially map host-related intervention coverage across sub-districts.Methods: An ecological study design was employed using monthly secondary data aggregated at the city level (n = 36 months). Pneumonia case data were obtained from the Padang City Health Office, meteorological data from BPS, and air quality data from the Environmental Agency. Pearson correlation and multiple linear regression were used for statistical analysis following assumption testing. Spatial overlay mapping was conducted using QGIS to examine the geographic distribution of cases in relation to exclusive breastfeeding, vitamin A supplementation, and complete basic immunization coverage. Results: A total of 5,428 cases were recorded (mean: 150.78 cases/month). Wind speed showed a significant positive correlation (r = 0.436, p = 0.008) and PM2.5 a significant negative correlation (r = −0.516, p = 0.003) with pneumonia incidence. PM2.5 was the most dominant predictor (R² = 0.463). Spatial analysis identified Kuranji and Lubuk Begalung as persistently high-burden sub-districts, consistently associated with inadequate host-factor intervention coverage. Conclusion: Wind speed and PM2.5 are significant environmental determinants of pediatric pneumonia in Padang City. Integrated strategies combining air quality monitoring, vitamin A supplementation, immunization programs, and strengthened Posyandu-based interventions are essential to reduce pneumonia burden in tropical urban settings.

Abstract

Background: Complete basic immunization (CBI) coverage in West Sumatra Province remains critically low, posing a significant public health challenge. Objective: This study aimed to identify determinants of CBI achievement among children aged 12–23 months in West Sumatra Province using nationally representative data from the 2023 Indonesia Health Survey (Survei Kesehatan Indonesia/SKI 2023).Methods: A cross-sectional study design was employed through secondary data analysis of the SKI 2023 dataset. The analytical sample comprised 609 children aged 12–23 months residing in West Sumatra Province. Variables examined included child characteristics (sex, birth weight), maternal factors (employment status, educational level, gestational age at delivery, KIA book ownership), health service factors (place of delivery, healthcare accessibility), family socioeconomic status, and history of adverse events following immunization (AEFI). Survey-weighted univariate, bivariate (chi-square test), and multivariate (binary logistic regression) analyses were performed. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05.Results: Among 609 children aged 12–23 months, 87.8% (n = 534) had incomplete immunization status and only 12.2% (n = 75) had received complete basic immunization. The measles-rubella vaccine recorded the lowest coverage at 68.4%. In bivariate analysis, maternal employment (p = 0.045) and KIA book ownership (p = 0.001) were significantly associated with CBI status. In multivariate analysis, only KIA book ownership remained a significant independent determinant: children whose mothers did not own a KIA book were nearly five times more likely to have incomplete immunization (Adjusted OR = 4.86; 95% CI: 1.63–14.47; p = 0.005).Conclusion: KIA book ownership is the primary independent determinant of complete basic immunization achievement in West Sumatra Province. Targeted interventions should prioritize optimizing KIA book utilization, strengthening health education for working mothers, and addressing structural barriers to immunization services.
