Abstract

The National Examination in Indonesia, which began in 2015, was no longer a determinant of student graduation at the end of the education level. Utilization of the examination results will affect the seriousness of the students in working on it. This study aims to describe the level of seriousness of 12th grade students in working on National   Examinations, when it no longer a determinant of graduation by examining teachers and school principals’ point of view. This research is a qualitative study by using the phenomenology approach. Data was collected using focus group discussions (FGD) conducted 3 times in 3 provinces in Indonesia, consisted of Yogyakarta, South Kalimantan and East Nusa Tenggara. FGD participants were 9 high school principals, 9 vice principal of curriculum, and 54 teachers who teach subjects that are tested on national exam. In each province, three schools were selected, consisted of   two public schools, and one private school. Data were analyzed using data reduction stages, to find relationships between themes, and verification. The results showed that the motivation of 12th grade students in preparing National Examination were reduced.  They no longer focused on preparing the exams, otherwise they preparing themselves for higher education.  Furthermore, students tended to select subjects that were easier and the teacher should motivate students harder to prepare for the National Examination.

Abstract

Integrity and good character are two qualities that are important for students. Entering the new normal era, this character becomes a particular attraction, especially regarding students' honesty in participating in online/offline learning. Sometimes, the integrity character may not receive maximum attention from the school community and policymakers because the argument is that there is already conditioning in the environment. Schools foster the character of integrity, but from the observations of some teachers, they do not carry out and provide supervision during the learning process. These small rights can lead to the phenomenon of dishonesty, such as cooperation that is not allowed during the test (congregational cheating/academic honesty). The research method carried out is more qualitative. However, it also uses quantitative data as a support to sharpen the analysis. The primary data collection methods are interviews, observation, and document review. The results of the study indicate that the character integrity of students ideally has a model or example of the application of the character of integrity, especially in the aspect of honesty, applying a reward and punishment model to students with good character.

Abstract

Food insecurity affects every aspect of student development. Cultivating food security through education can be implemented through the culturization of food security in nature schools, and it is encouraged to be managed at the elementary level. Research relating to differences in the influence of nature school management on food security has not yet been found. This research aims to analyze the differences in the influence of general and Islamic school management on the culturization of food security. This research used a quantitative approach with a multivariate analysis of variance method using SPSS software. Data were collected using questionnaires of 20 items consisting of three aspects: school policy, learning activity, and student engagement. The participants were 28 principals and representatives in 15 nature elementary schools in West Java Province, Indonesia. The respondents were chosen from a population of nature elementary school principals using purposive sampling. The sampling encompasses the distribution of nature elementary schools based on types of school management and their distributive location. The result of the multivariate test shows a value of 0,260 0.05. This result means that different types of school management have an insignificant impact on the culturization of food security. The weakest aspect is school policy, with a mean score of 15.93, while learning activity and student engagement obtain a mean score of 27.25 and 27.50 for each. These findings imply that school policy in nature elementary schools must be improved to support a food security culture.

Abstract

This pioneering research endeavors to delve into the competencies of special education teachers in Indonesia concerning the development of literacy and numeracy assessments rooted in local wisdom, while simultaneously exploring the fundamental concepts of evaluation and teacher responsibilities. Employing a mixed-method explanatory design, the study represents a novel approach to understanding the intricate interplay between pedagogical practices and cultural contexts. Drawing upon a diverse research population comprising special education teachers across Indonesia, the quantitative component of the study employs a rigorous proportional random sampling method, culminating in a robust sample size of 457 participants. Meanwhile, the qualitative inquiry adopts purposive and snowball sampling techniques to ensure a comprehensive exploration of teachers' perspectives and experiences. Research data, spanning questionnaires, interviews, observations, and document analyses, are meticulously collected and analyzed using innovative methodological frameworks such as Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and variance-based Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) for quantitative data, and data reduction, display, and conclusion for qualitative data. Findings underscore the nuanced variations in teachers' competencies across different regions, with Bali emphasizing the basic concept of evaluation, NTB Province prioritizing teacher responsibility, and NTT Province echoing similar sentiments. This research not only sheds light on the unique challenges and opportunities encountered by special education teachers but also offers invaluable insights into the integration of local wisdom in assessment development, paving the way for more culturally responsive and effective educational practices in Indonesia and beyond.

Abstract

The primary objective of this research was to investigate the influence of storytelling as a pedagogical approach on the development of empathy in a group of bilingual kindergarten students. To achieve this, an experimental research design was employed, utilizing a one-group pretest-posttest comparative methodology. The study involved 12 bilingual kindergarten students; all of them were part of the experimental group. An initial examination of descriptive statistical data revealed that the average pretest score was 43.08, which increased to 45.00 in the post-test, indicating a notable improvement in the student's scores. Further statistical analysis, specifically the Wilcoxon test, confirmed the significance of the impact of storytelling on the students' empathy levels. The test resulted in a significance value of p = 0.002 (p < 0.01), providing compelling evidence that storytelling as a teaching method had a substantial and positive effect on enhancing empathy in bilingual kindergarten students. These findings suggest that incorporating storytelling into the curriculum can be a valuable tool in nurturing empathy in young learners, with potential implications for enhancing their social and emotional development.
