Abstract

The karst region of Gunungkidul Regency is characterized by highly permeable limestone formations that cause rainwater to rapidly infiltrate into the ground, resulting in limited surface water availability. Pulejajar Cave, located in Jepitu Village, Girisubo District, Gunungkidul Regency, serves as an important groundwater source utilized to irrigate approximately 200 hectares of agricultural land. This study aims to evaluate the hydraulic performance of the Pulejajar Cave water distribution network and determine the optimal pipe dimensions using EPANET 2.2. The data employed in this study include the existing distribution network map, pipe dimensions and characteristics, elevation data, and irrigation water demand of 1.45 L/s/ha. Hydraulic simulations were conducted to analyze flow rate, velocity, pressure, and network optimization requirements. The results indicate that the total water supply from Pulejajar Cave reaches 2,738.98 L/s, while the total irrigation water demand is 1,031.95 L/s, resulting in a surplus of 1,707.03 L/s or 165.41% above the required demand. Despite this substantial water availability, the evaluation of the existing network revealed several pipe sections that did not satisfy the hydraulic criteria for HDPE pipes. In particular, Pipe Puncung 1 exhibited a flow velocity of 9.03 m/s, significantly exceeding the recommended maximum limit of 3.0 m/s. Through pipe dimension optimization, the diameter of Pipe Puncung 1 was increased from 90 mm to 200 mm, successfully reducing the flow velocity to 1.83 m/s, which complies with the recommended design standards. Further optimization of other critical pipe segments also improved hydraulic performance, enhanced distribution efficiency, and minimized the risk of infrastructure deterioration. Therefore, EPANET 2.2 proved to be an effective tool for evaluating and optimizing water distribution networks, supporting the sustainability of irrigation systems in the karst region of Gunungkidul

Abstract

Flood events in Gajah Wong River have caused significant damages such as collapsed riverbanks, damaged neighborhood roads, and forced evacuations. The objective of this study is to visualize the areas along the Gajah Wong River that are affected by flooding during rainfall events, in order to determine the extent of inundated areas under specific return period discharges. This research aims to produce a flood inundation prediction map for the Gajah Wong River as a basis for flood mitigation efforts. The study uses primary data obtained through GNSS surveys, aerial photography, and river depth sampling. Secondary data used include return period discharges for Q2, Q10, and Q25. To calculate the inundated area, the researchers applied photogrammetry methods to generate orthophoto and DEM data, which were then simulated using HEC-RAS software to determine the flood inundation extent. The results of the study show that the flood-affected areas along the Gajah Wong River have inundation extents of 3.208 hectares for Q2, 3.942 hectares for Q10, and 4.601 hectares for Q25.

Abstract

Abstract

River channel realignment is a common river engineering measure to support regional development and flood mitigation; however, it may significantly alter river hydrological characteristics. This study aims to analyze changes in flood hydrographs resulting from the realignment of the New Kaliyasa River in the PLTU Cilacap area using the HEC-HMS hydrological model. Areal rainfall was determined using the Thiessen polygon method based on annual maximum daily rainfall data from nearby rainfall stations. Design rainfall was estimated through frequency analysis using several probability distributions, namely Normal, Log-Normal, Gumbel, and Log Pearson Type III, which were evaluated using the Chi-square and Smirnov–Kolmogorov goodness-of-fit tests. The results indicate that all tested distributions are acceptable; however, the Gumbel distribution was selected as the best-fit distribution due to its smallest maximum deviation value. The selected design rainfall was then transformed into hourly rainfall using the Alternating Block Method (ABM). Hydrological modeling with HEC-HMS was conducted to generate design flood hydrographs for various return periods. The simulation results show variations in peak discharge, time to peak, and runoff volume, reflecting the hydrological response of the Kaliyasa watershed after river channel realignment. This study demonstrates that HEC-HMS is effective in representing flood characteristics and can serve as a technical basis for evaluating river capacity and planning flood control measures in the PLTU Cilacap area.

Abstract

Mount Merak area in Imogiri Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta Special Region, is a highly important historical and cultural site. Its existence is located on a hillside with a terraced topography, making it vulnerable to the impact of hydrometeorological events (such as extreme rain). The aim of this research is to measure and analyze the intensity of rain in the Mount Merak Imogiri area. Provide data-based recommendations for hydrometeorologicaldisaster mitigation strategies, especially related to drainage management and erosion prevention. The methodology used involves frequency analysis of maximum daily rainfall data for 20 years (2004–2023) from the Siluk Rain Post which was processed using MS Excel software. The selection of the best distribution model was based on the Chi-Square and Smirnov- Kolmogorov goodness-of-fit tests, which determined the Log-Normal distribution as the most suitable method. Results of calculating rain intensity using the Mononobe method taking into account the concentration time (Tc) of 4.91 minutes. The analysis results show that the rainfall intensity value for return periods 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 years respectively is 15.71; 19.40; 21.66; 23.73; 24.37; and 26.29 mm/hour. These findings indicate a high risk of surface runoff in a short duration, so it is necessary to design optimal drainage systems and strengthen slopes to maintain the stability of cultural heritage building structures from the threat of local erosion and flooding.
