Abstract

This study aims to identify the influence of smartphone usage duration and frequency on smartphone addiction in early childhood. With the increasing use of technology among children, it is crucial to understand how these factors affect addiction levels. The study employs binary logistic regression to analyze data collected randomly from 100 parents of children aged 4 to 5 years who attend kindergarten in Padang, Indonesia. Smartphone usage duration is measured in hours per day, while frequency of use is measured by the number of uses per day. The analysis results indicate that both the duration and frequency of smartphone use have a significant impact on smartphone addiction. However, based on the odds ratio value, the duration of smartphone use has a more significant influence compared to frequency on addiction levels. These findings provide valuable insights for parents, educators, and policymakers in developing strategies to manage and limit smartphone use in early childhood to prevent addiction risks that could affect their development. This study is expected to serve as a reference for further research and more effective interventions in managing technology use among children.

Abstract

Abstract

South Kalimantan has a unique topography that includes tidal areas and swamps, and peatlands. One of the natural resources that grows well in this area is the galam tree (Melaleuca cajuputi). Traditionally, this plant has been used to treat various inflammatory conditions, such as intestinal inflammation, sore throat, itchy skin, and rheumatism. M. cajuputi contains flavonoid compounds that are believed to have anti-inflammatory properties. This study aimed to determine the anti-inflammatory activity of ethanol extracts and n-hexane fractions of M. cajuputi leaves from South Kalimantan using a protein denaturation inhibition method with IC50 values as the parameter. Sodium diclofenac was used as the positive control in this study. The results of the anti-inflammatory activity test showed that the IC50 values for sodium diclofenac, ethanol extract, and n-hexane fraction of M. cajuputi leaves were 14.948; 51.577; and 61.700 ppm, respectively. Statistical analysis revealed a significant difference between the IC50 value of sodium diclofenac and those of the ethanol extract and n-hexane fraction. Based on the study conducted, it can be concluded that the ethanol extract and n-hexane fraction have anti-inflammatory activity, although their potency is lower than that of sodium diclofenac

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the cooperative learning method with the Numbered Heads Together type on numeracy skills in early childhood. This study used the pre-experimental method with a one group pretest-posttest design. The research sample for children aged 5-6 years was 16 children. Data collection was in the form of a checklist of child development data with value categories from not yet developed to very well developed. Data analysis used the t-test by fulfilling normality and homogeneity first. The results showed that the t-count value is greater than the t-table value (t-count t-table). So, it can be concluded that the cooperative learning method with the Numbered Heads Together type has an influence on the development of early childhood numeracy skills. Thus, the teacher can apply various types of cooperative learning methods in the classroom to improve other aspects of development.

Abstract

The increasing use of smartphones among early childhood populations has raised concerns regarding its impact on children’s development and behavior. Therefore, this study analyzes the dynamics of smartphone addiction among young children in Padang City, Indonesia, using the CSAR (Children–Susceptible–Addicted–Recovered) model. Population data and smartphone usage statistics from 2021 to 2024 were incorporated into the modeling process, while parameter estimation was conducted using a genetic algorithm with six mutation-rate variations. The best estimation result produced an error rate of 3.3646%, indicating a strong agreement between the model and empirical data. The basic reproduction number (R₀) of 0.6156 places the system in the moderate category. This suggests that although the spread of smartphone addiction among young children in Padang City is currently under control and not self-sustaining, continuous monitoring and strengthened preventive measures remain necessary to anticipate potential increases in future cases. Sensitivity analysis reveals that the transmission of addictive behavior through social interaction is the most influential factor affecting changes in R₀. These findings highlight the importance of managing peer-group interactions, such as limiting shared digital activities and strengthening collaborative non-digital play, as effective preventive strategies. Numerical simulations further support these results by demonstrating the system’s tendency toward an addiction-free equilibrium. Overall, this study provides a solid theoretical and empirical foundation for policy formulation and future research on early childhood digital behavior.

Abstract

Smartphone usage is increasing with technological advancements. However, excessive use can lead to addiction, negatively impacting an individual’s physical health, mental well-being, communication skills, and cognitive development. While previous studies have discussed the psychological and social aspects of smartphone addiction, there is still a lack of mathematical models that capture its spread at the population level. To address this gap, this study develops a deterministic compartmental model to describe the dynamics of smartphone addiction, representing real-world addiction scenarios through mathematical analysis. The novelty of this study lies in formulating a theoretical framework that identifies equilibrium points, conducts sensitivity analysis for each parameter, and employs numerical simulations to demonstrate the role of transmission rate and initial conditions in shaping addiction dynamics. The findings highlight that both transmission rate and initial conditions significantly influence the persistence of addiction, underscoring the importance of early interventions to reduce its long-term impact on the population.

Abstract

The formation of numerical concepts is a critical stage in early childhood development. Understandingnumbers lays the groundwork for future mathematical abilities and academic success. This study aimsto investigate the effect of an open-ended learning strategy on the capacity of 4-5-year-old childrento recognize number concepts. To reach the research goal, a quantitative approach was used, alongwith experimental methodologies. The study participants were children aged 4-5 years old, and datawas collected via total sampling. The experimental group was taught using an open-ended learningtechnique, while the control group followed a traditional structured teaching method. Pre-and post-testswere used to examine the children’s ability to recognize number concepts. Statistical analysis, includingt-tests, was used to compare the performance of the experimental and control groups. The results of thisstudy show that using an open-ended learning strategy improves the capacity of 4-5-year-old children torecognize number concepts. In comparison to traditional structured teaching method, the open-endedapproach stimulates active inquiry, independent thinking, and problem-solving, which improves children’scognitive development with regard to numerical concepts. This study suggests that open-ended learningtechniques are excellent educational strategies for developing number concept identification in youngchildren. This study’s findings have ramifications for early childhood educators and curriculum makers. This study stresses the necessity of implementing such tactics in educational settings by demonstratingthe benefits of an open-ended learning strategy in developing number concept awareness. Open-endedlearning techniques can improve children’s mathematics ability while also contributing to their generalcognitive development. Furthermore, these findings may motivate additional study and inquiry into theuse of open-ended learning approaches in various domains of early childhood education, increasing ourunderstanding of successful teaching strategies for young children.
