Abstract

Nasal prominence based on Holdaway analysis in late adolescent Javanese males and females: a cross-sectional studyIntroduction: The face is an important part of an individual's identity and plays a significant role in shaping self-confidence. One aspect that contributes to facial aesthetics is nasal prominence, which is closely related to the harmony between the nose and other facial structures, including the upper lip. Differences in growth patterns exist between males and females. Moreover, each ethnic group has distinct characteristics shaped by genetic and environmental factors, including facial structure and proportions. This study aims to analyze differences in nasal prominence between late adolescent Javanese males and females using Holdaway analysis. Methods: This cross-sectional study analyzed profile photographs of 70 males aged 16–20 years and 70 females aged 14–18 years from Muhammadiyah 1 High School in Klaten. Nasal prominence was measured as the distance from the pronasal point to the perpendicular line drawn from the labrale superior to the Frankfort Horizontal Plane (FHP). Data were analyzed using an independent t-test. Results: Nasal prominence was greater in males (5.32 ± 1.35 mm) than in females (4.57±0.84 mm), with a statistically significant difference (p<0.05). Conclusion: Late-adolescent Javanese males exhibit greater nasal prominence compared to females. This difference reflects sexual dimorphism, that influences the aesthetic harmony between the nose and the upper lip.

Abstract

Children with intellectual disabilities have cognitive limitations, fine motor impairments and low conceptual understanding, which hinder their ability to perform self-care activities independently, including brushing their teeth. Limited fine motor skills can affect their ability to grip and control a toothbrush, making hand grip strength a relevant variable in efforts to enhance the independence of children with intellectual disabilities in brushing their teeth. The aim of this study is to analyze the relationship between toothbrushing behavior and hand grip strength in children with intellectual disabilities. This study employs an observational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample selection was conducted using purposive sampling, resulting in 38 respondents. Toothbrushing behavior has a significant relationship with hand grip strength in children with intellectual disabilities. Variables such as frequency, duration and brushing time (morning and night) consistently influence grip type, strength control, independence, grip duration, stability and grip precision. Repeated toothbrushing with a specific pattern can improve fine motor strength and support children's independence and quality of life.

Abstract

Background: Anxiety control is required to achieve successful dental treatment especially in children. Dental anxiety is exaggerated fear or worry associated with dental treatment and it is followed with a sense of losing control. Moringa oleifera has been claimed as a potential plant to treat anxiety. A large amount of flavonoid in Moringa oleifera leaves is known to have anxiolytic effect due to their interaction with gamma-aminobutyricacid (GABA) receptors like benzodiazepine molecule. The aim of this study was to determine the anxiolytic effect of aqueous extract of Moringa oleifera (AEMO) leaves in balb/c mice. Method: Subject of this study was 25 mice divided into 5 groups. Diazepam as a positive control (K+), CMC-Na 0.5% as a negative control (K-), aqueous extract of M. oleifera leaves 375 mg/kgBW (P1), 500 mg/kgBW (P2), and 625 mg/kgBW (P3). Tests were conducted using Elevated Plus Maze. Before and after data were analyzed with paired T-test, differences of anxiety score between groups was analyzed with One-way ANOVA. Result: Group P2 and P3 significantly reduce anxiety in mice (p

Abstract

Assessment of maternal concern based on mothers’ knowledge and behavior toward the oral health status of children with Down syndrome: a cross-sectional studyIntroduction: Children with Down syndrome are at high risk for poor oral health due to motor impairments, cognitive limitations, and low levels of maternal concern. The purpose of this study was to analyze the influence of maternal concern, based on knowledge and behavior, on the oral health status of children with down syndrome aged 6-12 years. Methods: This observational study with a cross-sectional approach involved 30 children with Down syndrome and their mothers, members of Persatuan Orang Tua Anak Sindrom Down (POTADS) in Yogyakarta and Kebumen. Maternal knowledge and behavior were assessed using a Guttman scale questionnaire developed from the study of Arnela Nur. The children’s oral health status was measured using the Gingival Index (GI) and Patient Hygiene Performance (PHP) Index. Data were analyzed using Spearman’s correlation test and multiple linear regression at a 95% confidence level. Results: There was a significant relationship between maternal behavior and the GI (r=0.57; p<0.05) and PHP scores (r=0.74; p<0.05), as well as between maternal knowledge and PHP (r 0.38; p<0.05). However, the relationship between knowledge and GI was not significant (r=–0.20; p>0.05). The contribution of maternal knowledge and behavior to GI was R²=0.39, while their contribution to PHP was R²=0.67. Conclusion: Maternal knowledge showed a weak relationship with lower PHP scores and no association with GI, whereas maternal behavior showed a significant relationship with reduced GI and PHP scores in children. Thus, good maternal oral care behavior can improve the oral health status of children with Down syndrome.
