Abstract

This study is aimed to identify the motivation of students in learning Speaking. At first, it is found out that there were 50% of the students still have low motivation in learning speaking. This research was a qualitative research that describes the condition of students in learning speaking. The writer tried to use another method which is called Cooperative Leaning to enhance students’ motivation in learning speaking. After doing it for some period of time, it showed a result that at the end of the course, students who have low motivation decrease to 20% only. By applying cooperative learning, teacher only plays a little part in speaking in one meeting. The teacher only gives a short explanation about the lesson and then guide the students to do the rest of the activities. The improvement can be seen obviously. The percentage of students who have lack of motivation in speaking decrease significantly. Only 20 % that still feel shy to speak in front of the class, but if we put them in group, they want to participate although still play small parts in their group. They enjoy and are satisfy in learning process. Moreover, they concern with the next speaking activities.Keywords: low motivation, speaking, cooperative learning.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui keefektifan metode jigsaw dalam pembelajaran speaking, serta pengaruh dari salah satu aspek psikologis siswa yaitu kecemasan berbicara terhadap kemampuan speaking. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kuasi eksperimen yang bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah ada pengaruh dari metode pembelajaran jigsaw dan faktor kecemasan berbicara terhadap kemampuan speaking siswa. Penelitian ini menggunakan populasi seluruh mahasiswa Prodi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Universitas Riau Kepulauan, Kepulauan Riau dan pemilihan sampel dilakukan dengan tehnik random sampling. Data dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan tes dan kuesioner. Data yang dihasilkan merupakan data pengaruh metode jigsaw terhadap kemampuan speaking, serta pengaruh dari faktor psikologis kecemasan terhadap prestasi speaking. Metode jigsaw ini diharapkan dapat menjadi model bagi pengembangan silabus dan satuan acara pembelajaran Speaking. Sedangkan faktor psikologis kecemasan berbicara diharapkan akan dapat diatasi dengan menggunakan metode pembelajaran jigsaw.Kata kunci: Metode Jigsaw, Kecemasan Berbicara, Kemampuan Speaking the goal when we teach speaking to foreign language learners. However, the goal was rarely achieved in speaking class. In this study, one of technique in Cooperative Learning, jigsaw technique, was proposed. It was predicted that jigsaw technique of teaching speaking and student’s speaking anxiety had effect toward student’s speaking competence. Jigsaw is a technique that can be used in speaking class as it assigns the students to work in team, where they tend to feel secured and comfortable to learn speaking. While speaking anxiety could be a language barrier distracting the students to succeed in speaking class. It is an internal factor from the student’s mind which prevents them from delivering communicative competence. Thus, the objectives of the study were to find out the effectiveness of jigsaw technique in teaching speaking as well as the influence of speaking anxiety, one of psychological factors in learning foreign language, towards the student’s speaking competence. The population of the research was the first semester students of English Department Universitas Riau Kepulauan. The research method was a quasi experiment and the data were taken by using a speaking test and questionnaires. Students’ speaking competences were assessed based on six categories namely fluency, task, comprehension, grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary. While Saito’s speaking anxiety questionnaire was used to reveal student’s speaking anxiety. Abstract

The aims of the research were to measure a significant effect on students’ average scores of reading comprehension achievement between students:1)who both had high instrumental motivation in experiment class (Onomatopoeia in Comic Strips) and control class;2) who had high instrumental motivation in control class and the ones who had middle instrumental motivation in experiment class;3) who both had middle instrumental motivation in experiment class (Onomatopoeia in Comic Strips) and control class;4) who had high instrumental motivation in experiment class and the ones who had middle instrumental motivation in control class;and 5) to find whether there was an interaction or not on students’ reading comprehension achievement taught using Onomatopoeia in Comic Strips towards instrumental motivation. Experimental with factorial design was used in this research by using 40 samples of the third semester students of English Education Study Program of UNRIKA classified into high and middle instrumental motivation. The validity used content validity while reliability of the data measured by Cronbach Alpha using SPSS 24. The data were collected through Onomatopoeia test and Gardner’s instrumental motivation questionnaire. It was found from the analysis that both of the data were normal, homogenous and all hyphoteses had a significant effect. Keywords: Onomatopoeia in Comic Strips, Instrumental Motivation, Reading

Abstract

This study aimed to find out the most dominant listening strategies used by the students and to determine the correlation between the use of listening strategies and their listening comprehension. The type of the research was quantitative with correlational design. This study used a population of the 4th semester students of English Education Study Program, University of Riau Kepulauan, in which the sample was selected by total sampling technique. Data were collected by using listening strategy questionnaire and listening test. To analyze the data, descriptive statistics (Mean and Standard Deviation) were used to find out the most dominant strategies to the ones that were rarely used by students in completing listening comprehension task. Second, to find out whether or not  there was a significant correlation between listening strategies used and listening skills, the data were analyzed by  using Pearson Correlation to determine the correlation between two variables, listening strategies and listening comprehension.

Abstract

The writers described hierarchy of human needs and what are dominant needs of Louisa Clark base on Maslow’s theory. The writers are interested to discover the psychological needs, the needs for security, the needs for love and belonging, the needs for esteem and self-actualization needs of Louisa Clark in 'Me Before you' novel by the famous novelist Jojo Moyesn based on Maslow’s theory. This research is qualitative research. In the data collection technique, the writers use a descriptive textual method. In the process of analyzing the data, the writers collect the data and then the data are rewritten and grouped by the types. Then the data are analyzed again based on the theory of 'Hierarchy of Human Needs by Abraham Maslow'. The result of analyzing data is Louisa Clark needs all needs in Maslow’s theory. In conclusion, from five Maslow’s human needs theory the dominant needs needed by Louisa Clark is love and belonging needs.

Abstract

The living environment should be the most comfortable place for eachindividual. But in fact there are several factors that can affect comfortness,one of which is environmental problems. To find causes and effects as wellas solutions to these problems, of course, requires direct participationfrom the community. The Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) techniquecan be an approach that can be used and open a discussion forum in thecommunity so that they can participate in voicing their opinions aboutproblems that exist in their living environment. Desa Sukamaju,Kecamatan Kadudampit, Kabupaten Sukabumi, Provinsi Jawa Barat waschosen as the location for researchers to carry out PRA activities. Theresearch method used in this research is qualitative action research. Fromthe results of the discussion forum held with the community, it was foundthat the waste problem was ranked first. This is concluded through thePRA technique of pohon masalah, matriks ranking, and pemetaan desa.For these problems, education about ecobricks and socialization on wastemanagement was held as a solution to the waste problem in DesaSukamaju.

Abstract

This study aims to describe and determine the leadership of the madrasah principal in increasing the organizational potential of students at MTs Nihayatul Amal Purwasari. The principal of the madrasa has an important position in mobilizing, activating education, and harmonizing all existing resources in the madrasa. The head of the madrasa as an education manager must be able to build an increase in the organizational potential of students. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method and methods of collecting information in the form of observation, interviews, and documentation. The objectives to be achieved in this study are to find out how the leadership of the madrasah principal in increasing the organizational potential of students at MTs Nihayatul Amal Purwasari and how the planning and implementation of madrasah principals in increasing the organizational potential of students. The results of this study indicate that the head of the madrasah plans programs for students, then discusses with the head of student affairs and teacher mentors to maximize the participant's organizational program and in its implementation students will be directed or fostered according to their interests and talents to increase the potential possessed by students.

Abstract

Tujuan dari pengabdian masyarakat ini adalah untuk memberikan menambah pengetahuan kepada masyarakat terutama orang tua tentang pentingnya penggunaan internet sebagai salah satu media pembelajaran yang bermanfaat bagi anak didik dan orang tua berperan penting dalam menyukseskan hal tersebut. Pengabdian masyarakat ini dikenakan kepada masyarakat Tanjung Gadang, Sijunjung. Metode pelaksanaan yang dilakukan dengan memberikan penyuluhan penyuluhan kepada masyarakat Tanjung Gadang dan kemudian dilakukan tanya jawab antara presenter dan peserta. Manfaat dari pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini diharapkan nantinya masyarakat terkusus orang tua dapat memahami pentingnya penggunaan internet dalam pembelajaran anak di sekolah sehingga anak dapat termotivasi belajar lebih giat dengan media belajar internet yang tentunya dalam pengawasan orang tua. Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the language style in Robert Frost’s poem called "The Sound of Trees" in terms of frozen style, formal style, consultative style, casual style and intimate style. This poem is viewed from sociolinguistics study analysis by using Martin Joos theory as a guide to analyse the language style in Robert Frost’s poem. This study used descriptive method to analyze the data. Frozen language style used in an important document, in court also reciting a pledge. Formal style follows the speech most recognized by people in society. It is used when one in a particular place or situation. Consultative language style aims by the person between strangers, person to person without using slangs. This type of style stills has boundaries and limit in which who is someone talking to. Casual style can be used with acquaintance or the person you just meet. Intimate style frequently used in term when a person already know the target person. It can be between family members, couples and close friend.

Abstract

Head injury is a serious complication often occurring in traffic accident victims, especially in the West Sumatra region. This study aims to analyze the demographic profile, types of injuries, and risk factors among traffic accident victims who suffered head injuries. Data were collected from 50 patients treated at Dr. M. Djamil General Hospital in Padang during the study period. The results show that the majority of victims were male (64%), with late adolescents (17-25 years old) being the most dominant age group (36%). Mild head injuries were the most commonly found (48%), and single-vehicle accidents were the most frequent type of accident (54%). This study highlights the importance of prevention and management of head injuries in high-risk populations in West Sumatra.
