Abstract

Graphical Abstract Research Highlights The combination of honey and hirta improved hematological parameters of C. gariepinus catfish infected with A. hydrophila bacteria. The combination of honey and hirta positive affected the histopathology of liver, kidneys, and gills, which led to a restoration of organ function to normal levels. The combination of honey and hirta also improved the morphology of C. gariepinus. The most effective combination of honey and hirta was treatment C (1:2). Abstract Honey and Euphorbia hirta are natural ingredients that may serve as alternative treatments for Clarias gariepinus catfish infected with Aeromonas hydrophila bacteria. Both honey and E. hirta contain bioactive compounds with known antibacterial properties. This study aims to investigate the effects of combining honey and E. hirta on various hematological parameters, including erythrocytes, leukocytes, MCH, MCV, as well as histopathological and morphological changes in C. gariepinus catfish infected with A. hydrophila. This study used an experimental design involving three treatment combinations of honey and E. hirta, which were A (2:1), B (1:1), C (1:2) and a control with three replications. The treatments were administered to the fish through immersion. Honey was diluted at a 50% concentration in distilled water. Meanwhile, E. hirta was prepared as a coarse powder and boiled at a 3% concentration. The results showed that the combination of honey and E. hirta affected the hematological, histopathological, and morphological parameters of C. gariepinus catfish within the normal ranges. The most effective treatment was found to be treatment C (1:2). Therefore, the combination of honey and E. hirta is potential as a therapeutic option for bacterial infections in fish.

Abstract

Determining the optimum stocking density is a key aspect of intensive catfish farming to maintain fish health and reduce mortality rates. This study aims to evaluate the effect of three stocking densities (20, 30, and 40 fish per bucket) on the hematological profile and mortality of catfish (Clarias sp.) in a bucket-based farming system. The fish were reared for 56 days, and blood samples were taken on days 0, 28, and 56 to measure total white blood cells (WBC), lymphocytes, monocytes, granulocytes, red blood cells (RBC), hemoglobin, hematocrit, and platelet count. Mortality was calculated at the end of the rearing period based on the initial number of fish and the number of live fish. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey HSD test (p < 0.05). Results showed that on day 28, densities of 30 and 40 fish triggered a significant increase in WBC and lymphocytes compared to 20 fish, indicating a stress response and non-specific immune activation at high stocking densities. Chronically, SDM, hemoglobin, and some hematocrit values on days 28 and 56 were consistently lower at densities of 30 and 40 fish, while the lowest platelet count was found at a density of 30 fish. Cumulative mortality increased sharply from around 15% at a density of 20 fish to ±42% and ±56% at densities of 30 and 40 fish. The combination of hematology profiles and mortality showed that a density of 20 fish per bucket was the most physiologically and biologically feasible stocking density under the maintenance conditions used in this study. Abstract

Rote Ndao Regency is one of the regions with the highest seaweed production in East Nusa Tenggara Province (NTT). This potential not only plays an important role in supporting the coastal economy, but also has great opportunities to improve the nutritional status and living standards of the people in the region. Seaweed is known as a highly nutritious food source that is beneficial to health. However, seaweed consumption levels are still low and there is a lack of innovation in seaweed processing. Therefore, this activity aims to increase community knowledge and awareness of the nutritional benefits of macroalgae and to develop innovative macroalgae-based processed products that have economic added value. This activity is divided into three stages. The first stage, preparation, was carried out to identify the problems faced by the community and determine the appropriate solutions. The second stage was the implementation of activities based on the results of the identification, including three main activities, namely counseling on the nutritional value of macroalgae, training on product diversification, and promotional counseling through online media. The entire series of activities ran well and received high enthusiasm from the participants. In addition, there has been an increase in community knowledge and skills in utilizing macroalgae as a source of nutrition and in making cendol and seaweed ice cream. The survey results show that 87.5% of the community is very satisfied with this community service activity. It is hoped that this activity can be a first step in encouraging the use of macroalgae as a source of nutritious food with high economic value.
