Abstract

Prevention of cardiovascular diseases by controlling risk factors at an early stage is very important. Objective: To determine the relationship between periodontal conditions with serum lipids among the elderly. Methods: Total of 78 participants (56 males and 32 females) who were in the age range of 60-76 years were selected for the current study. A logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the association between periodontal conditions and serum lipid profile. Periodontal conditions was recorded as the maximum score of pocket depth (PD) and loss of attachment (LoA) score which presented in the participants, while levels of total cholesterol (TC), high density lipoprotein (HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), and triglycerides (TG) were measured for the serum lipids profile. Age, gender, BMI, high blood pressure, pattern of dental visit, hypertension and cholesterol medication, number of teeth, PD, and LoA were included in the model as independent variable. TC, HDL, LDL, and TG were used as dependent variables. Results: According to the results of the logistic regression analysis, loss of attachment >6 mm was associated with TC (p<0.01; 5.295(1.710-16.391) and LDL (p<0.05; 2.87(1.118-7.405), while PD had no association with serum lipids (p>0.05). Conclusion: This study indicates that subjects with greater loss of attachment significantly associated with higher levels of serum TC and LDL. This may suggest that elderly people with greater loss of attachment are potentially at risk of having serum lipid impairment.

Abstract

Yogyakarta is a province in Indonesia with the highest prevalence (2.4%) of Diabetes Mellitus (DM). Around 90% of diabetic patients suffer from type 2 DM. Oral manifestations of DM may disturb oral functions which in turn influence oral health - related quality of life (OHRQo)L. This study aimed to evaluate the OHRQoL of type 2 DM outpatients in Yogyakarta General Hospital. The study subjects comprised 50 male outpatients and 32 female outpatients with type 2 DM (40-81 years old). Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) and Xerostomia Inventory were used to assess OHRQoL and xerostomia status, respectively. Intraoral examinations comprising periodontal tissue, oral hygiene (OH), coated tongue, and present teeth were performed. There were 49 (59.76%) subjects with low and 33 (40.24%) subjects with high score of GOHAI; 78 (95.12%) with and 4 (4.88%) without periodontal tissue defect; 79 (96.34%) with poor and 3 (3.66%) good OH; 17 (20.73%) with coated tongue >50% and 65 (79.27%) with coated tongue ≤50%; 34 (41.46%) with present teeth <20 and 48 (58.54%) with present teeth ≥20; and 39 (47.56%) with xerostomia and 43 (52.44%) with normal status. Only ‘present teeth’ had a significant contribution to the proportion of GOHAI status in type 2 DM patients in this study (p=0.032). Type 2 DM patients with ≥20 teeth had a more significant proportion of high GOHAI status compared to those with <20 teeth. The majority of type 2 DM outpatients of Yogyakarta General Hospital had poor OHRQoL as reflection of their oral condition that is partly contributed by patients with present teeth <20.

Abstract

Background: Visually impaired children have a low vision to visualize the process of plaque removal on teeth resulting in dental caries progression. Dental caries has an impact on children’s quality of life. The impact of dental caries on oral health related quality of life among visually impaired children remains mostly unknown. This study aimed to determine the correlation between dental caries and oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL) among visually impaired children.Method: This study was an observational study with a cross sectional design and conducted across four regencies in Yogyakarta and Central Java Province. A total of 70 visually impaired children aged 7-18 participated in this study. The participants underwent a dental examination to determine their caries experience using DMFT/dmft index. Oral health related quality of life was measured using the COHIP SF 19 questionnaire with interviewing method.Result: Data analysis showed that caries frequency was 94,3%. The mean number of DMFT/dmft index was 4,8 ± 2,743. Spearman correlation test showed the p value was 0,611 (p>0,05) for the correlation between DMFT/dmft index and OHRQoL.Conclusion: This study showed no correlation between dental caries and oral health related quality of life among visually impaired children.

Abstract

The selection of appropriate dental health education methods will be beneficial in promoting dental health. This study aimed to determine the difference in the effect of role-playing method and storytelling method on knowledge and attitudes towards oral hygiene among elementary school students. The research subjects were 112 students in grade 5. The subjects were divided into 2 different treatment groups, namely 56 students in grade 5 at SD Negeri Tegalrejo I with the storytelling method and 56 students in grade 5 at SD Negeri Tegalrejo II using the role-playing method. The measuring instrument in this research was a questionnaire. The data analysis used the Mann-Whitney test and Wilcoxon Signed Ranks test because the data were not normally distributed. The results of the analysis showed that there was a significant increase over time in knowledge and attitudes carried out in 3 assessments. The mean rank for delta values between the pre-test and posttest 2 for the knowledge variable using the role-playing method was 51.29 while that using the storytelling method was 61.71. Meanwhile, the mean rank for delta values for the attitude variable using the role-playing method was 49.93, while that using the storytelling method was 63.07. The results of the delta analysis from pre-test to post-test 1 and pre-test to post-test 2 showed that the storytelling group experiences a higher increase in knowledge and attitudes than the role-playing group (p<0.05). Provision of education using a storytelling method shows better improvement in students’ knowledge and attitudes towards oral hygiene than using a role-playing method.

Abstract

The elderly had various oral health issues, one of which is taste sensitivity. Taste sensitivity is highly affected by a person’s health, medication, eating habits, nutritional status, and oral hygiene. As an important organ for the sense of taste, the tongue can be covered in a white coating of debris, bacteria, and dead cells. To clean the tongue coating, one can do tongue brushing procedure, but this practice is not common among the elderly, especially in Indonesia. This cross-sectional study involved 114 older adults (n= 114) in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta- DIY), Indonesia, who were selected using stratified random sampling. The participants first signed the informed consent before undergoing an interview and going through oral clinical examination. This research particularly measured the tongue coating index and taste sensitivity level by way of statistically analyzing both variables to determine the correlation between tongue coating index and taste sensitivity level using three-dropmethod. Data from 114 subjects were presented descriptively using table and graphic. Most of the subjects 90.53% (103 subjects) had a coated tongue with various degree. The correlation statistic between tongue coating index and taste sensitivity level showed the statistically significant correlation (p-value = 0.019) and the coefficient correlation was -0.216, which means that there was a negative and weak correlation between both. Elderly with a higher tongue coating index tended to have less taste sensitivity. This could be due to debris blocking taste buds, thereby reducing taste sensitivity.

Abstract

Inadequate oral health conditions would prevent children from participating in normal activities, which in turn would lead to changes in the children’s development and well-being. The aim of the study was to know whether dental caries and family expenditure are associated with quality of life related to dental and oral health among children aged 10–12 years. This study was conducted using observational quantitative with cross-sectional design. The research respondents were 126 students (n= 126) aged 10–12 years who were attending elementary school in Gamping Subdistrict, Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta. The respondents were selected based on proportional random sampling by applying inclusion and exclusion criteria. Quality of life related to dental and oral health assessment was done using CPQ11-12 ISF-16 version regarding their dental caries status (DMF-T) and family expenditure. The results of this study, based on Pearson’s correlation analysis showed that dental caries status and family expenditure were significantly correlated with quality of life related to dental and oral health (p = 0.013 and p = 0.001). The findings of multiple regression analysis suggested significant effects of family expenditures and caries status on quality of life related to dental and oral health (p = 0.001 and p = 0.037) and R2 = 0.161. Lower dental caries was associated with better quality of life related to dental and oral health. Higher family expenditure was associated with better quality of life related to dental and oral health. Dental caries status and family expenditure contributed to 16.1% of quality of life related to dental and oral health.

Abstract

Temanggung Regency in Central Java is an area with an extensive tobacco farming, allowing its residents to have ease of access to cigarettes. In addition, it has become a tradition for locals in this area to serve any visiting guest with cigarettes. Adolescents start smoking to cope with the psychosocial crisis during their development, particularly when they try to find their identity. Smoking is, in fact, a risk factor for dental caries, so the adolescents in Temanggung have a quite high prevalence of caries. Thus, this study aimed to determine the sequence of the risk factors affecting the caries risk based on cariogram among male smokers aged 15-24 years (adolescents). This was a quantitative observational study with a cross sectional design. There were 152 subjects (n= 152) selected using a proportionate clustered random sampling out of the total population (316 adolescents). The research was carried out with a clinical examination of the oral cavity, measuring salivary secretions, examining the amount of plaque, and examining DMF-T. Scoring was done using a caliogram application. The results of this study showed that 81.3% of the adolescents had a moderate caries risk, while 18.1% of them had a high caries risk. The sequence of the risk factors affecting the caries risk based on cariogram was bacteria (22.90%), susceptibility (19.39%), dietary habits (12.09%), and other influencing conditions (7.55%).
