Abstract

This article discusses the effect of a cracked clutch shaft on the performance of the gear pump type cargo pump at SPOB Sea World One. Damage was found to the clutch shaft which was indicated by a decrease in the pump flow rate on the ship during bunker service. The aim of this research is to determine the factors that cause clutch shaft cracks, as well as determine the impact of these cracks, and the handling efforts carried out on the clutch shaft. The method used in this research is a qualitative method which produces descriptive data in the form of written explanations. Data collection takes the form of an approach to the research object through direct observation and interviews as well as taking data from the ship. Based on the observations, it was concluded that the impact of the shaft cracking caused noise due to a gap and a drop in pump pressure. And it was found that the factor causing the shaft crack was the lack of implementation of a planned maintenance system on board the ship for the cargo pump, causing the pump to experience over running hours. Turning was carried out as an effort to handle the clutch shaft with an original diameter of 12 cm.

Abstract

English is still used as a foreign language in Indonesia. Withstanding its status as a foreign language, it describes the situation where students are learning English in order to communicate with other English speakers in the world when the students may be tourists or business people. Due this consideration, the English language has not been used on a daily basis in the contrary, but only at a particular place and occasion like at an English class at school or on business meeting at an international company. This research sets to examine and describe the method and activity used by the lecturer in the teaching-learning process. The research conducted in Teknika class at the third semester of Politeknik Maritim Negeri Indonesia (Polimarin) Semarang. In this research, the researcher used qualitative research. In collecting the data, the researcher used observation, specifically as a nonparticipant observer. After conducting the research and analyzing the data collected through observation, the researcher knew the teaching method used by the lecturer was CBI while the learning activities were IBLL and role play. It can be seen that the lecturer focused on the speaking skill in the teaching-learning process

Abstract

Previous studies suggested that game learning method could assist students in improving English proficiency. However, Gen Z students in a semi-military maritime vocational school had a lack of motivation to enrich their maritime English mastery because of their many non-academic activities. The goal of this study was to present polimarlish.id as an alternative game learning medium to enhance maritime English phrases, vocabulary, and idioms through interactive game-learning such as matching pictures, matching sounds, jumbled words, and fill-in-the-blank. This website was developed by considering various types of games and details of the user experience, such as giving clear instructions, attaching real pictures, and using a native sound speaker. Therefore, in order to evolve this game-based learning website, the researcher also gained data by taking observations, conducting interviews, and delivering questionnaires. The data was analyzed using a Likert scale. A total of 85.71% of 28 participants agreed that polimarlish.id could enhance their maritime English standard marine communication phrases (SMCP) proficiency.

Abstract

One method of joining soft metals such as aluminum that is widely used is Friction Stir Welding (FSW). The friction tool is a very important part of FSW. Friction tools are usually made from hardened H13 steel. This research aims to make a friction tool from steel connecting rod bolts used in marine diesel engines. The experimental methods used include FSW tool design, heat treatment of the material at a temperature of 900oC followed by a quenching process with water and salt water cooling media, then continued with material testing (chemical composition test, hardness test, and micrographic test). The test results obtained from the chemical composition test show that the connecting rod bolts include AISI 4145 steel material. The highest hardness value obtained from the connecting rod steel in the saltwater quenching process was 52.67 HRC with a martensite phase, as seen from the micrographic test. Used steel connecting rod bolts from marine diesel engines can be used as FSW friction tool material.

Abstract

Abstract

As an archipelagic country, Indonesia has long been known for its marine potential. This potential comes with new challenges, one of them being language problem. In this regard, English shows its prominent role as the international language to bridge communications. This research provided a needs analysis to identify the “necessities”, “lacks”, and “wants” in relation with English usage in maritime sector, specifically for those conducting internship at international ships. A qualitative approach and a descriptive design were applied in this research. The respondents consisted of 19 students of Polimarin who had completed internship at international ships, selected through total sampling technique. Their responses were collected by a questionnaire, complemented by interview. The collected data were then processed through a model consisting of four stages; data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The “necessities” analysis revealed speaking and vocabulary as the most needed language skill and component. The “lacks” analysis showed that the syllabus used pays attention to English language skills and components evenly and that some respondents were underprepared before doing internship. The “wants” analysis came up with the simple present tense and the simple past tense as the most wanted tenses to master, pronouns as the most wanted grammatical feature and passive voice as the least wanted, all language functions evenly wanted, and group discussion as the most preferred learning activity. In conclusion, syllabus revision is due to improve the quality of English learning by accommodating the students’ “necessities”, “lacks”, and “wants”. Key words:ESP, Maritime English, Needs Analysis

Abstract

The key in language learning and acquisition is exposure towards said language. The most feasible exposure for English learners in the EFL setting is reading due to practicality, continuity, and suitable sources. Their reading success depends on their attitude, motivation, and habit. This research sought to determine the state of learners’ attitude, motivation, and habit toward reading in English. This qualitative exploratory research was initiated in 2020, taking place at the State Islamic University of Raden Intan Lampung (UIN RIL) and the Indonesian State Maritime Polytechnic (Polimarin). The research population included learners registered in those two universities, with 88 (51.8%) from UIN RIL and 82 (48.2%) from Polimarin selected through quota sampling. A 20 items-questionnaire, complemented by some interview sessions, were used to collect the research data. The collected data were then processed through a model consisting of four stages; data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results revealed that the learners showed a generally favourable attitude toward reading in English. This stemmed from good responses shown from all factors of English reading attitude. It should be noted that the previous reading experience factor was the most unfavourable one due to poor start of reading activity. Meanwhile, the learners showed mixed responses regarding their motivation toward reading in English. Two factors, access to materials and English proficiency, were the ones that need further attention, as most learners still lacked in that regard. Ultimately, the learners’ reading habits were still deficient in their native language and even more so in their English reading habits. Keywords: Attitude, Habit, Motivation, Reading, Second Language.
