Abstract

Determining the cause of death (CoD) is crucial for effective health policy and decision-making, particularly in population health programs. The World Health Organization (WHO) developed the Verbal Autopsy (VA) tool to ascertain CoD through verbal information, particularly in countries lacking comprehensive vital registration systems. In Indonesia, the health landscape is shifting from communicable diseases to non-communicable diseases (NCDs), highlighting the need for updated mortality surveillance. This study aimed to determine the major causes of death among adult mortality in Sleman Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) Indonesia. A demographic surveillance system was employed to monitor vital events, including mortality, with verbal autopsy interviews conducted for each death. A total of 279 adult deaths (ages 15 years and older) from the first two cycles of surveillance were analyzed. Trained enumerators conducted verbal autopsy interviews with informants close to the deceased. The InterVA program was used to process the verbal autopsy data, identifying the CoD for 274 adult deaths. Descriptive analysis was performed to determine the proportion of each cause of death, and Chi-square tests were used to assess differences in proportions. The findings revealed that 68.2% (95% CI: 62.38–73.72) of deaths were due to NCDs, including stroke, heart disease, diabetes, asthma, and chronic liver disease. Infectious diseases accounted for 24.8% (95% CI: 19.82–30.37), while injuries (primarily accidents) contributed to 6.6% (95% CI: 3.94–10.18). Stroke was the leading cause of death, particularly in individuals aged 50–64 years (21.2%, 95% CI: 16.48–26.49), followed by acute respiratory infections, including pneumonia (10.6%, 95% CI: 7.2–14.85). The study concluded that NCDs, particularly stroke, are the leading causes of adult mortality in Sleman HDSS, with significant contributions from acute respiratory infections and injuries. It is recommended for future research to further develop Verbal Autopsy technology, such as AI-based applications that can improve the accuracy of determining the cause of death.

Abstract

Dengue prevention efforts are limited to the control strategies of its vector and the management of breeding sites. New alternatives for dengue vector control that are sustainable and more environmentally friendly are needed to complement the government's current efforts. Research on Wolbachia-infected Aedes aegypti Linnaeus mosquitoes as an alternative biocontrol strategy has been performed in Yogyakarta City. However, one of the concerns of the community members and stakeholders about this technology is the safety aspect regarding the transmission of Wolbachia to other species and the possibility that humans will contract Wolbachia. This study aimed to address these concerns, namely to find out whether horizontal transmission of Wolbachia occurred from A. aegypti that were released to other species and whether residents living in the released areas were infected with Wolbachia. The research was conducted in Dusun Nogotirto and Dusun Kronggahan (Sleman Regency), as well as in Dusun Jomblangan and Dusun Singosaren (Bantul Regency), Yogyakarta Special Province. Wolbachia qPCR screening using the target gene WD0513 was performed on 922 Culex quinquefasciatus Say and 331 Aedes albopictus (Skuse). ELISA test was carried out on 190 pairs of plasma samples, namely the sample before the Wolbachia frequency was established (still <80%) and the sample after it was established (>80%). The results showed no evidence of Wolbachia transfer from Wolbachia-infected A. aegypti to other mosquito species coexisting in the same habitat or to humans. This study corroborates the safety evidence of Wolbachia-infected A. aegypti technology as an alternative to control dengue virus transmission

Abstract

This article will look at the extent to which the Basic Technical Skill (BTS) program has contribut-ed to the spread of admin competence at PT. HAP. By using qualitative research methods. Re-trieval and data collection is done through observation techniques. Observations were made on several employees. The goal is to find out whether the subject has occupied a position that fits the competence or not. Testing is done by selecting subjects who have participated in the Basic Tech-nical Skill (BTS) program. By looking at the change in attitude before joining the program and af-ter participating in the Basic Technical Skill (BTS) program. The results show that basic technical skills have contributed quite effectively to employee competencies, especially for the admin profes-sion, but on the one hand, basic technical skills have not contributed effectively to conflict man-agement in the company.
